I agree with you that what we will see is that OS X will get more iOS-like or maybe at one point there will only be iOS (or whatever it will be called then).

That day is fast approaching, with Lion being the last of the big cats, unless they're the next version of OS X will be called "Ernie Ladd" (old time wrasslin' fans know what I'm talking about).

Back on topic, I'm not a big fan of iOS, it's too limiting. OS X, while the GUI is limited, gave you access to its guts in terminal. It'll be a sad, sad day when :apple: kills OS X.:(

For a period of time in 2010, it appeared all iOS.

But lately, and I mean very recently, I tend to think that Apple is going to go in whatever direction the money goes.

Apple is a money addict

And the ones that are cutting corners, churning out junk and pushing sheer volume (i.e., Acer) are not? It rather seems the competition are the ones that are money addicts, while Apple takes their time to concentrate on a few key areas and take their time to get it right, too. Apple often takes huge risks (i.e., iPad) amid a sea of criticism until they're proven right by consumers.

Apple makes their dollar on the strength of their products. Of course there's money to be made when you make desirable products that consumers love. This goes without saying. Just be sure to make that key distinction: one way to money is commoditizing your product, licensing it out to everyone and/or becoming one of this licensees. The other way is actually giving a sweet **** about what you put your name to.

Apple is a money addict, and that falls in line neatly with those who's self esteem is bolstered by "being seen" with cool stuff.

More often than not in the USA especially, it's a shallow environment where toys matter more than family... Sad but true.

Yes! Yes! Apple is a money addict. And Microsoft and Google are altruistic charitable foundations. Hah!

OS X to be relegated to one of those historical curiosities while people who want a real OS will buy Windows 8.

So you admit that tablets are very limited machines, at least at the moment? You are only speculating that Apple will be able to solve the input issue of tablets but you can't even offer a solution. Until that happens, tablets will be very limited machines with very limited use.

Don't get too hung up on tablets. What I see is iOS taking over and the traditional desktop PC (including the Mac) withering away. Laptops and desktops of the 5 year future will be supersized iOS devices with 30" screens and keyboards and we'll all be running over-simplified iOS apps on some very similar descendant of the A5 processor. The traditional PC as we know it will be all but dead.

Don't just think about the tablet form factor. Just as thinking of the phone form factor wouldn't have helped you on the iPad, thinking of the tablet form factor won't help you conceptualize the next steps up -- laptops and desktops.

Read all of my posts before replying:

Yeah, well Apple solved that issue much before we even imagined about tablets then :p I agree with you that what we will see is that OS X will get more iOS-like or maybe at one point there will only be iOS (or whatever it will be called then). What I was asking is that why does *LTD* think that tablets will replace traditional computers, especially when we consider the shortcomings of tablets.

I was only arguing about the tablet form factor as at one point, *LTD* was suggesting that it will replace all traditional laptop and desktop form factors. A desktop with iOS is still a desktop, not a tablet. I can certainly see iOS and alike OSs taking over traditional OSs but that doesn't mean that the form factors will change dramatically.
