Over the years I keep switching between the 11" iPad Pro and the 12.9 and each time I always miss the one I don't have! I currently have the 11" 2020 iPad Pro but now, with the new one's due to be announced I'm thinking of the 12.9. I can't really say I've noticed a great difference between the two when using but the 11 is obviously easier to hold and is more portable. That said, the 12.9 is a lovely size when not moving around. Just wondering what others are intending to do this year? Anyone else keep moving between the two sizes? Any thoughts?

I remain confused and undecided. I had a 2020 12.9 and hardly ever used it. I also found it difficult to read things. B/C if my vision, I view my mobile devices rather closely. I constantly found myself having to move my head to read. Four weeks ago, I got the IPP 11, many things are much easier fir me, but I miss the larger text.

THERE IS NO PERFECT SOLUTION.

If the new IPP only has a faster processor and no mLED, then I may skip an upgrade, as my IPP 11 is only a month old.

Still unsure about how best to use the IPP 11 in bed. Should I detach it from the Magic Keyboard? Use it naked, or use my Apple Folio when in bed?

I tend to use it on the Magic Keyboard when in bed and "naked" when on the sofa.

I've been thinking of the WiFi only/Cellular options. There's very little instances where you cannot get WiFi these days, I usually buy Cellular "just in case" but don't think I've ever used it? Obviously I have WiFi at home, and (when) in the office there's WiFi. When travelling there's WiFi in hotels and for the occasion (that I can't think of?) when there isn't any Wifi you can always tether to your iPhone? Can't think of any reason for the Cellular?.... Anyone actually use their cellular?

I'm going to have to see what the new one does before I can make that call!

If the screen improvement and processor upgrade are the two main sellers, I'll probably wait. I have a 2020 11, and I don't think it's any better than my 2018 12.9.

I'm really curious about the rumors of extended monitor support. That would intrigue me.

I have two cellular iPads on the $35/month AT&T prepaid plans. I use cellular frequently, at least every couple of weeks when traveling to and from our camp and while at our camp. We don’t have electricity there, so definitely no wifi. Sometimes we make a day trip on Saturday, sometimes we spend the weekend, and sometimes we spend a week or two. My phone is Android/Verizon and we have better AT&T signal at the camp than Verizon signal. We also have a small data plan (2G, plus 2 bonus G each month) so hot spotting is not a good option for me.

I use the cellular mini for navigation when traveling and it comes in handy when there are problems on the travel route. Apple maps notifies me, my Garmin GPS does not. Oh, and we can stream our favorite radio station, too. We travel in various older vehicles so satellite radio isn’t an option for us.

I’m in the deep South so storms and the resulting power outages are somewhat common. Cellular iPads come in really handy then.

Sometimes when I’m grocery shopping, I want to look something up or find it in the store. Having cellular means I don’t have to use the store’s wifi and I find the Mini 5’s screen much easier to read than my phone’s screen.

I’ve attended trade shows where the trade show wifi was slow as molasses. Cellular iPads meant I was able to be online when I needed to be without dealing with slow wifi.

I can understand why a lot of people neither want nor need cellular but I’d be hard pressed to give it up and I plan to keep two cellular iPads (one small, one larger) for the foreseeable future. I’m glad cellular is an option.

Depending on what the new 2021 iPad Pro looks like/the specs, I will probably upgrade from my 2017 10.5 Pro. My 10.5 Pro is more than fast enough still and works perfectly, but I'm thinking about just trimming down to one computing device and iOS is finally at the point where it's bearable as a main system besides lacking some programs imo. Will go for the bigger 12.9 (or whatever is available) screen size though. Smaller is better for media consumption, but to do anything on it productive is kind of a drag with so little room.

12.9 is priority this year. I often use the 2017 12.9 docked at the office ever since mouse support was introduced and having to reach up for TouchID has gotten quite inconvenient.

I use the smaller iPads on the go and masks make FaceID much less convenient for that so I might stick to the Air 3 for the moment.

Hmm, maybe I'll get 2021 12.9 + Air 4.

12.9 WiFi Silver 256 or 512 (depending on which is at the $1099 price point).

I’m basically going to use it as an on-the-go replacement for my MBP for 90% of everything I do. I plan on eventually getting the Magic Keyboard as well. It’s not gonna completely replace it yet… at least until Final Cut comes out on iOS. Plus, most of my editing is done on my M1 mini so if I’m going out I’ll transfer the library to a USB-C SSD and edit from there.

I have a 2018 11" and sold my 12.9" 2020 yesterday to upgrade to the new one coming out. Even though I had both, I couldn't really choose one over the other. They do different things well. The 11" is obviously really light and easy to hold, carry etc. Perfect for anything handheld. The 12.9" was my go-to for anything productivity. I did use it handheld, but it's far better on a stand of some sort. It does split screen so much better and displays more on websites.

I'll replace at least the 12.9 with the new 12.9 for now, keeping the 11" 2018 around, unless I see a compelling upgrade in the 2021 11".

Storage wise, if they introduce pro apps I might go with 512 or 1tb, otherwise base storage. They might intro the pro apps at WWDC which would kinda suck.

I keep an online diary and have just read this from 5 years ago;

"Pad 9.7 vs 12.9

I am finding those incredibly had to choose. Which Pro to keep."

Can't believe I was trying to decide this 5 years ago!!

If in doubt, get both, even if it’s just for testing them side by side.

I feel like that this has been recently discussed in another thread in detail. Check the board. The use cases for cellular haven’t changed much in the last decade.

I used to use cellular on iPads back when 3G was the fastest data connection and I traveled. Tethering then was expensive and not very effective. Even though I could easily tether now I still got a 2020 cellular iPad just in case there is some weird power outage situation or traveling abroad. Maybe I’ll be at cabin where there isn’t good data coverage with Verizon on my iPhone but there is on another carrier I can activate on my iPad.

Cellular to me isn't the best option in Canada. We have the most expensive data in the world, and cellular iPads are a $200 premium; a fun combo. For me, an iPad data plan would have to be truly unlimited because I manage my business from my iPad.

After vaccination though I'm going to go travel, mostly the US I'm thinking, so maybe a cellular iPad might be good for there.

I still have my 2018 1TB 12.9". It's still a beast. I'll have to wait and see. Last year, I bough the Magic Keyboard since it was compatible with the 3rd Gen. If the new Keyboard works with 3rd Gen, then I will continue to keep my 2018 and buy the 2nd Gen Magic Keyboard.

If not, I will trade in my 2018.

Likely the 12.9 WiFi or I might pick up a 2020 model on the cheap from someone desperate to grab the current model.

Can’t decide. ??‍♂️
