Well, my turn with the flu after three weeks non-stop. Taking a wordpress course and then making up my work (preparing for the new semester) including working on Saturdays - including this past Saturday although it was rather pleasant taking our class on a tour of the Old Town of Geneva with an excellent and very amusing guide. She has to be pushing 70 yet walks at a very fast pace and knows a great deal about history, the Calvinist reformation and even tidbits like where the term "bankrupt" comes from. It comes from when Italian bankers would trade on wooden benches (banca in Italian) and when the banker was insolvent the bench would be broken (not sure if it was literal or just a figure of speech).

Anyway after sleeping for ten hours feel a bit better - the nasty cough has calmed down.

That is fascinating (irrespective of whether true or not) about the possible origins of the word "bankrupt".

After 13 months of waiting, today I received in the mail official correspondence from Headquarters US Marine Corps officially recognizing my service in Korea and awarding me the Korea Defense Service Medal.

I had to do a bunch of paperwork and had to contact my former platoon commander, who is still on active duty and a Lieutenant Colonel now, to write a letter verifying my service. Unfortunately, they didn't keep good (or any) records of my unit being in Korea multiple times back in the day. But with his help, they finally awarded me the medal.

Congratulations. Now you can wear it with pride with Klinger and Hawkeye!

Do you have any other medals?

Went to the shops. Took one look at the lines and no thank you'd out of there. Not waiting an hour plus in line to buy a few bottles of sauce. Counted roughly 130ish people waiting to be rung up.

Right now...pizza is on my mind...

Tempted to go that route today but it's 15 miles RT and we had forecasts of intermittent freezing rain, even though temps were nearly 40 earlier. Decided to skip it and make 2 fake pizzas from a couple of uncut pitas, tomato paste, assorted leftover stir fried peppers, onions and cauliflower with some grated romano mixed into the tomato paste and a little mozzarella atop the whole thing.... under the broiler for a bit et voila.

I felt famished by time I constructed them, so couldn't tell you if they came out great or not, anyway one vanished in a matter of minutes and the other's wrapped and stashed in fridge for tomorrow. Probably not going to make it past breakfast knowing me.

Yah i let my fingers do the walking today on some cupboard item re-ups, and we'll see whether Amazon Pantry will be able to deliver on Friday after the ice-glazing warnings for early morning are over. Every time I think to ditch their annoying pantry program it turns up useful one more time, usually in winter.

Pantry comes in useful at times. Perfect for cold weather or when you've got a cold!

In other news, seems anytime I update a set up apps and then reset them to how I like and save my config files yet again, the companies behind the apps release an update the very next day. It happened today as I read my emails this morning at work. I'd spent from 11 PM to 3 AM fixing those apps. Screw it. I'll wait six months like the last time.

Ugh, that reminds me that I had bought a major upgrade of EazyDraw way back when I was running some older Mac OS on a laptop, then got a newer laptop and never installed the new EazyDraw under El Capitan... for all I know I need yet another upgrade now w/ Mojave. With luck it's a freebie. The big upgrade was not particularly cheap.

I limp along using that one older laptop offline, mostly because the older EazyDraw still works on it and I need some of the stuff I did on it in my sewing studio -- like cribsheets for cutting fabrics for efficient mass production of certain block designs.

Coincidentally, one was for macOS. It's not a huge update but it fixes a lot of bugs the last version had and introduces a new list of features. I'm more annoyed because the developers haven't fixed the issue of each new upgrade wiping custom settings. No custom settings export either.

The other suits are Dutch or German made software and I can go months without upgrading until the addons I use require a new software base version. I can export settings on those but it takes forever with monstrous file sizes. And you're usually better off uninstalling then reinstalled to avoid any issues down the line. Even with a large set of SSDs it takes forever.

Good conduct medal? Don’t think I’d qualify!
You know, the funny thing is, in order to earn that one, a Marine needs to have not gotten into trouble for 3 straight years. No court-martial's or NJP's (non-judicial punishment). In one perspective, it's kind of sad that they have to give you a medal for not being bad. Which implies that a lot of Marines get into trouble - which is actually kind of true.....

Congratulations and thank you for serving. :)
Thank you!

What’s on my mind?

Just sent in my salary requirements for another private firm job.

Got my mom a replacement flip phone (she doesn’t want anything more robust) and a $10 discount on her monthly bill last night.

Paying down my hospital bill and Surface Laptop. Soon, I will be back to the usual bills with no credit card balance.

Looking forward to seeing my former supervisor tomorrow morning. I miss her so much and feel sad she has to replace the person under her (my former junior supervisor who was ultimately let go because of cancer).

Not sure what food I will bring to the former supe.

Do I go to a Danish bakery and risk trying something new? Ditto Dominique Amsel Bakery (No desire to try Cronuts so I’d skip that location)? Or just get a host of yummy stuff from Korean-French chain Paris Baguette (their Chocolate coconut milk chia pudding is a 4-5 day a week purchase for me. It’s not sweet and so satisfying. I am staring at today’s portion as I type.)

I like this kind of decision.

Your mum sounds like Mrs AFB! She uses my old slider phone from back in the day! She likes that it isn’t desirable for a thief.

Chocolate coconut milk chia pudding sounds horrific! Not keen on coconut since an unfortunate incident in my teens with a bottle of Malibu.

3 years? I’d be lucky to last 3 hours!

Mom’s needs are simple.

You cannot taste the coconut milk as they use a crazy amount of chocolate and maple syrup to flavor it. Just means more for me then.

What a coincidence that you mention chia pudding. I just watched this video last week on a dark chocolate chia parfait.

Thanks.

Texture-wise, Chia pudding can be hit or miss, but my current addiction looks like melted Nestle’s Crunch bars and just tastes like mostly unsweetened dark chocolate. Not sure former supe will like because she complained about the chia pudding I bought from Pret one time. It was pretty funny in that her food complaints can be hilarious in how she goes on about it.

She said she’ll eat anything but artichokes, so I am wondering if I should try the Danish place since she liked the Skyr in Iceland.
