There is no reason to upgrade from 2018/2020 models unless you really need the ram (very unlikely as there aren't that many apps to take full advantage).

This model is for those that have older models.

Just like I say with everything. Those that upgrade every generations are irresponsible people who don't know what to do with their money so they throw it at toys/gadget to make themselves feel better.
Until PadOS takes advantage or there will be some Pro apps there is no need to upgrade from those models.

2017 or earlier - thats a different story. I'm personally finally retiring my Air 2 which is very slow and the ram is annoying. Look forward to do more video/photo editing on this iPad too as Air 2 wasn't sufficient.

Pencil is already on my table so now its the iPad thats missing :)

can't wait :)
I upgraded from a 10.5” 2017 *to* a 2020 12.9”. ? It arrived today from Costco.

I haven’t unboxed it yet, though. I’m waiting to see if I’ll be missing something useful to me with a 2021 12.9”. Hopefully the forthcoming reviews will be helpful.

I can afford the 2021, but I had rather not spend more than I need to spend for what will do the light iPad things that I do.

Guys, I think you misunderstood my comment.
The intention was to:

a) point out that 2018/2020 is fast enough and no reason to upgrade from those as we reached the stage where hardware is faster than software

b) people should be more sensible when it comes to cycling things. Our grandparents used products for years and were perfectlly happy whilst our generation is cycling through stuff like there is no tomorrow. Often its social status, often its desire to feel better about ourselves etc. Sure, everyone can spend their money as they please but if someone is wasteful, isn't it ok to say so?
And why is it that if someone says that this upgrade is aimed for those that are on tech that is a bit ancient or not adequate for todays software/apps etc. then I get labelled as jealous etc.? I can afford it and thats why I have one on order.

Did your parents not teach you to be sensible when it comes to spending habbits? Just because I can afford to go to Eleven Madison Park doesn't mean I should. Just because i can afford to buy a car every year doesn't mean that I should. Our buying habits affect everyone. Not just us.

So, is it really bad to imply that this device is not for those that have perfectly fast and amazing device already (2018/2020)?

Anyway, if that falls on deaf ear than I guess there is no reason to say more :)

Pocket Watching on MacRumors? That’s hilarious.

 Spare us your bitter, jealous pronouncements. Then again, don't. They say a lot about you.

What would you say to those who save all year long specifically and only for this one purchase? I just don't get why so many people on forums have to bring down others for how they've decided to spend their money.

Imagine if someone went out to get fast food once a week for an entire year, because that was the one thing they looked forward to, they worked all week for. A $10 dinner.

Now imagine that same person saving that $10 a week instead of eating fast food for the 18 months between iPad Pro releases and spent that same saved money on the new iPad Pro?

Think these things through, please.

I think you are correct that no one *needs* to upgrade to every new year's model.

But I don't see any reason to dunk on those that do. If some people are passionate about technology and have the means to upgrade every year then why is it a problem? People have passions and are allowed to like stuff.

You must be friends with JSMITH1 over on the other thread about why people are buying these expensive machines and putting them down for it. Don’t worry about what other people do and focus on yourself. You’ll live a happier un stressful life if you do that. Not everyone is struggling or making ends meet financially wise. No need to put others down if you find yourself financially broke. Like I said in the other thread……everyone wants the Lamborghini experience on a Camry’s budget. It’s not for everyone.

Says the one getting it themselves. Don’t worry about what people do. Worry about yourself. I myself may get it. Not sure yet.

I know exactly what to do with my money - buy gadgets.

Any place but here or there....
Recently I have stopped watching youtubers. Most of them are misleading, lying tricksters that want your click.
Those thumbnails are insane - everyone is doing the same crap over and over. Its disgusting.
MBK seems to be one of the few professional ones but he is often not that critical. I like him though.

Renne - I used to like him but recently he puts out clickbaits and his thumbnails are awful. Its like he goes to mental hospital and pantomimes patience when taking those pictures. So awful.

So, I will probably wait for MBK and then will read up a little but the times when I watched more youtube is pretty much gone. Same goes for Tesla - its just floods of crap and so little info.

I find forums or good tech sites the most valuable these days.
Agree. I watch Dave2D and Lisa at MobileTechReviews. Dave was always smart using the product as the thumbnail. Lisa lets her funny shirts and non biased knowhow get the clicks.

