I'm in a boat on a river. The trees and sky have an unusual orange-like shade and texture, almost jam-like. I hear a voice, but I don't respond right away. It's a girl with strange eyes, attractive and engaging, but with a rotationally symmetric crystalline aspect. She says I should call her Lucy, and she's obviously wearing a disguise.

There are tall green and yellow flowers with an almost plastic sheen, so tall they're over my head. The girl wanders off, and I follow her to a bridge near a fountain. The playground has rocking-horses, and smiling people are eating marshmallow pies.

A very flimsy, almost paperlike, taxi takes me to a train station, where the railroad porters have mirrored neckties. The girl with the strange eyes, who I'd lost track of earlier, suddenly appears at the turnstile. And we're gone.

I love girls with kaleidoscope eyes!

Whenever somebody mentions Apple updating the iPhone SE or releasing a new 4" phone, there's always somebody who posts (even vaguely) disparaging comments about how it'll never happen, how only chicks and small dudes need small phones, or how you'd need to be a midget to use a 4" phone (despite iPhones being that size if not smaller for nearly a decade—did we all have growth spurts?).

I can't help but wonder if it's a product of being really happy with one's plus-sized phone and worrying that the odd minority of SE fans might get their way. By odd minority of SE fans, I mean those who insist that Apple needs to go back to exclusively selling smaller phones.

I’ve been happy with my plus size phone since they released it, but I have no problem with Apple releasing smaller phones if people want them. But though I was very happy with my iPhones when they were smaller, I’d never go back.

I am happy with the size of my iPhone XS -- although I had the Plus-sized iPhones for a few years and liked the better readability of the larger screen the physical phone always felt a little too large and awkward in my hands, and didn't fit well into pockets or some of my purses. When the iPhone X was available on display last year and I picked one up and held it, I thought, "ah, the perfect size for me!" and of course it also has the larger screen for easier reading. I would not want to go back to the smaller sized iPhones, nor would I want to go any larger now. I'm very pleased with the size of the X and XS.

But while both of you had liked the smaller phones, and now prefer the larger ones currently available, mercifully, neither of you feel the need to mock or deride those who prefer the smaller form factor.

What's on my mind on this heatwave (+20ºF) of a day is the predictable news from good ol' wet-blanket rodent Mr. Punxsutawney Phil, who apparently was rousted from his winter hibernation today by his handlers and held up at dawn to see if he cast a shadow.

Well hell yeah he did, whole day probably looked grim to him, poor ol' thing... and so here's to six more weeks of winter... Happy Groundhog Day!

This seems fleetingly familiar. Like shells rolling in the waves lapping on a beach, or some half-remembered echo of a film seen many times.

I’d love a smaller iPhone that doesn’t have Face ID. Though I am truly missing the headphone jack (not going Bluetooth, I do not need or want something else to charge).

Shrugs.

Now that I’ve begun using my Surface Laptop 2, I really like it. The fear of change is starting to slip away. :)

Yes, I'm rather partial to the headphone jack as well.

I think it is unfortunate that Apple has now taken away the headphone jack on the iPad Pros, too. Sometimes I'll be in the bedroom at night on my iPad and will want to listen to some music or watch and hear a new video. Since I am in a condominium apartment unit, I need to consider the people above me, who probably prefer not to listen to my music or video choices after midnight or so! Rather than get out of bed and grab the MacBook I would probably have to just wait until the next day to view the video and listen to the music. I don't miss the headphone jack much on my iPhone but know I definitely would on the iPad. Right now I'm still using the last generation of iPad Pros and will do so for a while longer so it hasn't become an issue yet.

Last year when Face ID made its debut on the iPhone X I was a bit leery of it but once I finally set it up I find that I much, much prefer it to Touch ID. The latter never worked well for me at all and I always wound up having to type in the passcode anyway. With Face ID about the only time I need to do it again is after an IOS software update.

So agree with this, it has been my experience with my XR. With my SE I had to keep re-entering fingerprints, they'd match up for a few days and then my hands would get chapped or pruny from handwashing fabrics for sewing projects, and I became an alien! Eventually tired of that gig and just resorted to passcode use.

So, I love picking up the XR and having it unlock when I look at it. Even if I wonder how it can recognize me sometimes... I know it's not just cosmetic LOL because the other day when I picked it up I had flour on my face, a wild look in my eyes and some drops of a cookie batter on my eyeglasses, from a kitchen experiment gone slightly awry. Still the XR graciously ignored all that and let me have another look at that darn recipe.

On my mind today: heat wave has us at 41ºF and isi doing a snow removal job out there, my car almost looks like a car again instead of giant white turtle. Another day of this and I'll be able to blast my way out the crunchy stuff at end of my driveway and go get some fresh produce.

I have my iPhone on a stand on my computer workstation when I am on the computer at home, and when a new email comes in or the phone rings, all I have to do is glance at it and know if the message coming in or the phone call is likely to be important..... So much easier than having to pick up the phone and stick my finger on it!

LOL the baking recognition scenario.

Face recognition: I’ve started using Windows Hello, which is nice for log ins, but still creeps me out a bit. If the Surface Laptop had fingerprint readers I’d definitely do that.

My resistance to Face ID is simple: as someone who was hit with identity theft, and now phishers trying to desperately get my Apple information, I’d rather not go the full blown Face ID route. I do not want that on my phone (and my phone is my least used device when I am home). I do not need a state-of-the- art phone.

On a more important note, glad you’re okay.

Missus Z doesn't bother with dongles and earphones. Mostly because I'm a heavy sleeper and nothing wakes me up except the chirping of birds. Damn those birds. In the summer is takes every bit of strength not to load up a shotgun with non lethal shot and shoot at a tree or two.

We have very, very, thick and heavy windows. Thick walls with lots of high end insulation. But that chirping is so high pitched it pierces through all those boundaries around me.

The worst are the morning doves who decide to do their mating calls and it sounds like a badly working electric motor whirring like a drunk man on the street slopping from side to side in an attempt to walk and blend in.

Bastards.

I’m not following the changes. Sorry. Why can’t you use EarPods in your bedroom at night?

Earpods don't fit everyone's ears. The Shures work great on the new iPhones, though. I mean, price placed aside, they offer a solid snug fit and very good noise isolation.

Also, in my opinion, people look like dinguses in public wearing the Earpods.

I think mention was made of not wanting yet another set of gizmos that need charging, which I can sure ID with. Not speaking for anyone else.

My other issue with earpods is about losing them. I'd preferentially use an external BT speaker over those as long as I didn't have to concern myself about bothering someone else with the audio output.

Often still just use wired earbuds and will increasingly miss simplicity of that since it worked across all my devices, now it's about does one have right cable or dongle..

First world problems,,,, but that's the world I am fortunate enough to live in so I feel free to carp sometimes.

I believe you’re thinking of AirPods. EarPods are wired.

Those are awful, too. The old, old, old Earpods/buds had a rubber compound ring that allowed some fit. Apple got rid of those years ago and it's smooth plastic now. In the case of AirPods, the Shure models are good, too, but not nearly half a grand amazing.
