What’s the big deal with the led screens this year? What are the current screens?

Just returned my 2020 11” IPP to Costco today, eagerly waiting for the new version. I will certainly go for a 12.9” this time, but I’ve been reading that could be out later than the 11” and in limited quality initially (meaning even longer wait time). How many of you will wait it out instead of ordering the 11” model?

I am wondering if the new IPP 11 will be enough of an upgrade, to replace my 2020 IPP 11?

yeah same boat here. I absolutely love the 2020 11” IPP I just returned. But I feel I have to do it because new one is around the corner and I’m still within the return window. If I can’t wait for the 12.9” then Most likely I will get the 11” cellular model with 5G.

@kevjen888 I have no desire for the 12.9. It is too unwieldy for me. The question is whether the new IPP 11, will be enough of an upgrade.

I'd love the 12.9 but I do think the 11" is the best choice (for me). I think if you are going to use an iPad as a productivity device then the 12.9 is the way to go. I use my 11" iPad 90% of the time for web browsing and am perfectly happy with it. One thing I am considering that does question my reasoning is my eyesight. As I get older (57) the eyesight deteriorates and I wonder if the 12.9 a better choice even though it is a heavier (and more expensive) device?

I always go back and forth on which one to get. I like the idea of the new screen tech in the 12.9”, but every time I’ve gotten one (twice), I ended up returning it as it feels too large to use undocked, which is my preferred use case.

However, I will probably try it out first just so I won’t feel like I’m missing out if I get the 11” WiFi straight away.

It’s going to depend on what the specs are and how much better the new 11” is than my 2018 iPP 11. My current iPP is just fine, although I just got a small worn hole in the fabric covering the space bar of the ASK. I won’t decide until I know what’s available. I could go for both a new iPP 11 (cellular) and a Mini 6 (cellular), one of those, or neither.

@AVBeatMan

The point you raise about your vision and iPad size is more complex than it seems at first glance, at least for me.

I found that it depends on how far from my face that I hold the iPad. I am fairly myopic and hold the device, closer than most do. Fir me, when I used the larger iPad, I fond i had to move my face from side to side or up and down, to see everything. For me, portrait was worse than landscape. Given this, the 11 suited me more than the 12.9. YMMV.

I sold my 2018 iPP 12.9 last month to get a 11”. I liked my 12.9” but it felt too big. It will be a pity if only the new 12.9” gets the Miki-LED screen.

Mini LED allows for local dimming so you have more contrast (incl deeper blacks,...) and higher brightness which is good outdoors

Personally will see after the event.
And I will probably wait until after WWDC to upgrade. I have a 2020 11” iPad Pro and don’t really have to upgrade but I do love the iPad. It’s my main device at home and unlike my other apple devices will update it more regularly.
(Normally not every year though)

I'm coming from a 12.9" 2017 iPad Pro, I will be upgrading to a 12.9" iPad Pro. If Apple also update the Apple Pencil I will be ordering one.

Mini-LED and the new processor are what will do it for me, alongside the design.

Vegas, baby!
I have an iPad 5th generation. It works ok, but kinda slow at times. I tried the new iPad air 4 for 10 days and it just wasn't the upgrade I had hoped for. Not noticably faster for what I use it for. Better, bigger screen, but operationally, not so much, so I returned it. I have hopes for the new 11" pro. Gonna give that a go and hope it is snappier. Also going for the cellular version as TMobile just turned on 5g in my area.

Any place but here or there....
I need a lighter weight iPad to replace my increasingly flakey 7th gen iPad, hoping for a redesigned Mini that will use the 2nd gen pencil.

I’d consider an iPad Pro if the ongoing touch problems were fixed, but I’ll pass. Had the 2020 11” cellular for a little while as I thought I could use it for work (No). My needs are a little beyond the base iPad, but I want something with 2020 Air specs that is lighter in weight.

I usually just buy WiFi models now.