One of my grandfathers spent his money on gambling (cockfighting). I don't see how that's any better than me indulging in tech.

I expect people have spent money on vices since time immemorial. The only difference over generations is on what.

People buying tech every year often sell on their 1-year old device and this creates conditions for a vibrant second hand market.

Although I'm upgrading to new this year, in the past I've bought used devices that are 1y-18m old, gotten a bargain as a result. But only because the sellers are buying the newest tech and selling their old.

The premium paid by new adopters create the profits that then give companies incentive to drive tech forward. Benefits get paid forward to wider society when used 1/2yo tech becomes affordable and high-end innovations filter down into mass market midrange devices.

Did your parents not teach you to not be rude and condescending? How about not making broad assumptions and insulting?

I recycle everything. I have three EVs (we have five drivers), solar panels and battery storage. When done with iPads, iPhones etc we pass them down to other family members or donate to organizations that supply them to students who can't afford them. Does this pass your test? Am I now allowed to buy the new iPad?

You've missed the point.

Also, I wasn't rude. Sorry you feel that way

Well, the screen will be better but do you think it will make a difference to you apart from lust?

I wouldn't update from 2018/2020 as I don't see the point to go for incremental improvement when software is lagging. I would rather use the device longer and then upgrade when needed. That way I get better jump and more out of the new one.

Most of us lust the shiny new thing but in reality, its just clever marketing.

Anyway, in the end its up to you but I wouldn't do it and honestly I even disagree with such fast consumption.

We can turn to environment conversation but I'm sure most people here wouldn't even get the point as some thing that when they recycle something they did their "part" and its all good. :)

Understand your points but what about better screens? Just asking.

Oh, we get your point. It’s obvious.

So, calling many of the posters here “irresponsible, and only buy expensive gadgets to make themselves feel better” is the beacon of politeness, right?
Are you saying that he isnt right, that this forum isnt infested with people loving consuming new tech every year aimlessly, without second thought just buying new shiny things?
Read the topics, read the comments, see for yourself.
You yourself sound way too overly righteous and triggered given the topic, so how about chill pill before playing "many posters" advocate over here and getting all worked up?

The latter? I assume you are referring to iPadOS 15? That's the biggest question of all... imo. The current iPad Pro 12.9" display is already a great display. I understand people wanna consume content on the XDR Display, as we all know most consider it a consumption device. I'm only concern with what iPadOS 15 features Apple will bring to the 2021 iPad Pros, the XDR Display is just a bonus.

I believe a large percentage of users feel that way, come WWDC if Apple doesn't announce any compelling reason to choose 2021 iPad Pros over 2020 iPad Pros... most will just settle on keeping their 2018/2020 iPad Pros.
Yes, guess I am a minority. Mind you, I’m transitioning from a defectible Windows laptop and AMOLED tablet which suffers from already obsolete internals and system, not iPP 2018/2020. This will be my first iPP and first iPad after 9 years so I’m not in wait for a better OS. It will already be a great upgrade from Android and Windows note taking apps (Office + handwritten note taking apps and markups). For some more comprehensive work I always used PC with multi-monitor setup anyway, I don’t need them big boy apps or Mac OS on couch or with me. I expect XDR will fully replace my Galaxy Tab as an entertainment device too, so I hope it will look comparably (if it won’t be a significant upgrade for Retina, I’ll go for Air).

What’s it to you if people buy technology aimlessly? Are they hurting your wallet? You won’t be able to pay your rent? You like to dictate what other people do with their money? Gtfo….judging other people for what they buy with their money…how pathetic.
Another snowflake just melted, how nice :)

Think about for a moment about world as a whole, not just your locked-in-the-room-bubble, grow up and then tell me, that mindless tech consumption that goes hand in hand with expoiting of natural resources, human resources and toxic waste that kills nature and humans as well, that this all isnt because big tech makes you want to buy shiny new update every year, on an endless cycle.

It's only fitting then that we all throw away our carbon-heavy integrated circuits which consume electricity and instead use devices made from sustainable tree bark and bits of string.

One of my relatives back in Ireland gambled away the substantial family fortune in the 1800s. That's why I have to work to pay for my iPad Pro ?.

I'm kind of disappointed with the display on my iPad pro 12,9" 2020. The only thing I really don't like. Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S7+ with OLED, and was hoping for OLED in this upcoming generation.
