Any place but here or there....
I started thinking about lots of food today as soon as @Scepticalscribe mentioned she was thinking about a late lunch. Of course on this side of the pond it was more like midmorning but damn if I didn't figure an early lunch sounded like a far better idea to me. I am incorrigible.
:p

I thought for sure I’d start with my freeze dried strawberries and fresh blueberries in almond milk. Nope, mom made her awesome lettuce and tomato sandwiches. Yum.

And now I am thinking, that was great, but what’s next?

So what was your early lunch?

A less creative version of @Zenithal's egg salad sandwich that had got mentioned yesterday in another thread. Mine was still very satisfying though, made as two open faced sandwiches on fairly small pieces of country bread, toasted.

I did manage to wait until noon to start preparing it, realizing that a lunch before noon after a reasonably late weekend-ish breakfast at 7am was going to be over the top and also leave me thinking it was suppertime at 5pm... slippery slope there towards a mid-evening snack which I prefer to avoid.

Usually around this time of year up until summer I prefer a slightly warm potato salad. Omitting the mayonnaise for flavored olive oil, fresh lemon and lime juice with zest, splash of vinegar (your choice of variety), green onion, cilantro, dash of spicy curry powder, etc.

I cannot stand any sweetness in the majority of salad types. Savory and spicy for me.

Waiting at the airport for my flight. Why do we have to get here so early?
My boss is notorious for turning up at the last minute.
But as a less frequent flyer who lives further from the airport, I like to include just in case time for peace of mind.

Anyway had a tea. Bought a drink for the flight, now I’m just waiting for the gate announcement before I have another trip to the loo.

Also comparing my carry on to others. Apparently RyanAir can be quite stroppy.

Hmm thinking we need a "What was for breakfast/lunch thread" reading a few posts. I had some nice oatmeal I mixed with dried organic apples from the dacha of a friend which is located outside Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) and with a bit of cassonade is a great late breakfast treat. Also thinking how glad I am the forecast was wrong as we have some sun and mild temps. Contemplating the shape of the year as it seems to be heading in several possible directions.

I like almost all potato salads if they are properly made.

And, in summer, I like a mixed salad of tomato and cucumber, with diced fresh apricot, or sometimes mango, and diced orange, along with green onion. The contrasting colours, flavours and textures - and the tartness of the citrus fruit and cheery tomatoes - make this a tasty salad.

Ryanair can be quite stroppy and have a reputation (which they are attempting to address and possibly remedy, just a little) for enforcing the small print of petty rules concerning luggage.

Glad you are hydrated and comfortable. I share your view that it is better to arrive early, far too early, if necessary, than to be stressed and arrive at the last minute.

Dried organic apples from Bishkek? Wow. I'm impressed and envious, both. Do enjoy them.

Lucky you - I have spent some time in Bishkek (and others parts of Kyrgyzstan) and found the food surprisingly good, and, at times, excellent.

If you are ever there when the pomegranates are in season, I recommend that you try some freshly squeezed pomegranate juice; although I have had freshly squeezed pomegranate juice from Turkey to other parts of central Asia, a particular memory is of walking through Bishkek market, with some colleagues, all of us sipping glasses of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice.

I like savory and spicy salads too although I'll sometimes put a tad of bread and butter pickle relish into tuna salad meant for sandwiches. For salmon salad I like a little mustard and dill relish in the mix...

When are my friends arriving in Barcelona. That’s what’s on my mind.

Also beer at lunch makes me sleepy!

I'd suggest that you still ask the hotel for a map - they'll have a very easy to decipher one, and you can mark bars and restaurants on it in terms of where they lie re the hotel.

Understand fully about beer at lunch; I'm the same.

While I'll happily imbibe a beer at lunch, I also find that it makes me sleepy, and thus, as a rule, I rarely partake of one at that time.

Business trip or vacation? I was really impressed with Barcelona. Having seen many a Cathedral, La Sagrada Família Basilica is a one of a kind treat if you are into architecture. The city besides being pretty, has a lot of iconic architecture.