As a few others have posted, Wifi+Cellular only makes sense if you will use it. For us, we live in Southeast Palm Beach County, deal with hurricanes and thunderstorms frequently so having the ability to connect via cell has proven to be quite useful. I’d add - our Internet Provider (Xfinitiy/Comcast) is extraordinarily unreliable and cannot tell you how many times a day they drop out for periods of 1 or 2 hours while I am on work calls. Simply switching to cell and continuing to function has been a lifesaver more than I can count.

Never mind traveling, security concerns about some public wifi, etc. Have had Cell since the very first iPad with ATT Unlimited Data and have used it through an iPad Mini, then my current 2020 11” Pro. I’m getting the 12.9 Wifi+Cell and my wife gets the 11” - she has stopped using our iMac for bills, browsing, creation, etc. and borrows the iPad Pro. She is an artist and the pencil has been a delight. So the 11” goes to her and I will get the 12.9 as these old eyes want the bigger screen ... and I actually do multitask and the bigger real estate will work.

My biggest wish is actually an iPad OS addition and an old one...one multiple profiles/login for iPad. This way my wife and I could switch between devices as needed...i.e. when riding my bike to the beach for a business meeting, I prefer the smaller 11”. Doubt will see that so need to buy a slightly larger sling bag for the 12.9” now.

As for 2020 vs. 2021...honestly there is no single feature that I think is a huge compelling difference that would drive anyone to buy a 2021. As a group of features, the 2021 future proofs the device and as a matter of practice, I always get the latest at time of purchase and have never regretted. If they store the Apple Pencil in the new keyboard that will be a big win ;) small I know but one I would definitely appreciate.

Not enough info really. I'm just going to have to be flexible. I'm wondering if further leaks will give us some guidance tomorrow. If not, it's going to quick decision making.

Here
(sigh) If it wasn't for the rumors of miniLED I wouldn't have the slightly doubt and, quite honestly, even with those rumors I think I know what I'll get.

  • 11" iPad Pro Silver (512 GB) - Wifi + Cellular -  Penci + Magic Keyboard (redeeming from my job's "appreciation" store, so not real cost to me)
I want a really good tablet that can function as a laptop when needed, not a laptop replacement that can also be a tablet. I don't mind smaller screen iOS devices (the opposite stance from Macs) so I think I'll be getting the smaller one to replace my 10.5" screen. It appears the the consensus from some light research and tech podcast is that miniLED will indeed improvement contrast and color, but it won't be a day and night upgrade from the already good quality LEDs Apple uses (so not like the jump to Retina or 120hz). I would sure pay for the miniLED option, but I think I'm okay without it.

I was all set to upgrade last year as my 10.5" battery is dying and it has a slightly messed up display, but couldn't bring myself to pay for the A12Z. Also, going with cellular this time. Overall it's likely not a smart investment, but I hate tethering and killing two batteries.

The 12.9 model with cellular.
Using it mostly at my desk and my internet isn't reliable at night so cellular it is.

Not surprised about cellular models being less popular. Most people are fine without it. I got the cellular version because I wanted to use it without worrying about if I had a Wifi signal and I currently don’t have hot spot on my phone’s cellular plan. Plus I didn’t want to have to hotspot anyway. I say it’s worth it if the extra cost of the device + a cellular plan are in your budget. But again, most people should/will just get the Wifi versions.

Size/WiFi/ Cellular. What about storage? I always get 256GB but as I look at my current 11" I've only used 71GB of that. Looks like I could get away easily with 128GB?

@AVBeatMan Which size did you decide on?

Regarding storage, I think that might depend on how long, you plan on keeping the iPad. If you plan on changing every cycle than 128GB might be fine. If you plan on keeping the device for several years, or plan on using it differently, then you might be wise to stick with 256GB.

Just got a 2020 12.9" Pro 2 months ago. Upgrading was already unlikely, but now hearing about the "modest" price increases, it's definitely not happening.
