Is it specifically the chill you don't like, or just everything about winter?
I dislike everything about winter.

The cold, the wet, the darkness - lack of light - the dreary, soul-destroying lack of life, natural light, warmth - the short days, long nights, snow, ice, - there has never been a time in my life when I liked winter, and now, I know I loathe it.

Now, on the other hand, I thrill to spring, and I love summer; at times, I even enjoy the onset of autumn.....

Could you maybe think of Winter as a time to enjoy the indoors? When it gets dark early, coze up with a book and some coffee? Take advantage (when possible) of the dark mornings by sleeping in? Go for a walk in the fresh snow? I think everything looks so pretty after a fresh snow fall.

Sorry if I'm coming off as overly optimistic. Winter is my favorite time of the year.

Absolutely.

I'm an indoors introvert, in any case.
When it gets dark early, coze up with a book and some coffee?
Exactly my idea of fun; yes, I do this, both winter and summer.
Take advantage (when possible) of the dark mornings by sleeping in?
If only I could sleep until the equinox in March, in other words, hibernate, yes.....

But yes, when I can, I do sleep in - and never cease to be amazed at just how much (and how long, and how deeply) I can sleep in deepest, darkest, winter.
Go for a walk in the fresh snow?
Ah, thanks, but no thanks.

Perhaps in company, but never, (ever) by preference or by myself.

I think everything looks so pretty after a fresh snow fall.
Yes, but mountains, the sea, vineyards and Mediterranean sunsets also look pretty; actually, - to my mind - ancient urban settings (in almost any climate) look pretty....
Sorry if I'm coming off as overly optimistic. Winter is my favorite time of the year.
In that case, I hope you enjoy it.

Personally, I love light, and heat, and warmth......but, each to their own.

winter......hmmm...NO!!!

I lived in Minnesota too long.

I will say the first snow of the year was indeed beautiful and fun, but after that; usually there was frozen snow on the ground continuously from some time in December until late in March when the ground reappeared.....and when the snow melted, everything was covered in disgusting grime that had been in the snow all winter. But then around the 7th of April it snowed again.......and everyone loved that snow, in part since it was the LAST snow of winter, but also because it was indeed beautiful......and thank God! It was the last snow of winter!!!

And then it was rainy, wet and cold for another month or so.....then the mosquitoes hatched.

I’m with @Scepticalscribe on this. It’s such a poor quality of light in winter. It rains almost all of the time. We do get some snow, but just the odd few days.

It’s cold (especially in my house) all the time. So thermal underwear, many layers and lots of tea is the norm.

Then there are some dates I absolutely loathe in winter. Dates I would happily strike off the calendar without a second thought.
I detest everything about Christmas which starts earlier and earlier every year. Such a depressing time of year.

As it is I’ve only just woken up from a terrible nights sleep (I was awake from midnight to around 5). But I’m warming myself up before I can face getting up and dressed in the cold.

Then I’ll go inspect the fences.

The 90mph winds that are battering North, West and South Wales along with South West England at the moment. Lots of damage and a day I won’t be venturing out.
Stay safe. It’s vile here. Glad I haven’t got to head out anywhere. Fences and trees are okay for now. The amount of rain is concerning given how swollen our rivers are.

Cheers will do. My wife stayed in Cardiff last night for her works party and is shopping with friends at the moment where she said a lot of the shops have stayed closed. I put off replacing 2 fence posts at the end of the summer but the brace I put on them has done remarkably well thankfully. Certainly the worst winds I’ve seen in a while.

If anything I would say the winds are getting worse here. The gusts are strong. Just did a quick tour around the property and everything seems to be surviving for now. TV aerial is defiantly having a good go at leaving though!

Winter is as close to perfect as you can get in the southwest, because it doesn't get very cold. 50s and 60s. But summer is way too hot--so much so that you can't really do anything outside. On the contrary, winter in the midwest is far too cold (also to the point you really can't do anything outside), but the summers are a lot more reasonable.

I do, too. I would rather be in the heat than the cold. But I suppose this could be because I grew up in a hot, dry climate, and so it's something I'm used to. However, there is very much a limit. Anything above 100 degrees is too hot.

I uploaded my latest tech review only to discover the song I used in the intro (and spent over an hour composing an opening cinematic sequence to) is copyright protected so I had to redo the entire intro.

I used the following

While it's a decent substitute, it isn't nearly as nice as the first song I had prepped.

