I want an OS X tablet like the Suface Pro that can be a tablet or a docked laptop (with keyboard and trackpad). Why does Apple ignore this segment?
I dont’ think they have, I just think they are too blinded by their own goals to acknowledge it.

Many of us are in the same boat as you, and as an IPP user, there are many items I would love to have added to this device. Just got a 2nd hand Surface pro, I like it, but I strongly dislike Windows 10 in touch mode only.

It is just not Apple’s approach. From the beginning, Apple was against laptops with touch screens. I do not think Apple will ever make a convertible tablet running macOS. Apple will rather update the iPad Pro over the years to become a substitute for a laptop. But that will take time, not happening any time soon.

Yeah, this precisely.

Apple does not want to go fast and add features to their iOS. It waits and takes the go slowly approach. Plus, programmers that can upgrade sophisticated features cost a lot of money to hire that type of talent - cutting edge! Apple just cannot justify spending it money on iOS features to try to match it competitors. It will just try to do major feature improvements and let the marketing department hype it as the "greatest"! Most Apple users never have used Android or Windows products so they do not know the difference. Its new and greatest improved features are usually 4 or 5 years old from the competition. Apple is smart to do this! It save a ton on cutting edge software development and can just take it time to do it right and hire programmers at the right price since it old technology and known by the time Apple want it!

Even if they have their own goals and do not want to make a touch screen laptop, isn't money the bigger motivation. They know there is demand for it. A powerful tablet running macOS, with a keyboard attachment and mouse/pointer support. They have to know it would sell like crazy. I would buy it. I just don't understand why they can't get their heads out of the sand and give the customers what they want.

Simple.

Apple want you to buy an iPhone, iPad, MacBook and probably and an iMac. The more you buy the richer they get. They’ll do this as long as they can.

Microsoft are putting their eggs in one basket after all the phone was not a success. They have nothing to lose.

I think they both do in certain ways. Surface wants to be like an iPad with Apps and Touchscreen, but really is still a laptop, as their apps just don't work as well or have near as many as Apple. Apple wants the iPad to be both too, but still functions better with Apps. I tried the Surface twice and to me the iPad is the best at both, at least what I use mostly than the Surface. Besides other things, like more compact, faster, better batter life, etc too.

Apple seems to only compete with themselves. If they cared about surface, they would have added at least ONE iPad specific feature when iOS 12 dropped. I think they’re raking in the rough, getting complacent and don’t really care that much about how long it takes for iPad to become more capable. I think they view it as “we have this cushion of money that will let us take all the time we want updating the iPad to be a better machine”. They’re in no rush.

That’s why whenever anyone is like “ohhhh just wait for the next update! Apple will really wow us next time!” I’m like...pshhhh. What world do you live in.

Although Apple makes a lot of money, it will not do everything for money. Apple will not deliver a product which collides with its beliefs. And it will not deliver sub-par experience. Perhaps Apple feels that a tablet running macOS would bring too many compromises, and Apple is all about uncompromised experience.

It is not about selling right now like hot cakes. It is about selling consistently for the years to come.

Yes.

If you want a tablet running macOS, just wait for some ten years to see if iPad evolves to become a laptop replacement. Maybe it will, maybe it will not.

I think the iPad pro hardware they've just released is the first step - iOS 13 might just be the next. It's meant to be a big overhaul, so that could mean iPad functionality is pushed aside for another year, or it could be that functionality is part of the mooted redesign.

For what it’s worth, I believe iPad will become far more capable in the years to come. But there are things that are trending that apple is picking up on and making decisions about that people won’t like. Like external storage. I really really doubt apple is gonna allow external storage to hook up to an iPad. I think they want to push people into using the cloud even if it doesn’t always make sense.

Like I wanna send a 2gb file. I’m really gonna upload it to the cloud and then send you a link to download it vs just put it on a flash drive? Come on.

iPad will morph and become even more ubiquitous and who knows where we will be a decade from now. The iPad hasn’t even been around for a decade and look where it’s at. Add another 10 years? We might look back on these discussions about iPad being a toy and laugh when it’s all we use

It's a very slow transition but I think Cooks comments about the iPad being the only computer a lot of people need is a big hint on where they will end up. I think that the Mac line will gradually fade away and the iPad will be the future of computing from Apple. Clearly it won't happen over night, but I think that is where we are headed.

Apple has never been in the business of just giving people what they want.

Well, Tim Cook said at least once that the iPad is the only computer he needs most of the time.

I agree that Apple will tend to focus on the iPad as the computer for everyone. I am not sure if it will end up phasing out the Mac in the years to come because of that. But the iPad processors did really had a huge improvement.

I don't think it will happen for many years, but I think as the iPads get more powerful (mainly enhancements to iOS) that Macs will be relegated to niche use by a small number of people for specialized tasks.

Or at least so Apple will desire.

There is of course competition. By the time the iPad becomes more powerful, in the coming years, the Surface (and other convertibles) will also become better, lighter, and faster. So there will be competition.

The iPad was Apple's response to the call for a netbook.

ARM MacBooks in a new form might be Apple's response to a call for a detachable Mac.
