Another scam attempt.
Chloe has written to me, and to several others including 'teddybear', that $399 will be taken out of my Paypal account and to call this number if there are any problems with this.
Good luck with that Chloe, I keep my Paypal balance at $0, just to avoid this sort of thing.
However, the email has an attached PDF file, which have been known to infect you just by opening them.
I am going to have to set up a virtual machine, access the email, delete it, then make sure the email trash is truly emptied.

I had a work email from Jeff Bezos the other day. He was looking to give me several thousand dollars. I’d been randomly selected apparently! I just marked it as junk and deleted it.

If it makes you feel any better, the claim that they were taking the money from your PayPal account was just another lie to frighten you into contact them. You don’t have to keep a 0 balance just because of these scammers scare tactics.

Although there are plenty of other good reasons to keep a 0 PayPal balance, just based on it being PayPal

I get at least a call a week from scammers claiming to be from Amazon about “a charge for a new iPhone”. Instead of hanging up, I now ask them to double check since I really ordered “spleens from young healthy children and can they double check that they are really from healthy children this time” and that “the last order was full of worms and obviously came from untouchables”. It’s rewarding to hear them swear at me in Hindi and then hang up.

There is this odd thing regarding scammers...

We get told by the banks (and others) not to give our details to unknown people on the phone. Fair enough.

Then, the bank rings me (and I know from other things at the beginning of the call that it was genuine), from an Unknown Number, and before they will talk to me, ask me for my personal details.

So the bank behaves in a way that they tell me to beware of. If you want to talk to me about my bank account you need to prove to me who you are. I know who I am, but I don't know who you are.
I said this to the bloke on the other end of the phone, and he was quite confused.

Anyway, I rang the bank on their publicly available phone number, confirmed what it was all about and fixed the matter.

I also get a message from "Doctor", telling me to go to "http://Dodgy.com" and retrieve a message.
Again, I independently confirmed that it was a genuine message. But really?

Excellent post.

Fortunately, when my GP phones, their actual phone number appears on my phone, (along with its identifying name), and I know it to be genuine.

Re banks, I suspect that there may well be something of a double standard in place.

traffic jams......I had to make an unexpected trip this past week. I returned yesterday evening just in time to find myself sitting in stopped traffic on the highway for a painful amount of time. It turned out that there had been an accident on the off-ramp, the one I would use except it was now closed while the cars involved were removed.

Sounds like the last couple of days of my life.
Sat Nav tells me to come off (along with everyone else). But as I’m sat on the slip road I can see the motorway is clear now. Took a chance and rejoined the motorway.
Total extra time on journey was 30 minutes. Still think I made the right call.

I'm sure some of you will be happy to know that I got my speaker back from the shop, and it's all repaired and everything! It was all covered under warranty, which is even better. I'm just never laying it on its side again!
Good to hear. A free repair is always nice.

Just finished work for the evening so that’s very much on my mind. Busy day in the office tomorrow. Monthly meetings and catching up on work from today. So sadly an early start.

Delighted to hear this; very good news that it was still under warranty.

Well wear.

Bins, and laundry.

And I also have been ordering meats (of the kind I must order in advance, such as shin of beef on the bone), and smoked fish to ensure that I will be well stocked not just over the actual Christmas but for the weeks immediately following from the Yuletide season, as the farmers' market will be very limited for a number of weeks, as several of the stalls shall disappear for a few weeks, by taking a winter break.

The organic German stall (the best in the farmers' market - though they have little produce remaining at this time of year) plan to turn up this coming Saturday - I had thought that last Saturday was their last day - and thus, I have asked that they put aside some of their (superb) organic, free range eggs for me.

Aww, laundry...

I really hate having to do it, but I need clean clothes.

I feel you, not sure where you live on campus in residence because that was annoying to go down with a basket and especially when it was busy.
At least, living on campus, there were arrangements - or places - where you could do laundry, have laundry done, and the service came with, comprised your campus experience (and was part of what you had paid for, or received as part of a scholarship) while you lived on campus.

Baskets in the rain, okay.

My freshman year there was a local laundry that did fluff and fold. Charged by the pound and only cost about twice what the machines cost. So well worth it.

Also there was a sports bar/laundymat not too far from campus. Cool concept, but the F&F was better.

Actually, when I lived in a compound, while working in Afghanistan, and in Somalia (with the EU), we had similar laundry arrangements to when I lived on a university campus.

A diplomatic colleague (who had once, much earlier in his life, studied for the priesthood) once remarked to me that our compound (which was not entirely unlike a weird campus) reminded him of a cross between "a monastery, and one of those slightly seedy one or two star hotels that you used to find in eastern Europe and the Soviet world, and an open prison, though the sort designed to Keep Them Out, rather than Keep Us In."

I remember thinking that that sounded about right.

'Tis the week before winter travels and I haven't gotten my family anything for Christmas/WinterSolstice. Why? Because my miserable kin refuse to stoop so low as to actually communicate to me what they would like, but will judge me mercilessly for what I buy them. Added bonus this year - I am travelling to see them, so the gifts have to be small to fit in my backpack.

As someone who doesn’t celebrate Christmas I live NOT having to do Christmas shopping or having to choose gifts for people. Or worse having to tell people what I wanted.
Much easier to just skip Christmas, birthdays and Easter etc.
