Yes, that bitter cold is on my mind. Actually, last night, it was snowing! Snow in November!

And there is still all too much by way of (unmelted) snow on the ground and on the roofs of houses.

Brrr.

Lots of layers on, and the thought of more layers is strangely appealing.

As is hibernation. Or migration south
Just woke up to 3 inches of snow on the ground, actually. Supposed to keep going all morning. Think I will be trudging to class today.

It’s supposed to get to double figures at the weekend.
Yes, I have also read this.
Right now I’m not sure we have made positive figures in the last few days.
No, we haven't.
In the office today. At least it’s warm in here. Well for the 4 of us where there is room for 50.
Glad to hear it.

For my part, I think a warming chicken stew - which is puttering away on the stove - might be in order for later this afternoon, or for this evening.

When there is snow on the ground, something hot is called for.

Hot soup, hot stew and as the French call it : vin chaud (hot wine) or as we call it mulled wine!

Both necessary and tasty in cold weather (snow in November......??!!)

Well, my chicken dish (and the chicken comes in the form of organic and free range chicken thighs, skin and bone attached (better for flavour) sold to me last Saturday at the farmers' market by the people who reared the fowl in question) which is, (or will be) a sort of cross between the classic "Jewish penicillin" and the equally traditional Belgian Waterzooi.

However, as I desire that wonderful broth (the dish started off with a classic soffritto, or mire-poix, - slowly sautéed finely diced celery, carrots, and onion, and, in my case, also, a finely diced (smallish) full head of garlic), I may well forego the addition of double cream and tempered egg yolk that is integral to the finished dish of Waterzooi.

However, there will also be leeks, and potatoes.

From general practitioners to surgeons in hospitals, all agenda's appear to be full for many months ahead.
So if you're not already an existing patient, you're in trouble since you won't get an appointment.
Oh yea, we have that in Switzerland as well, in my experience my GP is usually available but for specialists it is just like you describe. Pretty annoying especially given the high prices we pay for medical insurance - yes it's private here. Generally it is pretty high quality and I am typing this now because of the Swiss medical system as I had a life-threatening condition 6 years ago. Still needs improvement.

This comic was in the paper just last week here in Norway:

2024-11-08.jpg

Rough translation:

Doc: I've noted a river of mucus, headache, you're almost coughing up both lounges and have 40,2°C (104.4°F) in fever.

Doc: And now?
Jokke: Tip top!

Doc: Fantastic! Out clever system with 4 months waiting time at your General Practitioner delivers yet again!

Doc: Most people are healthy!
Jokke: Or dead?
Doc: Or dead, of course!

Nice, that sounds like an awesome long term goal. Mind if I ask what NAS you use? I have a couple myself, including both custom linux based ones and a Synology NAS that I use for my apple products.
Currently, I don’t have a working NAS for a variety of reasons. But I’d like to get both servers back up and running again.

The issue I ran into with the servers is that only one gigabit Ethernet connection resulted in extremely slow transfer speeds (only about 120-150MB/s). Issue is, even 10GbE only gets me about 1GB/s read and write, which is a lot faster, but still not that fast. Either 40 or 100GbE would really be the only way to make it work well, which would be extremely expensive.

I do wonder if there's a way to directly connect a PC and a server using an 100GbE cable, because that would be a lot cheaper - just one cable and two 100GbE cards. But, I still think at that point, it'd probably just be a better idea to RAID a bunch of SSDs together in a single PC.

Tenerife is calling you.

Im thinking about buying a semi-new car. Maybe a 2019 civic, as my current vehicle is showing its age. I hate the idea of car payments, but I dont want another older car that will be riddled with issues.

So I take it you dont just use NAS for archiving data, and that you actively read and write to it regularly? For me, I use them as a backup device, which speed is hardly an issue.

Idk. I think it might be nice to use VE Pro to be able to offload VST plugins and sample libraries so I won’t be using 32+ GB of RAM on the host machine. A lot of people do that, and the idea of having all my sample libraries on a server is extremely appealing. Then also using it for archival storage.

Unfortunately I don’t know anything about cars. I don’t have one, and I probably won’t buy one until after I graduate college (with me moving between states across the country multiple times a year, having a car at this point just makes no sense). I’m fine borrowing a parent’s vehicle the few times I do need one.

As for me, this is the worst I’ve slept in a really long time. No idea why I’m awake at 5:00 AM and not able to go back to sleep. This will make for a very tiring day (thankfully no classes).