Damn you Youtube.
Aren't a lot of those classical pieces in the public domain? Unless you're trying to use someone's performance of it, then it shouldn't be an issue.

You can find a lot of royalty-free cinematic music, too. You probably will have to pay for the service, but there's plenty out there. It might not be exactly what you're looking for, but those stock audio sites are definitely workable.

Then of course writing your own music is also an option. I know quite a few people who write the music to their YouTube videos. Then you have total control over everything and don't have to worry about copyright. Music production has become so accessible over the years, and good sample libraries have gotten a lot cheaper.

Last time we had 90mph winds, it was also a hailstorm, and it nearly took the roof off our house. During that storm, there were quite a few houses in the same block that sustained much worse damage--we just got lucky. Stay safe!!

The same question pops into my mind occasionally because program notes at opera, symphony, and ballet performances often include permissions and copyright information even when a work was written hundreds of years ago.

I think—I am not a lawyer—that while a composition from, say, the 1700's is itself in the public domain, a specific arrangement or edition is not. One publisher's name that comes up a lot is Boosey & Hawkes...my impression is that it is the classical equivalent of the company Paul McCartney owns that holds a massive amount of rights. In fact, at one point in the not so distant past, McCartney and Michael Jackson controlled the rights to just about every song and composition you can think of through the publishing companies they owned.

[rm5: isn't it time you set up a company to hold the rights to your works? ;-) ]

Quite separately from the copyright of the original composition, somebody will own the rights to record and distribute copies of the performance since the actual performance is also a protected creative expression.

I'd love winter somewhere else, such as Australia, where it's summer. ;)

I'm about to scream about delivery services.

I have an order that was supposed to be delivered Wednesday, Dec. 4th. The shipping label was created.

I ordered two items that were supposed to arrive together on Thursday, since I can't use them separately. They were both in the same facility about seven miles away, one arrived 12 hours later in the day than the other. One arrived on time and the other is sitting, apparently until the 10th. I placed an order with Amazon to have a functional but inferior item to be delivered tomorrow, even though rushing the order cost me about one third extra for the shipping.

I placed an order for some Korean groceries over the weekend and they're supposed to be here today, but I got a notification about 45 minutes ago that they're going to be here today, and the time suggested that they would be here before the notification was sent.

First world problems are the worst!!! 😆

Agreed.
Normally Amazon delivers within 24 hours for Prime members (yes, I know, I pressed the wrong button...). However, I ordered a stack of stuff last Sunday, expecting it to be here Monday, Tuesday at the latest. No. Apparently Amazon Aus. had shutdown for a week. I would have to wait at least 8 days to get my stuff. I checked with previous things that I had ordered, that had been delivered overnight. They too, had an 8 day wait. Maybe they just gave the staff a week off at the beginning of December so they would all work 24 hours a day from Christmas Eve through till Boxing Day.
Anyway, it all got delivered yesterday (Saturday), except that the delivery person found a new place to hide it on our property. This is the fifth place they found.

Another time, I ordered a pair of books (Vol 1 & 2 in a series), from the same AbeBooks vendor in the Channel Islands.
Now, you would think they would put the two books into one package and send them together.
No.
One book went via air and arrived in a few days, the other went the scenic route on a ship and took three weeks.

Third time, I ordered a new vacuum cleaner from a vendor 40 kms away. It had tracking. I followed it from the warehouse to the main distribution centre in Chullora, Sydney. Via the tracking, I watched it as it prowled the aisles of the distribution centre for a week. Finally it broke out and escaped to the local distribution centre where I was able to pick it up and take it to its new forever home.

So, Australia has a “porch pirate” problem too? I thought that was a strictly ‘Murican thing…

I hope that they weren't cleaning the distribution centre with the vacuum cleaner.

Amazon here is so brutal toward employees that I'm surprised that they're allowed restroom breaks. I'm trying to remember, but a safety supervisor said that they are loosely timed. In any case, my package arrived today, as it was meant to be. The actual premium for one day delivery was about half again the price of shipping for Wednesday. That isn't a bad deal.

I remember UPS was holding on to something I wanted before the end of the year. I called to ask what was happening since they already had it. They all laughed. The piece that I was expecting Thursday was able to be picked up at the UPS location for an extra US$5.99. Since the service was called "2nd Day Air", I just figured that they'd have pride in their service and get it to me.

Alas, Californians don't take work all that seriously. I'm probably just too Japanese.

That was the song I used instead. the original song was by a very small artist who I thought wouldn't be an issue, but it was.
