I got the Starlight 64GB on Sep 14th and then canceled it and on the 16th got the 256GB Starlight instead. Why? Well I have a 256GB iPad Air (2020) which I'm also keeping and if I want to restore the new mini 6 with the Air backup, I would need the same capacity in the mini 6 to do it, so even that I don't need the extra memory, still I got the 256GB so I can have both with the same exact content.

Probably a launch bump but if 256 demand continues they may add 512 next time

They should! I for one would have paid up THIS time for 512GB and probably 1TB onboard. Apple premium seems very real but with years of every-day usage, that flexibility would be worth it (to me). Since I'm accustomed to the 128GB limit of the existing Mini, 256GB seems abundant TODAY... but I do find myself regularly making decisions about what to sync and what to jettison (to free space for something else). It would be nice to not really have to think much about that going forward (for years)... without having to lean on Cloud options.

1TB might have been a stretch, but personally, I expected a 512GB version, and was disappointed there was none. Even the iPhone 13 has 1TB now, and that's just s phone.

Yes, I think of it as an "everything" device. I even use it as my "phone" (with buds). So more storage would mean it can double as a portable hard drive if I need to transport a bunch of files somewhere... instead of carrying along that kind of extra weight to be ONLY portable storage.

From a pure iPad usage standpoint, I've got by great for many years with 128GB. So 256GB is much overkill for my own purposes. But I also carry along a portable hard drive on most trips. So if that spare space was in there, it becomes one less thing in the bag.

With a 2.35:1 movie on the Mini's 3:2 display, you will have substantial black bars still (my Surface pro 7 is 3:2). Looking at the same 2.35:1 video side by side with with my SP7 and 2021 12.9 iPP, it's a difference, but not a big one.

4,6:3 is the aspect ratio of new mini 6. So 3,066:2, maybe noticeable difference with 3:2…

I did this to calculate the 1.85.1 and 2.39.1 ratio hopefully correctly on Mini 6:

There was a discussion on Reddit about this subject recently, where you could see how to measure these things.
I wouldn't know how to do this for iPad 11" though since it has a different ppi than Mini 6.

Edit: I became unsure so here's the data:

Blue: iPad Mini 6 |2266*1488|
Red: 1.85 Aspect Ratio |2266*1225|
Green: iPad Mini 6 |2266*1488|
Yellow: 2.39 Aspect Ratio |2266*948|

Edit 2: So I can't compare Mini 6 and 11" directly since the ppi gets wrong, but here's the 11" with different aspect ratios:

Data for double checking:
iPad 11" |2388*1668|
1.85 Aspect Ratio |2388*1291|
iPad 11" |2388×1668mm|
2.39 Aspect Ratio |2388*999|

Thx. Nice job. So when comparing black bezels within the display you get the best out of any iPad with widescreen movies/shows/videos from the Mini 6. That also means it has the widest display ratio of any iPad.

Now if only here would be a graphic comparing real size 16:9 video of Mini 5 vs Mini 6. Like the graphic on reddit comparing the display size of Mini 5 vs Mini 6. But difference of 16:9 video will be huge with the bigger display and new display ratio of the Mini 6.

The mini is a great device for musicians especially. It's more like the size of an instrument now. I imagine a lot of creative fields will find getting the 256GB as a worthwhile upgrade. Super excited to get mine.

Do you mean it’s great for music sheet apps or what particular instrument did you have in mind?

Specifically for MIDI apps that mimic the size of an actual instrument (Midi Keyboards, knobs etc.) with certain instruments like teenage engineering products for pairing (Apple page highlighted the OP-Z on their offical website with iPad mini advertisement). And I imagine writing lyrics would be a killer utility on the mini.
