I just finished up the 2 seasons of Westworld (HBO), a place where adults can vacation, act out safe adventures without consequence, and androids that become more than they first appear to be. This series goes far beyond the premise of the original movie where a computer glitch causes AI to run amuck. This becomes a story of AI acquiring self awareness and self determination. Season One is very immersive as William a visitor and prospective investor in this resort, becomes vested in a particular host (android) and her desires. Season 2 focuses on the breakdown of Westworld with many twists along the way.

If you like AI stories, this is a must see.

I sort of don’t get Westworld. It just doesn’t work for me. I’ve seen the first couple of episodes of season 2 and season 1. Does it get better?

Well a couple of episodes of season 2 won’t do much for you if you’ve not watched all of Season 1 observing what leads to the S1 climax. :)
This is what I think, AI is the kind of subject matter that either grabs you or you may hate it, I know my wife does, in fact she dislikes most SciFi especially the Matrix because that one was hard for her to get it or at least enjoy and embrace the concept. I’ll say if this series does not grab you in the first 3 episodes, it’s not going to get any better. There is a lot of time spent interviewing hosts (to check them for glitches, but later you discover it is more than that) that drops clues about what is going on, but that aspect of the story can feel tedious, at least it did for me. A few too many interviews imo.

As a gage of your AI story tolerance did you like AI (the movie) or Ex Machina? Before sitting down to watch Ex Machina, I had no clue what the story was about, but I found it to be mesmerizing, steadily moving towards a somewhat unexpected, explosive ending. That story perfectly embodies the dangers of where enabled AI can take us without the proper restraints put upon it.

We watched all of season 1. Didn’t rate it. Not saying we won’t watch the rest of season 2 at some point, but people rave about it and I just don’t get it.

Chernobyl is another top TV show from HBO. This one ranks up with the best. The acting is superb. a2

Sure did. Good Si- Fi both.

IMO. Westworld was a bad "B" level Western pretending to be SI-FI.
Strangely, wife enjoyed Westworld, and would not watch AI, or Ex Machina. LOL. a2

Oh, well you said you watched a couple of episodes and I hought you meant a couple in both seasons, so my comment was based on that. :)

Really enjoyed Good Omens (on Amazon Prime, 6 episodes). It started off a little clunky but found its footing very quickly. The main leads, David Tennant and Michael Sheen, were excellent. The style of the show, not the content, really reminded me of A Series of Unfortunate Events (on Netflix with Neil Patrick Harris), which I'd also recommend to anyone who enjoys Good Omens.

You know, I just can’t talk my wife into watching Ex Machina either! I think the name turns her off in addition to not liking AI movies. :)

Now West World is not a typical western, not really a Western at all except for the setting, as you know, but I got wrapped up with William falling for and trying to help Delores escape, and then that got dashed. :p
But I regard this show as highly intelligent and cleaver, exploring A.I. themes, keeping you guessing, and the outside scenery was spectacular. And I really wanted Dolores to be the Rancher’s daughter who was saved.well, she was, but not exactly how I pictured it. ;)

Chernobyl:
ya just a me myself issue, just could NOT watch it.

family in general thought it was very good
one negative (and I did not watch it) maybe some of the Russian characters had a British accent sometimes
[doublepost=1560352733][/doublepost]I am watching a netFlix movie:
"I am Mother 2019"

medium quality
not yet done with it, got interrupted a few times.

It gets worse IMO. About this point I quit, but wife continued to the end, and said it was worth her time, but nothing great. a2

I personally loved both seasons of Westworld. Thought the first was a masterpiece in storytelling, and the second was ambitious yet also excellent.

But I’ve heard from friends that have told me they couldn’t sit through it because it was too convoluted and intentionally misleading (s2 in particular). Understandable. Honestly, I enjoyed making sense of the puzzle. But as long as you like the sci-fi/AI subject matter, I’d say stay patient with it, and if you can, the show benefits immensely from a rewatch.

Chernobyl is an excellent miniseries. I don't want to give anything away but want to touch on one area of the show:
Regarding the nuclear reactor, its purpose and what went wrong, when the scientist took the stand it was an absolute master class on how to breakdown something very complex into a simple set of basic principles for the general public to understand. Anyone who works in a technical field would benefit by watching at least that scene IMO.

Anthony Jeselnik: Fire in the Mayernity Ward. Recommended as really dark, and it sure was. I liked it, my wife thought it was too over the top.

All the characters had British accents. There’s a good podcast with the maker of the show who explains why they didn’t get the actors to use Russian or American accents.

The Misty Mountains
The West (1996)- The finest documentary about the settling of the American West by Europeans, including the American Indian perspective, 8 episode mini-series. I watched this in 96 on PBS, this time viewed on Netflix. Even with historical perspective, it’s impossible for me to view this and not be disturbed by what was done to the Indians, especially the Natives of the South East.
