Apologies for the late reply... I'm re-reading this thread looking for gems...

Noticed that there's an earlier version of this (2011-2018) set in Denmark and Sweden:

"When a body is found on the bridge between Denmark and Sweden, right on the border, Danish inspector Martin Rohde and Swedish Saga Norén have to share jurisdiction and work together to find the killer."
Recycled for another market. My impression, this happens frequently.

The Fall of the House of Usher (2023 Netflix Limited Series)- 2 Episodes in- PASS! Dark, heidonistic, evil drug company family, evil haunts, and blah, blah, blah, blah, just did not grab me. 😐

Getting ready to watch Invasion Season 2, I restarted from the beginning Season 1, very enjoyable, I’m up to Episode 8. I was surprised at all the negative comments in the forum thread below. I guess in some corners, there is an expectation of action up front, instead of devoting an above average amount of time to character group dynamics and relationships, slow on action up front. My comment there:

Special Ops: Lioness (2023, Paramount+)- 2 episodes in, this is good with a hard edge.

Finished this up, thumbs up. The story is a little messy and feels a little unrealistic, but what can you expect these days? ;) A key feature is the main character Zoe Saldana balancing her family life against traveling the world hunting terrorists. I’ll also question taking a marine with zero espionage training and inserting them into a spy craft setting. “I have not been trained for this!” Nicole Kidman looks like she always has her lips pursed in a peculiar way. And then there are people at the top levels (Morgan Freeman) questioning the Operation. Well, just go with the flow. :D The climax is fast and brutal. Show has been renewed for a second season.

I was really interested in the new Shogun series, as the original mini-series was so important that I bought a VCR before the show was released.

Unfortunately, it feels like a bunch of anime producers and fans got together, didn't read the book, didn't watch the mini-series, and just guessed at what would be great. Of course, Mifune Toshiro is dead and his replacement for Toranaga (an actor I like) isn't up to the job.

I had to stop myself from pausing it and I'm only on episode 2.

I keep going back to old TV. I'm beginning to think that Hollywood doesn't know how to tell a story any longer because they're so focused on special effects, nudity, and profanity.

Of the long list of products produced by the entertainment industry for watching on the big screen or home screen, I deem a small percentage as worthy.

Although as a blanket statement, I’m not prepared to say that there is over reliance on CGI, nudity, and profanity, and including those aspects don’t necessarily hinders the ability to tell a good story.

But there is a definite lack of creativity, inability to tell new good stories, and a propensity to recycle stories that have already been hits. The single biggest offender that pops into my head is the Star Wars trilogy, episodes 7-9. With basically an unlimited budget, instead of launching the franchise into new territory, it was decided that recycling this story was a safe money making bet. 😡

For movies based on novels and everyone who read the novel, I think it’s a challenge to tell a story that reinforces or supplements the story for the many who read it.

And how many remakes are necessary, arguably for the most part, none, although there is the rare instance where the remake is better, like Dune. 🙂

Maybe a small percentage but a small percentage of a large number is still too many to watch.

More excellent content is available than there is time to watch.

Hacks. Shogun. White Lotus. Metropolitan Opera. Fargo. The list of good content is way more than there is time to see it.

A Man in Full (2024, Netflix)- Short and sweet, a drama about the head of a Corporation based in Atlanta, who is in conflict with a bank over the $800M he owes them. It’s watching a character study about a character I mostly did not like, but I enjoyed the performances and approve of the ending. :D Note, on RT, this got poor audience and critic reviews. I can’t speak to that, Jeff Daniels, Diane Lane, Tom Pelphrey, Aml Ameen and cast do a great job imho.

Was watching TV last night and saw a promo for ......wait for it...... Matlock.

Yep, they are rebooting it with Kathy Bates. Do we really need a reboot of this when good shows are getting cancelled?

Indeed, Kathy Bates has jumped the shark... not a fan... her last effort, Harry's Law was an abomination that thankfully only lasted 34 episodes... which for me was 33 too many.

Let's let Andy Griffith rest and not try to revive Matlock.

Currently watching: The 8 Show (Korean drama with a similar premise to Squid Game), finishing up Macho Alfa (hilarious Spanish comedy mocking both machismo as well as wokism), Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (anime about an elf mage searching for meaning after the defeat of the Demon King death of old age of her human companions much more interesting than I would have thought)), Demon Slayer - Hashira Training Arc (classic about a boy seeking to turn his sister from a demon back into a human). On queue, Living with Leopards (nature documentary about a leopard family) and Blood of Zeus (well done anime with different take on Greek mythology).

This will keep me busy until I go on holiday as we finish up our semester reporting.

Saw a second promo for "Matlock".

I think they are trying to be cute as Bates is an attorney who just happens to have the same last name as "the guy from that old TV show."

As for Bates, I never used to mind her until I saw Misery. Have hated her, because she did such a good job with that character, ever since. She was just a thoroughly hateable character.

Sugar (Apple TV 2024-) Detective story, missing persons case, a secretive organization, you may scratch your head, huge plot twist near the end, thumbs up.

Whenever I see Jeff Daniel’s, despite his excellent acting skills I still see him dressed as a dog in a dog van 😂🤣😂

He is a good actor though, he was great in The Martian, I will tend to watch something if he’s in it.

I finished watch season three of Clarckson’s Farm, great show and a real eye opener to the struggles of farmers. Started Dark Matter last night but only managed half of the first show, seems alright I’ll give it a bit more time.

In an interview, he said he was warned by his fearful agent, that role could ruin his career…it didn’t. :)

Isn’t that the truth! His career has exploded over recent years. I like his acting. He was just hilarious in Dumb and Dumber.

Re: Sugar. Yes and decidedly no. Traditional in some ways, the plot has some mysterious, strange elements, that are finally made clear. A very big reveal which as I see it, some people will like and some won’t. I liked it. :D

Ooh I may give it a go. Thanks.

I watched the first four episodes and like it. I told my wife about it and now I'm stuck waiting for her to want to start it. Probably going to just go ahead and finish... and re-watch it with her if she ever gets around to it. I hate when she does that. :D

Watching Manhunt on Apple TV (2024), a limited series about the assassination of Lincoln and the hunt for Booth. While historical interesting especially the politics, Southern sympathies, and while the general gist of what happened is accurate, there’s a whole lot of stuff inserted into the show which represents things that may have happened, or suspected but not proven (like an assassination attempt on Jeff Davis), but also involved other people than the characters in the show. It bothers me a bit because you can almost slip into thinking you are watching accurate history.

One example is a search for a decrypter, a shipment of small pox infected clothing, the manifest which is revealed showing the Confederate Secret service highway from New York to Virginia, the path Booth is presumed to be taking. In actuality, reading historical accounts it’s more like common sense, there are only so many ways to cross from Maryland to Virginia, and at some point, they jumped over to the Virginia side and found Booth. His broken leg slowed him down quite a bit.

Another Example:
