Mini is tempting, but as I get older, I've found my arms are too short for the mini screen size.

Having old eyes myself, that made me LOL...

The only video editor on it is Davinci Resolve and even then you'd be better off using the Mac version

A simple Google search gives me a list of 51 video editing apps for the iPad...

Most I have not heard of, but you state the ONLY video editor is DaVinci Resolve; well, iMovie (and Clips) are free from Apple, and LumaFusion seems to be the de facto top dog for iPad video editing apps...?

Not how pros work. If my studio uses Adobe Premiere or final cut I have to use that software, I can't just start using Resolve. And then even if you're a one man studio, a freelancer, having to find a replacement for every single app you've been using up to this point is an insane task. And in most cases the replacement is much worse. Like photoshop on iPad still lacks layer comps, and no drawing app on ipad supports them right now.
Ipad has "apps" right now, that's it. Not software suits. Ok for someone messing with art projects in after school hours but nothing more.
Our studio uses ToonBoom software suit (storyboarding+animation) combined with Maya for CG sets. The most common animation software setup in the world really. There's no way at all to do any one of those things on an ipad.

Another option is Affinity (my preference is LR across all of my devices). It's a one-time buy.
Yes I use it too. I didn’t mention it as it’s not the same as lr - more like ps.
Yeah, that made zero sense - a lack of knowledge about what is out there. LumaFusion is really nice to use for 4K editing on my M1 12.9.
Not only that but the only app they mentioned - davinci, isn’t even out yet 😂

It’s pretty obvious an iPad can’t replace an entire studio setup with highly advanced software suits.

No one here is saying it can.

But then again you can’t exactly dump most of that on an mba and expect it to work with any efficiency either.

Unsure what all that has to do with my simple statement that there is more than DaVinci Resolve for video editing on the iPad...?

Davinci resolve isn’t released yet. Until then (if it’s as good as we hope at least), there is Luma Fusion which is generally regarded as the best.

Edit: sorry misread. Thought it was a question. But nontheless, davinci is yet to be released.

Hey all,

I'm fortunate to own the latest iPad Mini and I love it but whenever Apple release any new products I always take a look and get a desire to change.
Regarding the iPad Pro I just don't understand the point of it.

So first of all I looked at my family/friends who own iPads and they own a mixture between the iPad/Air/Mini. And what do they use them for? - Browsing, Social Media, Drawing, Colouring, Reading, Streaming Shows.
None of my family/friends own an iPad Pro but I've met a number of customers/colleagues that have one. I asked what they use them for and they use them for....... Browsing, Social Media, Drawing, Colouring, Reading, Streaming Shows.

So I'm at a loss, whats the point of a iPad Pro? What can you do on a iPad Pro that you can't or will find difficult on another iPad in the range? To me it seems like buying a Ferrari to drive to the supermarket to pick up some snacks for the weekend.

P.S Sorry if this comes across like I'm slating iPad Pro owners/fans - I'm just curious. Also I'm slightly jealous as I think it looks great.
I can see that the iPad Pro 12.9 inch is in another class all together than other iPad because of the display size and quality. But if you take the 11 inch iPad Pro M1, which I own, I get your point. I use my iPad Pro for much the same list of things you mentioned above (browsing, social media, streaming, etc…). It’s largely a consumption device for me as I’d bet it is for most people.

What could I do on my 11 inch iPad Pro M1 that I couldn’t do on the iPad Air? Nothing that I can think of:). Now if you take the new M2 iPad…that’s another question all together. With the M2 iPad, I can almost touch my screen with the Apple Pencil and see a reaction. Wow😊.

Perhaps instead of calling it the iPad Pro they should call it the iPad Premium (ie premium features being promotion display technology and much better speakers). The new 10.9 inch iPad even has a couple of features that are more pro than what the iPad Pros have….a keyboard folio option with a full set of function keys and a landscape mounted front facing camera (ie so you don’t look like a dork looking into the side of your iPad on zoom calls:)).

The M1 iPad pros are already overspec‘d for what you can actually do with them (ie lack of pro apps). The M2 iPad pros will be even more overspec’d with the M2 allowing users to dream even more about the myriad of things they can’t do with their iPads😊

All that being said….the M1 iPad Pro is the best iPad I’ve ever had and it’s my most used Apple device…by a long shot. Why did I buy it over the other iPad options at the time? Because I wanted it:)

My main driver this time around has been screensize. If there was a 12-13” Air I would probably be happy with that. But right now if you want/need a bigger canvas then Pro is your only option.

