Never heard it call that. But I can remember when most shops were shut on a Sunday.

Back in the 80s around here, shops in nearby towns like hardware and lumber providers closed for the rest of the weekend at 3pm on Saturday. Everybody living up here got a half decent weekend back then. You definitely had to plan ahead a little as a part time resident if you had bought a fixer-upper house and planned to work on it just coming up from the city on weekends.

I remember telling a guy at a paint store that I thought it shortsighted to close at 3pm Saturday when they could make a buck off DIY types from the city until at least 6pm. He just looked at me like I was nuts. "We close at 3 so we can get some time off for our own DIY projects..."

Those were the days before Home Depot and Lowe's showed up 15 miles away.

Not sure how it did, as my comment was in response to the a comment that “Time flies,” earlier in this thread, which launched a line of thought that brought me here. Sorry if I somehow misposted, but I felt the topic was timely....
I don’t see an issue. You did mention time acceleration? That’s what I replied to. :)

Liz, many European countries had the same practice in the 80s as well.
Then "rude capitalism" struck and the hunt for profit started 24/7.
I shamelessly admit that I prefer a paint store (or any other for that matter) open after 3pm Saturday. ;)

Yes, I remember that.

Germany, in particular, used to have stores that shut shortly after lunch on a Saturday, a practice that baffled me.

However, - irrespective of religious considerations - psychologically, I think it a good thing to have one day a week that has a somewhat different flavour to it - a time when it is considered acceptable to 'switch off' - and, as a result, personally, I am not in favour of professional practices whereby people are supposed to be available for work 24/7.

Any place but here or there....
I remember when most of Denver pretty much closed down after 8:00 p.m. (late 80s, maybe early 90s). Still a lot of wide open spaces and that. It was a culture shock to see cows sitting on frozen, snow covered grounds on my former friend’s land in Colorado Springs (or the Spigs as then defined by their airport abbreviation :D). Yes, NY me asking “Aren’t they cold? Why are they just sitting there?!?” :p:rolleyes::p

Going back in the early aughts after they expanded the airport was a shock as there was very little wide open space left. Not sure if the business hours changed, but wouldn’t be surprised if so.

Most places where I grew up were closed one day a week, but I forget if that included the Chinese and pizza restaurants I almost lived at as a teen.

Motion sensor lights shut off in the room where I work, leaving me in the dark. Makes me think ‘Ooh Thursday morning already?!?’ (Done for the week:cool:)...

What was that about our perception of lights, dark and time?!?:D

So since we're discussing popcorn, I have to ask something. For as long as I remember, I've always eaten my popcorn with sugar, instead of salt. Every single one of my friends thinks I'm an utter and total freak show, but I stand by it. Much better with sugar.

Am I the only one?

Possibly.

For popcorn, salt is absolutely necessary. Salt and sugar, perhaps, this might merit further exploration, but sugar without salt, hmmmmm....

Now, salt and sugar, this I could give some consideration to: Some of my favourite foods are those that hit that sweet and salty nexus, one which - to my palate - is a sort of gustatory nirvana; butterscotch, shortbread biscuits, salted caramel, Parma ham, corn with butter and salt, and yes, popcorn......

No I like both sweet popcorn, which at the cinema is a kind of candy caramel coating with different flavours or salted popcorn and if available real butter.

Well, I'm one of those who likes my actual corn (on the cob) sprinkled generously with salt and positively dribbling butter.

I eat corn on the cob like a Neanderthal. I put a ginormous pile of butter on the plate and sprinkle it with salt and pepper. Then with a knife I slice off a gob (like way more than I should) and put it on one end of the ear and quickly gnaw down the length of the ear in one breath allowing it all to mix in my mouth. :(:(

I’m not proud of this, but it’s the way the big boy farmers ate it. :(

Please don’t quote this because I want to delete it soon.

WT*? Tell me you don’t put sugar on your sweet corn? No self respecting
Heartlander could ever do such a thing. No more corn for you!

It was delivered a minute after posting it. Lol.

A Canon MF247dw. It was up and running within 5 minutes of delivery. Pretty slick. I think it’ll fit my needs...which aren’t great. I got my recipe printed. I guess I can return it now. :)
Would have pointed you towards a Brother, brother.

Past posts have led me to believe Sceptical hails from the British Isles. Must be some alcohol induced ritual going back a few centuries.

I saw a Brothers I liked but it was $100 more. I’m pretty happy with this one so far. Pretty much anything is an improvement over the inkjet.

Fair enough. I think the cheapest Brother with duplexing, wifi, and whatnot is around $220 excluding tax. I really like Brother because they're simple to fix, easy to use, and none of that smartchip ********.

I honestly set out to buy a Brothers but got sidetracked and excited and stuff and before I knew it I bought the canon. I’m a real low volume user who just got sick of buying ink. I didn’t realize how affordable lasers had become. I hope this is reliable.
