As I had a car at my disposal this morning, - and the weather was not appalling - I paid a quick visit to the farmers' market; the excellent German stall - the best for organic vegetables had informed me yesterday (by phone) that today was to be their last appearance until next March.

Thus, I bought eggs (their own, free range, organic), garlic, parsley, fresh salad greens (the last of them), the last of their cooking apples, the last of their peppers, along with some onions and carrots. Another stall had cherry tomatoes, thyme, rosemary, coriander, and I added an aubergine (eggplant).

Oranges were bought, as were olives, and two litres of Spanish olive oil at the olive oil stall.

The French bakery - I had phoned them yesterday, and also called in to pay them in advance en route from the library - had kept bread for me, rye bread and a baguette.

And I also called into both the cheesemonger, and a wine merchant, where cheese - and wine (entirely French, I realised) were purchased.

A car meant that I could pay a visit to the cemetery, to spend some time at the graves of my parents, a nice, gentle, contemplative time.

Loverly sunny morning. But now it’s become grey and dull.
It wasn’t warm this morning, but feels a lot cooler since the sun has gone.
We did mostly get a wash load dry outside though, so that’s something.

Also managed a walk with Mrs AFB earlier.

Other than that been a pretty standard day. Checked on some images I took yesterday with my Dad down in Essex. First time I’ve been there for years.
I was in London for work so met up with my Dad for a meal and a walk the following day.

Every time I see him he looks so much older. He stoops as he walks now. Limps as well. Hopefully a knee replacement surgery scheduled for January will help with the limp at least.
He’s not getting any younger. The inevitable reality of age is catching up on him. He used to have such a physical presence. Especially in his younger days when he played football and was doing manual work.
Now he seems like a shadow of his former self.

Glad to see that you had a good time when meeting with your Dad.

We had brief glimpses of a pallid and pale sun, before the inevitable - if uneven - dark charcoal grey cloud cover appeared. At least, it didn't rain.

Damned cold, though; however, I wrapped up well.

Heavy snow this morning and early afternoon, now heavy rain and then snow tomorrow. After midnight on Sunday it will be -11 so it will be very slippery walking anywhere on Monday.

Commiserations. Hope it gets warmer soon.
It will but in January and February we are pretty much guaranteed a couple of weeks or more of -20 to -30. Not as bad as the -40 I experienced on a few occasions in Montreal. I can manage the deep freeze but since I stopped owning a car 10 years ago it is the ice caused by fluctuating temperatures which is more problematic from a walking perspective.

Grim. Feel bad for complaining about our much milder weather. We don’t get anywhere near that much here. Usually just a few days of snow a year.

Speaking of road trips.
We had to pop down to Mittagong (about 50kms away down the M35) to get MiLady's overlocker fixed (before it ended up in the recycling bin).

First trip was on Monday. It was an absolutely spifflicating day. 24 C, sunny, light cloud, light wind. Minimal idiots on the road.
Return trip was on Friday. Still sunny, light cloud, light wind, but 35 C this time, and a good array of idiots on the road.

However, machine was fixed, MiLady is happy.

Our Libraries has lot's of activities: https://bergenbibliotek.no/arrangement <- Norwegian link, use translate.

They arrange things like Reading clubs/circles, Game Nights, Lectures on a variety of subjects, Arts & Craft evenings, Study groups for things like (local) history and genealogy, Language courses (mostly Norwegian for foreigners), Movie nights (mostly for kids), House concerts, and much much more. All for free.

The main library in Bergen also has updated newspapers and magazines, and computers with internet access you can lend.

They also have special collections for local "celebrities", like Ole Bull and Edvard Grieg.

And, in addition to books (both physical books and e-books), you can lend music (CDs, vinyl, I think vinyl is not for home lendigng, but they have listening stations on the library with good chairs), films (DVDs or streaming), games, and more. Like musical instruments or how about a sowing machine?

You can also book meeting rooms, if you need to coordinate something and work from home or similar.

But, many think like you, so the Libraries in Norway has actually had a campaign about this all this fall (examples in Norwegian):

Here is a link to the wonderful Helsinki Central Library and all it offers...

The students in the music program I co-direct presented their final concert yesterday. I am so very proud of them! A lot of absolute beginners this year who had previously never touched an instrument, and they're already able to improvise confidently.

This program has become an enormous success, and has expanded state-wide. I've been lucky to see it grow from its very beginnings, too. I joined as a student 10 years ago when it started, and now teach my share of classes when I'm on break. And the director is just a wonderful guy. I really don't know of any music program like it.

Feeling quite rough today. IBS type symptoms. Not like me to get ill.
Hopefully it passes soon though.

I was going into the office tomorrow, but I think I’ll work from home instead.

Aw man, just learned that possibly one of the greatest tabla players, Zakir Hussain, has passed away. What a tremendous loss. I was lucky to see him twice in concert.

Finally put my iPhone's panoramic camera setting to the test with this beautiful photo (taken in Oakhurst, California, near Yosemite):

Now that my relaxing, recharging trip is over, it's finals week and it's time to grind 😩

Wonderful photo, good luck with your finals! I remember finals fondly with relief those are over. Mind you, final semester reporting as academic support staff is also pretty stressful.

Yeah, agreed--beautiful photo! Glad you were able to get out for a little bit to relax--I did the same at the end of the term, and it helped a lot. And best of luck on your finals! (One of the many perks of being on trimesters is that I finished my finals almost a month ago.)

Does that mean you get three sets of finals??
Yes, it does, but if it means I can spend Thanksgiving with my family and also have a two-week spring break between terms 2 and 3, I'll take it! The 10 weeks go by EXTREMELY quickly (sometimes almost too fast).

Sipping on a warm Vanilla and Honey tea as I wrap up my tasks for the day.

I'm really enjoying my time working in Cyber Security so far. While it’s about 80% reports and meetings, the field itself is incredibly fascinating, and I could see myself exploring it for the rest of my life.

On that note, I have a Penetration Tester exam coming up at the end of January. I’m well-versed in the defensive side of security, but working through this material is opening my eyes to the countless ways security controls can be bypassed. Learning to think and act like a hacker is proving to be invaluable; especially when my job is to defend against them.

After this exam I will pivot to the illustrious CISSP credential, and then after that drop the cert-chasing for a while and just focus on building up my raw skillset.

I love having a solid plan that I believe in. Makes the tea taste better.

Hopefully you're all doing well as Christmas approaches.