Pleasure! Despite a work colleague asking if I could drop something off with our Spanish sales rep! Taken a few photos on my walk. Lots of old buildings. Interesting place.

Very wise. Heading back to hotel now. I’ve walked a long way. Then perhaps a nap!

Yes, if I have beer at lunch then I'm no good for the rest of the day and don't get much accomplished. Ditto for even one glass of wine. I very, very seldom indulge earlier in the day than 4:00 or so, and even at that if I have something important to do I wait until that's done before reaching for liquid refreshment.

Barcelona sounds like a fascinating and beautiful city!

I'm in a similar position; a single small beer, or glass of wine are all I would ever take at lunch, and then, usually only if I have already done all (or most) of what needed to be done by that time.

I used to work with colleagues who did 2-3 pints at lunch. I’d have been fit for nothing!

That was the way things were in those days; the term "liquid lunch" was not a misnomer.

I knew chaps who would take afternoon naps, (leaving their secretaries to handle whatever came in), and I also knew Army officers (who would be close to retirement now, or coming up to it, or recently retired, guys who would have been commissioned in the early or mid 60s and early 70s) who used to indulge in the Mess (always generously provisioned) at lunch time, and then actually return to work, a work that may have involved training on weapons, or running courses, or handling stuff that requires a cool head and clear mind.

I worked in a slaughterhouse after dropping out of college and before enlisting.

We’d drink a 40 ouncer at the first 15 minute break, two 40’s during the half hour lunch, and another 40 at the last 15 minute break. That was a hellova place. It hardened me for combat and working the projects. Haha.

What's on my mind is that I have a friend who likes the TV series Victoria... and she has been on my case to hurry up and watch the downloads I've squirreled away of Season 3, so that we can talk about the episodes without her feeling she's spoiling anything I may not have viewed yet.

Right so I promised to attempt a a binge-watch over weekend.

Right so it's 10:30pm Sunday and I haven't seen even one show.

So... "Liar liar pants on fire" is what's on my mind.

I think I'll just tell her it's late in the day to imagine anything about Queen Victoria can possibly be a spoiler at this point, so I'm willing to listen to her try to spoil it for me anyway next time we talk on the phone.

Dealing with the bureaucracy of death.

Right. There's a form, for everything, at least here. Stuff the average dullard wouldn't even be dull enough to imagine anyone would ever need to invent. Where does the world find these people to create these forms? (begging the question of having invented the need to create them to begin with).

I was executrix of a relative's estate and remember once looking at some form that was required to redeem around $18 owed the estate by the electric power co-operative. Think I was rummaging in my brain trying to divide 4 pages into 18 bucks --less a steep discount applied in advance by me in consideration of my forms phobia... and alas, I also remember the estate's attorney saying "oh there's likely a small power company co-op rebate needs to be got in hand, but you can handle that, just ask them to mail you the little form."

Honestly on some days it was a cure for the grief that lingers when someone you love departs the planet. I suppose it was good to exercise some of those other emotions and the jumble of reactions one has to them: a good belly laugh, exasperation, procrastination, a walk out back to see if there was possibly something --anything-- else far more pressing to be done before lunch...

So I empathize. Don't skip the opportunities for belly laughs... :)

My dad was a boner for most of his life. So my school holidays were spent in such places.
As he was paid piece work, I’d do the fetching and carrying. He’d earn double those nights!

Yes interesting places!

My aching body after doing a lot of walking in Barcelona today. Most enjoyable in the sun. 23 at one point.

The bureaucracy seems endless, but, it is part of life (and death).

More unsettling is how the timetable of the day - which was dictated by my mother's needs - and which had dominated my life for the previous eight years as I had the responsibility for organising and ordering her life - changed so dramatically and profoundly when she passed away.

Think the combat and working the projects had something to do with making a place in you for the poetry and tender loving care of those little dogs that have popped up in the afternoon of your tour of the planet... the 40 ouncers may have been a marinade but something from earlier on in your experience of humanity was the tenderizer.

That I can totally relate to. As we past by the street sellers earlier I had to keep reminding myself I didn’t need to bring back any gifts for Miss AFB as she is no longer part of our lives.
