How much do you pay for the monthly service over the 24/30 mos it takes to recover those trade-in credits?

Compared to how much car prices have gone up, it's not that bad in my view. I usually buy the lowest storage devices so that helps with the sting.

I wouldn’t go above $1000 for a phone…
Same here.

However, I would pay that much, for a computer that fits in my pocket and includes a still camera and video camera that eliminates my need to purchase those things separately. Oh yeah, and it makes phone calls. Heck, at $1,500 it would be a bargain. But to each, their own.

most people aren't paying anywhere close to full price. here in the US, the carrier trade-in deals almost make it stupid NOT to trade in. get a brand new phone for $0? (or a couple hundred if you have an older one) why not?
You are paying MORE than the full price. The new phone is NOT free, the price is added to your phone bill and you pay over time. If you think I am incorrect, try to leave the phone carrier with paying the "free" phone off ...

I think people here aren’t getting OP’s point, and instead thinking he/she is asking you to stop buying iPhones, or spending a lot of money. Nope, I don’t think so. I think OP is genuinely curious about what’s the limit of expense on an smartphone for the average people.

However, the answer to this question is pretty heterogeneous, because it will depend on the income, the financing, and other conditions. I think Apple is constantly poking to see how much they can charge for a smartphone, but we should keep in mind that this year Apple hasn’t raised prices on USA, and most of the price increases we’re seeing are due to the currency exchange, especially with the Euro.

I don’t know if Apple could have done something to avoid this ridiculous prices here on Europe -I genuinely don’t-, but I think this new prices that have set the bar above the one thousand mark are going to make many people think twice before upgrading.

Now, for myself, I’m going to answer the question OP is asking: 800, maybe 900€ tops. And that amount itself makes me doubt seriously. I really hope my next iPhone to last many, many years.

The question is incorrect.

I'm not spending $2000 on a phone. I'm willing to spend $2000+ on a pocket computer that I carry with me all day everyday, to do everything from work, entertainment, communications, etc. And since I use these devices for 4-5yrs at a time, it's not much over that span of time.

This! Definitely not “a phone”. It is a pocket mini super computer that does so much!

For “a phone”… I would pay only a couple hundred dollars.

But the value I receive from this device is worthy of the cost. Keep increasing the value I receive and I will consider paying even more.

Still haven’t answered my question. What would happen if that pocket computer rises it price to 2500$ or more? Will you still pay it? At some point you would stop because it is too much. When?

actually the price is added to my phone bill and my CARRIER pays it off over time.

It strikes me seeing people accepting buying a phone (Apple or any other company) for more than 1000€. Now with the new models a Pro 128GB is 1500€, which is absolutely insane. Maybe in 4 years the Pro Max base 256GB will be 2000€, yet still (some) people will buy it.

Doesnt matter if you pay it in 24/36 months. It is just TOO much.

I always wonder if these people who keep buying have 200.000$ per year jobs. Must be rich people, because anyone who is paying gas, electricity, food, rent or whatever surely can’t see this been right.

When will you stop?

Some people seem ok with paying 1.500€ for the 14 Pro Max. So, when will you stop?

I’m willing to spend about 0.5% of my net income, anything beyond than that just seems wasteful.

…and by that logic I would need to be making €1M (€400K net) before spending €2K on a new iPhone every year.

I’m not really there yet, at all.. 😅

Thankfully they tend to last a few years and nowadays you can usually find last years model at a good price.

Around same here: my tops is 900/1000€, even for a foldable. Not paying more for a foldable nor more than 1000€ for ANY phone, and I have the means. To me, it is just TOO much for a phone/smartphone.

That’s the point of this topic as people are willing to pay various amounts for smartphones. I know I can get a feature rich phone for less than $1000 so I would not go above that at the present time.

What’s the monthly bill on a plan that includes a +$1000 phone “for free”?

We can get phones included here as well but that usually takes the monthly bill from like $30 to $100.
So I wouldn’t call it “free”. :)

Freedom………

I pay $20 and get unlimited data but I purchase my phone outright from Apple. His phone contract will be nowhere near that. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Still don’t understand. I’m not offended. I want to know what price is too much for you to decide to stop buying this tech.
It's not a set number. It's about value. Right now, the 14 Pro Max provides enough value by being a pocket computer that can do pretty much everything that I'm willing to spend as much as they're asking for it. (Remember, I don't ski.) They might raise the price next year, and I might decide that the value of the new phone's capabilities aren't worth the price (after trading in my 14 Pro Max), but I doubt it. It's a judgement call in the moment.

It’s definitely not an impuls buy anymore 😉. BTW back in 2007 the original iPhone was $599, which amounts to $866 today when corrected for inflation. The new mid tier iPhone 14 costs $899, so that stayed more or less in the same price bracket.

The pro max however… yikes. $1200 is already a stretch for me. It simply means more years between updates, which is actually healthy for me 😅

”This tech” continues to evolve. More functionality is added. The value proposition continues to grow. Tell me exactly what “this tech” will be 5 years from now? Or ten? Without knowing exactly what value subsequent generations will have, it remains a silly question.

I'm definitely in their target audience for a Pro and can afford it but I don't think I'd pay more than €700-750, it's like a psychological limit. I like having the latest tech but it is what it is. Happy with my 13 that I got for 700 on contract.

I'm not buying a 2-year old model that's going to have about 3 years left of updates since that's how long an equivalent latest Android would be supported but would be 2 years newer and it'd show on a hardware level in other ways. Even if they could convince me it'd last 6 years for €1400 instead of say 3 for €700 I wouldn't spend that much.

There's nothing they can do about EU pricing if they want to keep the same margins as in the US. If you factor in VAT and import taxes and potential currency fluctuations, they might be making less per EU sale than US.

That said, it definitely struck a nerve for people around me who were looking to upgrade, my cousin had an 11 and waited for the 14 to come out, saw the price and I believe got a Pixel, and a friend who had an Xs is planning to buy a flipping samsung (forgot the name). Reasoning being they can't justify going from Xs/11 to 12 for such cost. They're both the 'I'd never switch' type so that's telling me something, people are indeed stopping.

When I'm due for an upgrade it'd depend on the pricing, but I'm not going to be happy with 1019 for the absolute base with enough storage to barely get by.

For the time I spend on my phone and the value it is to me, I still consider it a bargain. Especially when Apple is giving me $720 for a trade, it is a no brained and I am not rich!
