Any place but here or there....
@Matz: Cannot abide cold offices. You will never, ever, see me in short sleeves in an office, usually, I'm the one in long sleeves, and am also usually attired in a proper, formal, woollen jacket, even when most of the others are in short sleeves.

@kazmac: Unfortunately, it may require a visit in person to sort out your mum's issues. Even with the best will in the world, medical professionals will sometimes get things wrong, and - despite repeated entries and instructions by phone, may still continue to get it wrong until you put in an appearance, in person.

Eldest sister was there in person and said this several times (she is quitting on helping mom at the moment). I cannot step foot back into the hospital given my own fragile system. So why they are not understanding that when all of us -including mom- are very clear on what is going on, is dumbfounding.

Thank you though.

Well, my post was informed by my own experience - when my mother returned from respite care (to give the carer a break) in the hospice in 2017 with bed sores, which shocked us - and, subsequently, we have made a point of insisting, in person and on the phone, that she requires an air mattress (among other things).

But, I get that it is not an easy situation, especially when you have your own trials and tribulations, and siblings can be less than helpful or supportive, or offer limited and reluctant and grudging support.

It just boggles my mind. Like eldest sister, the nurses want to do the easiest thing possible and then lie up the wazoo when pressed about it.

As for the doctor who is the director of the rehab unit (and my primary care physician now), I am...disappointed he’s not understanding. Granted, he’s a general practitioner but we’ve asked for other doctors etc.

I am sorry your mom had to go through those things and thank you very much for sharing. I know we will get an answer, I will just try to be positive.

Potentially having to go to another branch of the grocery store who are delivering an order here this morning because the delivery did not have two vital things I needed. I do not know about stock levels until the morning of delivery so it's frustrating.

Hrm.

How little I like the feeling of non-slip shower mats.

How peculiar it sounds to describe something by adding one level of abstraction. E.g. "I'm a huge fan of automobile cars!" vs. "I'm a huge fan of cars!" or "I'm getting really into rap songs!" vs. "I'm getting really into rap!" or "I'm pretty good with computer machines," vs. "I'm pretty good with computers."

Wow, that's really cool. I never knew the term "back masking" before despite one of my favorite songs, They Might Be Giants' Wearing a Raincoat, using it extensively. The old OS X installation song, Honeycut's Exodus Honey, used it a lot as well.

Better than the (seriously unsettling) feeling of slipping in the shower.

In these scenarios, I run a cost benefit analysis.

I would phrase it as follows: I am rather partial to motor-cars.

So do I. I don't like those mats either, but won't risk ill consequence of not using one. Someplace where there's no mat, I'll even put a towel in the tub and let the shower wet it down thoroughly before I'll set foot in there.

I think that extra level of "abstraction" is all down to modern prevalence of narcissism. It's not about cars, songs, or computers, it's about me.

I will be that again too, once my mechanic gets the snow tires on and finishes the rest of the winterizing checklist. It's getting on to that time here: 41ºF this morning and only 55 in the kitchen when I set about coffee-making. My furnace did kick in yesterday in mid-evening. That was some serious "summer's over" signal, as if the gas provider's having topped off the tanks earlier in the week wasn't enough of a message.

Sometimes it really is such an immensely grace of luck of NOT getting what we thought we wanted.
Instead it was a profound liberation that was gifted.

Edit. I want something much much better know :D

Anywhere nice?

That depends on whether you consider the Balkans "nice". I am travelling there to observe an election.

But, when you consider some of the places where I have worked, yes, it could be considered "somewhere nice"; it is still in Europe, the war has been over for more than twenty years, and the coffee is superlative.

As it’s a bit safer than your last deployment, perhaps your camera could make its way into your bag.
