Thanks for the reply. I actually really like my 1st Gen Pro, but, I figured instead of replacing the battery, I might as well upgrade. I'm not at the enthusiast level like you filthy animals though!

:D

Oh I admit it, Apple has me bad, when it comes to buying Apple products I operate with little rational. I appreciate your sticking it out with the first gen for as long as you had, and I mean, why not? It's still an awesome tablet. But yeah, you're going to love the new one for sure. Enjoy it!

This is what’s called a paper launch in the tech industry. No one is getting an XDR iPad Pro till July in any significant numbers. We may get a few Youtubers show off a XDR iPad Pro in a puff piece. In June maybe.

I for one am glad my unit ships in July. I’m on this ice about it and if WWDC does show off BigSur running on the M1 iPad Pro that might be a deal breaker. Because Apple is in full production of the M2 CPU and is on pace to put an M3 in the 2022 iPad Pro.

So yeah its a paper launch and it may end up in our favor because I don’t want an M3 iPad Pro in 11 months after I just bought an M1 iPad Pro.
We are 2 years away from a 3nm chip. The m1 is a 5nm chip so the upgrade in speed from m1 to “m2” is going to be negligible. Kind of like the 2020 iPad Pro over the 2018 iPad Pro. Next year we will see a slightly faster m1x or m2 and micro led across both 12” and 11”. I think apple will stick with micro led for iPads while using Oled for phones simply because screen burn in would be more noticeable on a larger screen like iPad.

Honestly it all comes down to WWDC.

The changes are pretty incremental if there are no new major improvements to iPadOS. Without those improvements it is a minor update compared to last year. New CPU and great screen, but CPU and RAM upgrades are heavily limited by iPadOS limitations. If WWDC adds a lot to the table then you'll see reviewers going wild with videos of the device running iPadOS 15 Beta and showing off the new features that make full use of the hardware advancements. With the potential for it to be a generational leap in iPad capabilities and performance.

So I'd say don't fret the lack of reviews as everyone has their eyes peeled for WWDC...

My device arrives 2 days after WWDC so I will get some time to really decide if the changes were important enough for me to stick to a 1TB model or should I save $400 or so and step down to the 512GB variation. $400 is a lot to shave off on an iPad. That differential could be use to flip a 2021 iPad Pro into a 2022 iPad Pro since values can hold very well. I can make use of the extra 8GB of RAM if I'm able to do development tasks on the iPad, but otherwise I'm not going to be able to fully fill those shoes out.

I believe the Ming rumors that Macbook Pros are going OLED. Because Samsung makes all OLED panels for Laptops no matter the brand. And Samsung has the capacity to offer Apple a no Burn in Gurantee where Samsung will offer Apple no cost replacement OLED panels, just to squash out competition and secure a larger foothold as an OLED panel supplier. In hand Samsung’s 12.4” Tab S7+ with a 120hz OLED display can’t be beat.

As I personally predicted iPhones would go OLED. I know Apple will use OLED from Samsung for either iPads or MacBook Pros. It’s just for Apple Pencil functionality Mini-LED was the best choice.

Recently I have stopped watching youtubers. Most of them are misleading, lying tricksters that want your click.
Those thumbnails are insane - everyone is doing the same crap over and over. Its disgusting.
MBK seems to be one of the few professional ones but he is often not that critical. I like him though.

Renne - I used to like him but recently he puts out clickbaits and his thumbnails are awful. Its like he goes to mental hospital and pantomimes patience when taking those pictures. So awful.

So, I will probably wait for MBK and then will read up a little but the times when I watched more youtube is pretty much gone. Same goes for Tesla - its just floods of crap and so little info.

I find forums or good tech sites the most valuable these days.
Renee Ritchie’s videos are okay, he’s definitely a little drama queen though. The way he conducts himself and those hideous click bait style thumbnails. iJustine is similar. No talent or skills, her claim to fame was a huge AT&T bill from shortly after the iPhone launched in 2007, Apple gives her stuff as long as she sings praise for them.

Other YouTubers do fine with less drama and less bs-ing the viewer in the process.

I have the original iPad Pro. Will I notice improvements with everyday usage? I'm finally upgrading because my battery is giving up the ghost.
No question. I still have my original 2015 iPad Pro, it gets some casual use. I also have a 2018 iPad Pro, and even something like the Pro Motion display (higher refresh rate) will be noticeable in your usage. Outside of that I think you will still notice things being faster and more responsive— it’s a substantial update to go from the original Pro to the 2021— not only from raw horsepower but also just the rest of the hardware— I bet you’ll find the screen looks better, the speakers sound better, and if you use the camera— you may notice that too. USB-C / Thunderbolt also opens some possibilities that weren’t really as practical on the 2015 model w/ its lightning port.

