Well goodness, looks like I've caught another cold, I am not feeling well today. Sucks it has to happen at the worst time possible.
Given your recent posts, I suspect that this may have come about as a result of some serious stress.

As @Apple fanboy has already suggested, I would (strongly) recommend plenty of fluids (not just water, but also stuff such as hot tea), Vitamin C, and bed rest.

In town to collect my second pair of glasses.

Beautiful sunny morning. Already been on a 4 mile walk with Mrs AFB. Saw one deer. No squirrels or rabbits though sadly.

Mac mini is 9 hours away from restore. This is better than I’d managed on my last few attempts, so really hoping it gets there this time.

I need a faster external drive is on my mind though!

Happy Sunday all.

I'm having some nice VietNamese coffee right now. Was in bed most of Saturday. Looking forward to feeling alive again. Got some anchovy, cashew, and almond snacks (from Japan) but at a local store. They remind me how much I want to return to Japan, however, everywhere is the best if you work at it!

Having some Thai coffee myself and yearning to return there and Japan later this year. I would spend 6 months in all of south east Asia if I could.

Amen to that.

I would happily spend years in South East Asia if I could.

Happy Sunday all.

I find a 500Gb SSD generally good enough to store OS, normal user files and applications (anything else gets stored on a normal spinning platter HDD).
Alternatively, I get good results from a Fusion drive, although there is some command-line work involved.

You’re probably right.

Tried to practice this evening and had almost no strength in my left hand, to the point where I could hardly play a major scale. I still am completely out of energy, and I’ve been resting ever since.

Hopefully I feel a bit better tomorrow.

Now a high-level restructuring going on in my company

I've been made redundant multiple times. In every case with my skills and background I was able to find a new, better position fairly quickly. The layoffs, traumatic as they were, turned out to be the best thing that could happen to me. A bit different these days, though, with all of the layoffs in the tech industry.

What’s the longest you worked somewhere and got made redundant? I was at my previous place 12 years when they made me redundant. The firm went under shortly after.
I started where I am now (and have been for 16 years) a week or so later. With the redundancy I did rather well out of it. However it still came as a massive shock.

I’ve been made redundant twice and the first time I’d been with the firm 10 years so got a decent payout. I was job hunting at the time and not far off handing my notice in so they were a bit shocked when I seemed happy to be laid off. That company folded 3 years after I left. I then got made redundant two years later and that was more of a shock. Both times though I’ve found a new role very quickly, in fact within a week of leaving and I’ve always gone onto better places and salaries. One bit of advice I have learned and that is to never ever accept a contract where your notice period for leaving is longer than the employers notice period for getting rid of you. That’s a condition I now insist on when starting somewhere new. If they want your commitment, then they need to show the same in return.

I didn’t know such contracts existed. I (and the firm) have a 3 month notice period.

In the professional white collar auto business if your quitting 2 weeks notice is typical on employee side .. and if you don’t burn bridges we will typically allow 1 rebound.
As long as the next job is not a direct competitor .. if it is you may get walked out that day .. with the 2 weeks pay still.

For retirement it’s traditional for 3 months to allow HR backfill your headcount.

What's on my mind, financial reporting and early preparations for the fall semester. Family stuff, planning a real holiday and a burning question after perusing my social media. How far am I willing to keep in touch with former colleagues, classmates or even friends whether personally or professionally if they have opinions (political or in other domains) I vehemently disagree with.

My advice is cut people out of your life if they are not worth the investment of your time etc.

Life is too short to keep negative influences in your circle.

I think there's definitely a line somewhere, but where that is is a personal choice. Sure, I have many friends who have different opinions from mine, and that's fine by me. I've simply ignored all those who cross the line.

Trying to decide whether to move away from having a desk setup. When I was single and also working from home a lot more, I had the Pro Display XDR and it was a great setup, but then my SO moved in with me and more of my work had to be done in person, so I sold the XDR and bought a Studio Display. Now it seems I need my desk even less, the majority of the work I do is at my desk at work, or at home on my laptop, so most of the time the desk just is there to charge my devices and for one meeting every other week. I also have OCD, so I dont let my cats into my office room, so even less incentive to stay in that room. It would be a big change for me though, I’ve had a desk setup since I was 10. I would still maintain a small desk to work at home with, but it would only be set up for charging and using my laptop as the main screen (Probably would buy a thunderbolt dock for one cable connectivity)

Using a laptop screen even for a few hours kills my neck. I rarely use one. If you do go down this route I’d recommend a laptop riser and separate keyboard and mouse.

Agreed. This is why I hate using my MacBook now that I have a desktop. I prefer to look straight up rather than kind of downwards.

I’ve already got my mStand monitor riser and external Logitech Keyboard and mouse. Those I do not plan to give up if I move to this more minimal setup

This is something I've never experienced before. I'd just finished a rehearsal when everyone's phone came on with the EAS tone. Then I ran as fast as I could back to my dorm—when I left the conservatory, it was completely dry, and by the time I crossed the intersection of Lawe St. and College Ave. (which was about a minute in), it was a complete downpour. I was out in it for a total of 3 minutes. Made it safely though.
