Had a very stressful (but good) day. One class, then audition after audition after audition... should know all the results tomorrow. First one was for the choir. Auditioned for both the top choir and the next one down—I'd be happy with either, honestly. Then came the small group auditions (on piano)—auditioned for both top combo and one down. Again, I'm happy with either. Then I also auditioned for the improvisation group and the big band. (Obviously can't do all those at the same time, but I have backup plans in case some don't work out, and I'm allowed to pick and choose when I get the results!) Guess I'll find out in due time what they decided to do with me!

China class seems great, actually! Didn't quite know what I was getting myself into, given it's a 300-level history course, and I am not a history major (I mean, I could be, but also no), nor have I taken any history classes. But honestly seems manageable (with careful planning of course), and the work is about what I expected.

Friend was super nice and treated me to a nice dinner to end the day, so that was excellent!

I'm quite fond of train travel. The last trip I took was to go from Los Angeles to Monterey (well, nearby anyway) for a nephew's wedding. I've taken the train to Santa Barbara quite a number of times but I'd never been further north on the train and I was quite unprepared for how astonishingly wild and beautiful the unoccupied California coast is for a number of hours shortly after leaving SB.

It really is. My friend from the Midwest was blown away by the beauty of the Pacific coast when we drove on Highway 1 from Dana Point to Santa Barbara.

Sad that portions of Highway 1 in Big Sur have been closed for years and show no signs of re-opening. :(

I've been to California many times, either visiting or to play at festivals (was in a band that does festivals out there). But I've never driven along the coast, so that's something I'll have to do at some point!

It's definitely a shame that it's become such a problem keeping Highway 1 open in that stretch.

Any company that institutes layoffs because of price gouging customers should be federally investigated.

Company I work for today announced that up to 95% of US based jobs are being laid off because the revenue is just not coming in. The flip side to that is they quadrupled the prices we charge our customers and said we're going to move 80% of the jobs to India whether they like it or not.

When our customers learned of this and didn't want to/couldn't pay the new prices, we lost some BIG contracts and thus revenue and these layoffs are the result of corporate greed. I have no doubt that anyone with a "C" in their title will get million dollar bonuses for "saving the company money" by moving these jobs to India.

For now, my job is safe but I dont know for how long but a lot of people who I have worked with for the past 12 years are suddenly on the receiving end of the "We're too ***** cheap to keep you so there's the door" conversations.

I've been fired from jobs and I've voluntarily left jobs but I've never been involved in a layoff situation. However, the more I see it unfold, the more I realize that un-checked corporate greed is dangerous for our society.

Off to update my resume...

I was made redundant at my last job after 12 years (and relocating to the other end of the country). But it completely closed not long after I left. Good luck in your job hunting.

For those of you who don't read the NFL thread, I had inquired if anyone had seen @Rafterman as he was a regular in that thread as well as others I participate in and I was missing his witty repartee. We got a message on Tuesday that @Rafterman was killed in a terrible car accident in June.

I tend to be wary of new users announcing news such as this, but if it is true, this breaks my heart. I only knew him online as most of us did, but considered him a friend. I know some of you engaged in conversation with him so I thought you would like to hear this very sad news. 🥲

Oh my, that is just awful. I recognise his username but not from that thread as I don't know the first thing about NFL. Oh dear, that is awful news to hear about a member from here.

I vaguely recognized his uername and when I looked, I immediately recognized Rafterman's distinctive avatar. Occasionally I'd see posts from him here-and-there on MR -- he always had something interesting to add to a discussion!

As for the source of information reporting his [purported] death, yes, it is wise to be wary of news of this nature without accompanying reliable backup information such as an obituary, news articles (in situations such as death by vehicular accidents) and other information which can be verified. We have had unreliable information about someone's death posted on MR before, even by someone who was a long-time member here; I certainly would not trust a brand-new member who is unknown to any of us.

That is terrible and tragic news if true, and I am very sorry to learn it.

I always enjoyed @Rafterman's posts and remarks, and do recall his distinctive avatar.

We were in Germany Wednesday 9/11 thru Monday 9/16, home now in Michigan. Upon seeing the recent news on pagers and walkie-talkies , makes me wonder what that may mean for airport travel, security checkpoints, etc.
^^ per forum rules no political talk on this , just security stuff

They have been worried about larger electronic devices (laptops and tablets) for years. Smaller ones like mobile phones and pagers pose additional issues. On the negative side, It’s not clear if most of the current common screening method would be able to detect any issues within small electronics devices. On the positive side (sort of) Since they’re small, they seem to pose mostly a threat to individuals not to an entire aircraft.

This is old news, but I made it into all ensembles I auditioned for, which is great. Though since I had to choose, I'm doing the choir (less advanced since it rehearses fewer times per week - top choir has a grueling rehearsal schedule of four times a week!), and the first jazz small group. Totally different genres/styles, but equally fun! Both carry one credit each (yes, lessons and ensembles count!)

Not been well yesterday and today. Covid or flu like symptoms. My Behçet’s is also giving me grief so my mouth, hands and other areas are inflamed.
So basically another day of being isolated trying not to pass it on to Mrs AFB.

After several days of thunderstorms and downpours (and rapidly decreasing temperatures), something approaching an Indian summer has put in an appearance, with the thermometer registering 28C.

I have a massage (bliss) booked for later today......