You should post your impressions somewhere of going from the 2015 to the 2021— I’m sure there are others in a similar boat that have been happily plugging along with their 2015 Pros.

I wonder if we will see app compatibility issues…

This is a transition that may have unwanted early side effects.

Should be no issues... the M1 is just a revision of the A12 series, albeit better in every way, it's not new architecture and anything that runs on the A12 will run on the M1, and vice versa (as long as Apple allows support that is).

no, the tansition was between intel x86 to arm M1, and thats why rosetta 2 was/is needed
Here...is nothing new for the ipad...just a more powerful and capable chip that supports thunderbolt, 16gb ram etc

This is very weird launch from Apple. Usually in the past the reviews were out few days before preorder if my memory serves me right but now, we have passed that date and there are still not reviews from anyone.
So, do we really have to wait 2 more weeks before we get any hands on info?
It was a paper launch and the embargo is still in place. The reviews will come, probably the week of the 21st

That may depend on your use case. It will hopefully seem a bit smoother overall but at the end comes down to what the apps you need make of the new device.

The M1 is very close to the previous iPad chips so I’m not sure where you’d expect large issue with incompatibility- that would be uncommon for iPads.

That really is a bad comparison. 2020 and 2018 are the same chip with only one difference (extra core).

You can't compare 2 versions of A12 in this scenario. It would be valid if we had A13X/Z but in this case we don't.

Regardless though, I understand what you are trying to say. M2 will be big difference as Apple is on different pace than Intel was so I guess we get the usual 30+-%?

Kind of like the 2020 iPad Pro over the 2018 iPad Pro.

The problem is that most of the early iPad Pro reviewers aren't even heavy iPad Pro users.

Big Name Reviewers - Free product. Often are rushing a review on a platform that they rarely use.

Aspiring Reviewers - Buy product. Do video. Recommend to buy. Return product. Like and Subscribe.

Apologists - Defend. Excuse. Recommend. Claim Future Proof. Buy again next year.

Personally, I watch early reviews but I trust the message boards more because at least out here then people are spending their own money and are willing to skip a generation if it isn't a big enough upgrade.

People should always skip at least one generation if not more. Those that update every year are just ...... (insert any negative word) :)

Anyway, I watch/read reviews just to get an idea but overall if I want something I'll do the testing myself. Apple's 2 weeks return policy is excellent for that. Prevents wasting money or buyers remorse. You test the device for your specific needs and then you know if its good update or not. Genious strategy from Apple :)

No reviewer is going to convince me to buy or not buy - I’m already in the iPad Pro 12.9” as a daily device camp and have the 2021 version on order. But I do like to read and see reviewers comments on products, even when it’s not as relevant to my own use case or needs. I’m super curious to know how the new XDR screen looks and performs, not to mention the M1 and what benefits it brings to the iPad. I’m excited to get it, and typically try to learn as much as I can about any new product prior to receiving it myself, which is why I’d love to start watching video reviews, sooner than later.

I watch the reviews for 2 reasons. I want to see the comparison with the previous generation, and seeking more general information.

After purchase, I always like to see new ideas on creative ways I may find to use the product I’ve purchased that I may not know.

There isn't really much to review. It's the same iPad for three years now (same screen on 11", slightly better but thicker/heavier on 12.9", 5G instead of 4G (what is there to 'review'?) and oh the A14X now dubbed M1 instead of the A12X. Bit faster, bit more RAM.

What did you mean by it? I've watched 27mins and then switched it off. So much talk and so little substance.
In support of Rene’s channel which I have been following from the beginning, he’s not really a product reviewer, per se. At least not like many of his peers on YouTube. He focuses more on technologies in general and big picture decision making by Apple and others and how that effects products, consumers, etc. If you want to get a sense for why Apple may make certain decisions about product, Rene is great for that.

Oh, the irony.
Hate it or love it.

He's growing at a crazy pace.

I agree his thumbnails can be awful. I've been familiar with Rene since his days at iMore... I think he was worst back then, he was heavily biased toward Apple products. Although, he favors Apple... but he attempts to be objective at times. But as @jmgregory1 points out... he does provides some solid information.

Yeah, I get that. In fact it was the reason why I started to watch his videos but lately its all bloody clickbaits.
Just look at the mental hospital thumbnails. Hold on, let me get some examples:

'Wrong about chip shortaged'
'ARMv9 Future of Apple Silicon'
'iPhone 13/14/15/SE3 Mega Leak Bombs'
etc.

Not to mentioned that in all those 'leak bombs' videos there isn't really anything to support such claim.

Definitely not 'bombs/mega/huge etc.' label - those are all click baits.

Maybe I'm old school but to me the last valid "leak bomb" that actually deserved the label was the iPhone 4 fiasco from Gizmodo. That was valid.

Shame that we now need to use these labels for average to subaverage info in order to get baited.

Sad reality