Apple has fully taken the position of making people feel like their months old product is worthless.

That’s a very good question. As someone who bought a 2021 2TB M1 IPad Pro, you could say I went all in. I love the iPad and I know I don’t use it to its fullest potential. For me, I’d rather purchase big and hold onto it for 5 or more years rather than midlevel and upgrading every 2-3 years. I figure the overall cost remains about the same. Everyone can make their choice. This is mine.

Basically, those plethora of ”apps“ are insufficient for serious use in a professional setting for the time being or ever, if you haven’t got the point already.

I haven’t bought a new iPad since the original iPad Air and it won’t turn on unless it’s plugged in at this point. I hadn’t bought a new iPhone since the X came out. My 2013 Macbook Air died in 2018 and I couldn’t afford to replace it. I have essentially scrimped and saved and dealt with failing hardware for the last 4 years, and so in the past 12 months, Apple has gotten a lot of my money - a new macbook pro last fall, the new iphone 14 pro this fall, and I’ve got a 12.9” M2 ipad pro on the way now.
For my job, I am essentially sitting around waiting for something to happen, and I find myself with a lot of empty time - best spent on streaming and creative pursuits. I have been doing a lot of day dreaming about pattern designing/illustration, hand lettering, and photo editing etc. but have not had the means to accomplish all of this and the macbook pro is a pain in the butt to lug around. An iPad is the perfect, easy pairing to do it all. I went with the 12.9” because the screen size gives me what my aging eyes need and additionally, I can use it for work out classes in my home gym.

Man, y'all taking things out of context; I never said a thing about iPad video editing apps for "serious use", I simply corrected the poster at the top of this who incorrectly stated that DaVinci Resolve was the only video editor on iPadOS...

Sheeh, go touch grass...

The whole discussion context doesn’t even exist properly from the beginning. A few of us just default to “established apps” that have sufficient feature sets. Idk what you are hoping for. 😑😐

Yes, communication with tons of implications that are not outlined beforehand is tricky. I bet you’ve seen this many times in your life. But that’s how this reply flow goes.

Maybe I should have gone with my initial thought of correcting dude that DaVinci Resolve is not even out for iPadOS yet, and reminded them that there was also iMovie and LumaFusion for video editing on iPad...

Didn't mean to ruffle serious users tail feathers with the extra four dozen crap apps... ;^p

This might make a good poll—“Why did/would you get a Pro over the Air in 2022?” Bigger size, Promotion, more storage, Face ID, status symbol, too much money in bank, etc… all the reasons listed in this thread. Maybe this poll already exists somewhere?

Anyway, put me down for bigger 12.9” size, larger storage, more ram for less refresh (correct?), better speakers, and Pencil hover (at least for now I believe only on Pros).

So I'm at a loss, whats the point of a iPad Pro?
I’ve owned a bunch of iPads over the years, had a mini for awhile and it was great until apple started making bigger phones and then I didn’t see the point of the mini - so got a regular ipad and that was fine but I found myself wondering what a bigger screen experience was going to be like and took the plunge on a M1 12.9” ipad pro and keyboard… not cheap but the user experience is superb… It replaced my laptop for 90% of laptop duties and meant I could change how I worked. The big screen is great for watching films and shows, great for games, for surfing the web and seeing as i’m a little older having a bigger better quality screen helps with the old peepers too.

Does it replace my laptop … no. Do I want it to… no. I just wanted the biggest ipad screen I could get… The only time I miss the ipad mini is when I’m using the kindle app as it can get a bit heavy to hold, but there are ways around that and on that subject - if you have an interest in graphic novels and comics, then a large iPad Pro is the only way to read them digitally… they look amazing, as do magazines.

It may not be as discreet as a smaller ipad but everything looks amazing on it… and all this is before I get into any of the apps that just work so well on the iPad Pro…

I’ll admit when I bought it, I thought it was going to be overkill… but then you find all these cool apps that just sing on the ipad pro and you wonder how you used to go about life without one…

An interesting side note would be that I felt I wasn’t using my phone as much, so it enabled me to get a smaller phone and not have to get a new phone every year… think I’m on a 3 year cycle on the phone front…
