Indeed. Just an extension of FB as far as I’m concerned. I have no desire to share my location/likes/dislikes and everything else with them thank you.

I’ve used WhatsApp as my core messaging platform since 2009 and never ever associated it with being part of Facebook. I think they bought it recently so those of us that use it, well 99% of Europe, had no choice who decided to buy it. If I didn’t use it, I wouldn’t get social or work related messages as everybody uses it that I know. I only use iMessage with some immediate family.

Last thing I want is another way for work to contact me! I get enough of that. The handful of people I text outside of work is fine via iMessage.
FB bought WhatsApp in Feb 2014.

Work don’t have my personal number and my company mobile doesn’t come out of my laptop bag once I leave the office for that reason. Work WhatsApp’s are generally used during the day for me. It used to be a case where everybody I knew had an iPhone, but Android devices, particularly at the high end are becoming very popular with my friends and associates. I don’t like sending picture messages via iMessage to Android users as it’s an additional charge, plus iMessage group messaging is appalling compared to WhatsApp, but each to their own of course. It’s good the choice is there at least.

We just use Teams at work? How is iMessage appalling? Works fine as far as I can tell.

We use both, Teams is the primary communication tool at work.
I mean group messaging on iMessage is appalling, it could learn a lot from WhatsApp and I’m surprised it hasn’t after all these years but that’s Apple for you. iMessage is fine one on one.

We use Teams for institutional communication between the HQ in the US and the various programs around the world. Works well actually. We need something like WhatsApp to communicate and well control a group of 20-22 year old college students off on what for many is their first jaunt abroad.

Interesting. I've never understood the appeal to those types of videos, personally, but that's just me. But I'm also very uncultured, so my opinion is probably irrelevant.

It's not a matter of culture. It's the dog interacting with a performance that it sees and hears on the screen. It points to animals having a broader mindset than we generally think.

A group of us who all went to HS together have a group text thread. It started out as text, then we moved to WhatsApp. But when FB bought them, we switched to Signal and have been happy with it.

Instagram messages are not encrypted at all as far as I know. (FB Messenger just added this, but instagram doesn’t have it). That’s why if I want to have a lengthy conservation, I’ll just ask for their phone number so we can use iMessage or SMS.

Carrier. Hence why people use WhatsApp when communicating with groups who have a mix of iPhones and Androids. We’ve always been charged with chat for picture messages through SMS as they don’t fall under the unlimited messaging tariffs.
I should check my carrier out though most of our students use iPhones.

Wow. Guess that is a Europe thing as here in the states we can send pics between the two platforms without any charges.

My mother is on my mind.

Actually, my mother's birthday was - or, rather would have been - yesterday, or, rather, the day before (August 28th).

Anyway, I found myself remembering her, and missing her, above all, missing some of the stuff we used to do and enjoy doing together - meeting for a coffee, watching STNG (which we both loved) together, - normally, I prefer to watch TV (on the rare occasions I do watch TV) by myself, but we always watched STNG together, and watched travel programmes and documentaries together - attending plays, concerts, or public talks given by authors, even browsing in shops for clothes (which is something that I usually don't much care for, but used to enjoy doing when accompanied by my mother).

My flight to Toronto has been delayed by four hours, and when I get there I now have to wait 8 hours for the connecting flight to Saint John. I'm upset.

Birthday’s can be the hardest. Hopefully you were able to recall happy memories together.

On my mind is a hike up Helvellyn via Striding Edge. Hopefully the legs are up to the challenge! Leaving after breakfast.

Oh my god, that sucks!! Hopefully you still made it safely! At least it wasn't canceled outright...

I once had a flight from Chicago to Appleton (when I was going back up to college) be completely canceled because of a blizzard. American operates those flights (which are pretty short) like twice a day on those tiny Canadair Regional Jets, and from what I've observed, they get canceled left and right. Thankfully I've only been in that situation once so far.

EDIT: Oh! One other weird flight experience I've had recently was when Alaska Airlines gave me the wrong boarding pass on my flight back from Portland last month. Didn't even notice till 5 minutes before it boarded. Not to hate on Alaska Airlines too much, but I didn't really love them tbh. Seats were extremely uncomfortable, and they flew a tiny, cramped Embraer plane the whole 4 hours (similar to the ones that go from Chicago to Appleton), which probably explains most of it. They do operate a directly flight between my hometown and Portland, Oregon, which no other airline does, so that's why I flew with them.

To my mind, better a delay, and a decent amount of time that will allow you to catch - or make - a connection than a connection that is too tight.

Personally, I far prefer waiting for a few hours (even, several hours) in an airport - one can always have a beer, or a coffee or two, peruse a paper, or browse through a book - than the stress of rushing to make a very tight connection; that way leads to missed flights and lost luggage, which can be an absolute nightmare to have to deal with.

Bittersweet, in my experience.

Very bittersweet.

Yes, actually, I found myself remembering how we used to enjoy watching STNG together, utterly absorbed and entranced, and used to discuss the episodes in detail afterwards, and I recalled how we were both helpless with laughter when and while watching the episode "Qpid" which we thought hilarious (and were struck by how much the ensemble cast seemed to have been enjoying themselves; that type of episode could only work with an ensemble that knew one another exceptionally well, and relied on the audience knowing, understanding, and appreciating the characters).

Anyway, while recalling our mutual enjoyment, especially at that episode, for we laughed so much while watching it, I realised (once again) that this is something we will not never again be able to enjoy together, and it reminded me of one of the many reasons why (there are days when this hits me) I miss my mother, that funny, ferociously intelligent, compassionate person - as she as when she was still well - so much.

Enjoy.

I am honestly contemplating returning the Samsung T7 Shield I bought earlier this week, I felt like I was screwed over. For the 1 TB model, it was almost $200. I went to Best Buy to find a replacement for one of my failing external drives, and that was all they had in stock besides WD and SanDisk, which I can't trust anymore after I had 4 of those fail. I may as well return it while I have the chance, and find a cheaper alternative (or a 2 TB SSD for the same price).

I always forget how physically and emotionally draining wildfire smoke is to my body and psyche.

Earlier this week, we had downright gorgeous weather. Blue skies, slight breezes, abundant sunshine and the temps were 70-80's. Just absolutely perfect!

Fast forward to today and we have wild fire smoke which is being held in place by an inversion so the sky is a grayish-brown. AQI is approaching 300 (over 500+ in the mountains) and I have ZERO energy to do anything.

It feels very reminiscent of when we get cloudy, overcast skies in winter where everything is the same color but there is no breeze to move the air so it just settles.

Physically, I have a headache from hell that wont go away with any meds I've taken so far. Just have to wait it out like everyone else.

At the very least, I can consider myself lucky that I'm not in the group of people who are constantly worried about their homes burning down and having to live in areas directly affected by the wildfires. I'm on the outer fringe of the smoke while they're right next to the flames.