Waking at 5 am is not that different from most days for me. The older I get the less able I am to sleep in.
Not waking up until 7 am is a lie in these days.

When I did wake I was convinced it was Saturday for a few minutes. Then remembered it was Friday. At least I’m WFH today.

Perhaps you ate something (sweet) late last night?
Or perhaps something is on your mind, even unconsciously?

I want all my systems to be rack-mounted.

If you are somewhat handy you can construct your own rack without having to purchase components which are designed for rack installation. I have a 10 GbE switch, Cisco firewall, NAS, RAID enclosure, and an 8 bay JBOD enclosure all on one rack 15" wide, 26" high with 3 shelves. Some components are a bit wider than the 15" and protrude a bit.

You can size the shelf intervals based on component size and order extra shelves as needed. Assume you could put wheels on it. Put all of your existing equipment on it at a reasonable price.

if you're not already an existing patient, you're in trouble since you won't get an appointment.

In my area it can take months even if you are an existing patient. Luckily they do offer same day services, but not with your regular doctor.

only one gigabit Ethernet connection resulted in extremely slow transfer speeds (only about 120-150MB/s).

A hardware 8 bay RAID 5 device would theoretically give you 7 x 250 MB/s (depending on the disks) or around 1750 MB/s. I actually get on my Promise 8 Bay - 1522/1511; write/read. That's just above the 10 GbE limit, but can easily be handled by the thunderbolt port on the Promise.

If your NAS is disk based it is the NAS disk throughput that will be the limitation, not the pipe. Due to the additional overhead of the NAS and network or IP over thunderbolt it will be much slower. Sometimes I can get 500 MB/s on my 2 7 disk NAS units, but most of the time it is significantly less due to network and NAS overhead.

I'm annoyed, disgusted, disheartened and discouraged by the housing market...

So I'm walking my dog this morning, like I do every day, and we walk past a house that is on our route. I notice a for sale sign in their yard so out of curiosity, I look it up online. I then proceed to slap my forehead and giggle in an annoyed tone...

The down payment is $70,000. That's about what my wife and I make in a year combined. For a house that is 77 years old...

Like....what the **** are we doing here??? I just get so frustrated at the fact that people in the lower class of this stupid pyramid are the ones shouldering the burden of everything but yet, even with working two full time jobs and making sure we have good credit, affording a house that old and small, is such a pipe dream anymore. I know I'm not the only one frustrated by this as there are millions of people in the same boat but come on...this is stupid. CEO's get to have multiple yachts and go to space but I can't buy my wife and dog a home.

I can't wait for all of this to burn to the ground...again...because it will.

Is a minimum 20% down payment required by the bank in order to grant you a mortgage?

I think anymore, yes, it's a requirement but I'm not an expert on that subject. I think it's to avoid "sub-prime" lenders from taking out a loan on a house that suddenly, they can't afford. Ya know, what happened in 2008. But with 6-7% interest over 30 years, asking anyone anymore to drop 20% on a house that, IMO, is severely over-inflated on price, is downright theft but hey...gotta protect the banks.

I have not been to Idaho. The house looks somewhat in a rural area and is not very big. I am shocked by the price but I guess that is normal now. Is it within commuting distance to a city where people would likely work or is it for people who want to be alone, far from the hustle and bustle.

That particular house is minutes from Target, Best Buy, numerous restaurants and is in a city that is growing more than it can handle. Doesn't help that we're also 20 minutes from the capital which is growing even faster so yeah...it's within commuting distance of almost anything anymore. 30 years ago, this used to the be the sticks and middle of no where. Not anymore. When you factor in the population growth from other states, property taxes that have quadrupled in a decade and our relatively low cost of living, this entire area is exploding. The ONE thing that gets overlooked is that Idaho's wages have remained stagnant and are near the bottom when compared to the nation.

So...
  • Stagnant wages that haven't kept up with cost of living/inflation
  • Property taxes continuing to go up
  • Population influx that the city/valley was never designed for
All of this equates to a disaster waiting to happen.

I hear you. I live in the most expensive city in Canada. A 520sqft 1 bed one bath condo costs roughly 650k. Happy times.

Where I live, that house would be going for at least $1 million.

It's disheartening, as a young person who is still in school, to know that my generation is essentially screwed as far as home-ownership goes. Most people I know who have graduated and have jobs now are paying at least 50% of their income on rent.
