I did like how there were no more page reloads when switching between apps; that used to annoy me.
You and me both. Just ordered the 16GB 12.9 2 TB beast off of CDW - hoping Apple fixes Safari to prevent misbehavior/hangs/tab-reloads to make me better-satisfied with browsing.

Will check out a few reviews later, but it is exactly as we all expected so far...

The OS needs to be updated to fully unleash the power here. The hole is so gaping that every reviewer mentions it. All eyes on WWDC...

From a hardware standpoint the 2018 and 2020 were nearly the same. The 2021 stomps them both. It’s not even close.
Okay yes but not really my point or the reviewers' points. The point is this level of power (whether it be 1x with 2018/2020 or 2x with 2021) is largely under-utilized by iPadOS and the apps it runs.

I'm not complaining because I'd rather have that extra headroom for future capability. But... the iPad hardware has been leagues ahead of the rest of the industry for a few years now and the capability of the software is progressing at a slower rate. People are rightfully hoping for a big leap in iPadOS 15.

Not arguing, but how Does the 2021 stomp the 2018/2020?

I get the excitement of the M1 in the Mac lineup because it completely changes the playing field and introduces a start of new hardware design changes. But with iPads then these chips are just another step in the same direction. So if the iPad has been overpowered and under-served for several generations then what does an M1 iPad do that a 2018/2020 does not?

Just as expected and I'm glad that MKBHD said the same that 2018/2020 models don't have any need to upgrade.
Even he said he will keep his 2018 11".
So, great device for those with previous versions and great to see that Apple is improving. XDR seems to look awesome so hope there won't be any issues.

Now lets see what WWDC brings to us on the software side.

The only difference in the 2018 and 2020 was a tiny CPU bump to the “Z” chip and the LIDAR camera.

The 2020 to 2021 has an M1, 8GB/16GB, twice-as-fast storage, thunderbolt port and the miniLED display.

I was hoping for more of a "wow factor" about the miniLED screen than the reviews suggest - not just in HDR movies, but general use and photos. So basically, my take is that it is an incremental update until the M1 potential is unleashed (the old ipad pro screen was plenty good).

No one will ever use all that power, going off these reviews, mini led is a big disappointment, makes the iPad thicker and heavier, also a gap between the display and glass now, all of these trade offs just for viewing HDR content and max brightness, which most people won’t even do.

oled would‘ve given us a thinner, lighter and better display quality, also wouldn’t be a gap between glass and display.

Mini led is already turning out to be a flawed technology.

It would be wise not to use absolutes… given that it haven‘t reached the masses and over time iPadOS/developers will help users utilized that power.

Hmmm…I think we should give MiniLED a chance, this is still gen 1, did you ever use gen 1 phone OLED? I remember using the Nokia N85 in 2008 and Nokia N8-00 in 2010, it took a quite a bit of time for supply manufacturers like Samsung to get the yields up on that and even so, it would not be until around 2014/2015 where OLEDs were truly amazing in quality.

It seems Apple have done a great job with this I think the next 2 gens will see even more improvements, we need more competition in this area and with Apple leaning harder towards heavy Cotent Creators and Content Consumers on iPad Pro, I think MiniLED is a perfect fitting.

Who is supplying them with the MiniLED panels anyway?

They’re on the way to doing so right now - check out the list of compatible devices for this full version of Divinity Original Sin II - my current iPad Pro 10.5 can’t even download it. And from comments I just saw about it on Reddit it supports 60 FPS and ultra graphics settings on only 2021 iPad Pros.

Woah that is pretty hectic, and it seems the 4GB RAM iPads may struggle in some scenarios as well… sounds like maybe the game still needs a few updates.

In fairness, there was also the 2GB RAM bump for storage capacities under 1TB and the base storage was increased to 128GB which is a decent enough size if Apple decides to implement swap ala-MacOS.

At least 18GB of free space is required to install the full game. Ouch for 2018 64GB.

It's fascinating that the reviews aligned completely with the speculation. Indeed, great hardware that software doesn't really take advantage of is what they're saying.

SUPER cool to see a couple of games already that take advantage of it and, hopefully, more devs follow suit.

I really, really, REALLY hope that developers just start porting Mac apps to the iPad Pro M1 en masse.

Games especially, because this is a compelling little console. I honestly don't even care if they port them over without bothering to implement touch controls and intend for you to use it with a mouse and keyboard or a controller. I mean; why not? There's no shortage of touch based games; so at least having the OPTION of playing desktop games on my iPad (and of course, desktop software) would be stellar.

I have every intention of taking advantage of the Thunderbolt port once it arrives. To import and edit photos and videos on external drives and possibly utilizing an external display as well.

That alone will be using power not present on any other iPad.

It was an observation that Art/Tech reviewer Brad Colbow made, because in regular Art tablets ( even the Surface units ) one disorienting thing about drawing on a tablet is the distance of the glass to the display. So it will feel like you aren't drawing on the actual surface, so there is a further disconnect visually.

Sounds like what I expected, screen is nice for watching content, a lot faster, can keep more apps in memory because of more RAM, battery life is about the same as before. MKBHD said he thought it was brighter even in normal use but I am not sure I believe that, who knows. Glad I have my order for the 12.9” that should ship tomorrow either way.
