Just got a 2020 12.9" Pro 2 months ago. Upgrading was already unlikely, but now hearing about the "modest" price increases, it's definitely not happening.
The same report also told us we’d get a ‘preview’ of AirPods 3 and a new entry-level iPad… which was just refreshed 6 months ago. I wouldn’t let that report hold water. They have no idea what they’re talking about and are just analysts.

I will buy the 12,9" with the new screen technology mini led or was it micro led. Having the 12,9" pro today, it's just the screen that I'm not that pleased with. Coming from a Galaxy Tab S7+ (OLED) anything but OLED has to this point been a disappointment. If the upcoming iPad pro will be in pair with any OLED tablet on the market I will be completely satisfied :)

@AVBeatMan Which size did you decide on?

Regarding storage, I think that might depend on how long, you plan on keeping the iPad. If you plan on changing every cycle than 128GB might be fine. If you plan on keeping the device for several years, or plan on using it differently, then you might be wise to stick with 256GB.
I currently have the 2020 11" 256GB. Was intending on getting the 2021 12.9 256GB WiFi and Cellular but in reality 128GB and WiFi only would probably be best for me. Still undecided?....

Try out Swappa

I checked out swappa now..and seeing some of the prices that I saw offered no way is anyone going to pay..1000 bucks for the 2018 ipad pro 256gb wifi, yeah good luck with that LOL..I always fear selling ipads to people online because with the 30 day warranty they have when they purchase, they can always say "Oh it doesnt work" even though it works perfectly fine..so Id rather lose a little than worry about that..before Id just sell to people in person, they take it, pay me and its over with..but with the virus and all thats not gonna happen so it is what it is

I agree. But I wouldn’t doubt Apple on a potential price increase… especially with a new display technology. And in comparison with 2018 iPP and 2020 iPP, I would argue that this upcoming iPP will be a much substantial upgrade over the 2020 iPP. I have the 2018 iPP and when Apple announced the 2020 iPP, I didn’t even consider upgrading to it due to the minimal difference between my 2018 iPP.

I definitely plan on upgrading regardless of a price increase and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Apple do so. Going with the 12.9” cellular model… just undecided on the storage.

I bought a 12.9 back in November. I'm still using my 2018 basic iPad but the battery life is starting to dwindle rapidly. I would love it if they'd ditch the button like the Pros on the new basic iPads (and go to USB-C like the Pros) and I'd sell or trade the one I have for a new basic. The one I have is a 128 but with my Pro, I could easily get by with a 64 on the basic. The funny thing is that I use my Pro for church to play percussion so I have that music up all the time. I'd like another iPad up for the vocal parts when I have "rests" (I have a lot of them) or fairly simple parts I can sing while playing. My wife won't let me use her Air for that purpose!

Correct me if I’m wrong but there wasn’t a price increase from the 2017 to the 2018 models, which was a significant jump in performance, features and design.

There was a significant price jump from 2017 to 2018. 150 USD for the 11” from 10.5” and 200 USD for the 12.9

I’ll probably get the 2020 Air because it is cheaper and the pro is too expensive. I know it’s completely unrelated but I think the Air is one of the best, providing more for your money.

$200 price increase from 2017 to 2018 12.9. I think it was $150 for the smaller model.

And that's not including the need to change peripherals such as cases, keyboards and pencils which is why some of us just stuck things out with the 2017's.

You're both right. I didn't even consider upgrading my 2017 at the time so I hadn't really compared the prices. There was a price drop in 2020, at least with the 12.9" model, $50 for 256-1TB and 128GB became the standard over 64GB. I wonder if we may see a return to that price, but even then I highly doubt it. I think prices will remain the same. Apple loves being able to tout that you're getting 'all these great new features' at the same price point as last year's model. I guess we'll see tomorrow.

What do you mean? Analysts are not stupid by any means.
Not stupid, they are very smart when it comes to predicting sales and numbers. However, after searching both of the analyst's names I could not find any previous rumors they have commented on before, other than sales figures. As I have said elsewhere, Apple does not shoot itself in the foot by announcing product upgrades this far ahead. Unless AirPods 3 are ready to ship - which even this research note says they won't until June - I do not see them dropping an AirPods announcement tomorrow.

Additionally, the iPad 8th Gen just came out in September. That is not a model Apple has ever bothered upgrading more than once per year. The last time it was updated in March was in 2018. That is because it had not been updated since March 2017, and after March 2018 it did not see another update until September 2019. If Apple were to change back to a March timeframe on the entry-level iPad I would expect they would do it in March 2022, a year and a half after releasing the current model, not a mere 7 months later. Hell, Apple's website still has the 'New' banner above the 8th Generation iPad on the website.

The reason I make these points is because it would be uncharacteristic of Apple to pull either of these stunts. The production line for 8th Gen iPads is at critical mass right now and it would make little sense to retool the whole thing, especially after we found out that they even went the extra mile of replacing the SSC in the A12, basically for the sole purpose of the 8th Gen iPad. And if this note is wrong on 2/3 of their main points, what're the odds they'll be wrong on the other 1/3? Not to say that a price increase isn't coming, but I would not read much into this note. Unlike supply chain leaks, these are much harder to pinpoint since Apple has always kept the pricing of new devices close to the vest until the actual keynote. That always seems to be the one thing that doesn't leak, because it's the one thing they don't contract out. That and marketing.

I’ve always had the 10.5\11 size pro each revision, even though I’ve always been intrigued by the 12.9, I just thought it was too unwieldy for my purposes and I have a 13” laptop already. If the miniLED screen is only on the 12.9 as rumored then i might go for the bigger size if I can find a decent dash mount for it

Ummm.. i have roughly 40gbs left on my 256gb iPP. Some items I can remove.. so I can easily get by with a 128gb model. Just depends on what's available when the time comes. I was desperate to upgrade back in 2017 that I purchased the 512gb model... it was overkill for me.

But I sold off my 1st generation iPP and I picked the one that became available at the time. Hopefully, I won't have to buy a TB model. But I know those 128gb cellular models going to go quick.

I’ve been so torn on deciding for the past 2-3 weeks...I’m able to get either one for free thru work so price isn’t an issue. Think I’m gonna go with the 12.9 with magic keyboard and mini-led since it seems to be the one that’s getting the most upgrades. *unless apple surprises us tomorrow*

and really I’ll mostly just be using it laying around the house in bed and on a couch generally with the keyboard on there.

but I’m worried it’ll be way to big if I ever decide to use it as an actual tablet. Decisions decisions...

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro that still runs fine for the most part, but wanted to get something fresh. I think the 12.9 would be good until I can get the new 16” redesigned MacBook Pro.

I thought the same thing but I tried the 2020 Air and returned mine today. For $200 more, you do get quite a bit more features. Not sure what they are presenting tomorrow, but the 2020 11" pro wifi has 6 gb ram, 128 gb storage, pro motion, better camera, face ID... At the very least, tomorrow will also bring a faster processor than the Air 4. I plan on preordering one ASAP. Air was nice device but for a device I only upgrade every 4 years or so, I'll take the top of the line. I heard a rumor pre orders may start as early as tomorrrow.

Last thoughts for today. Going to get the 12.9 and compare to my current 11. I’ll just see how I get on with the larger size. Bigger is always better if you can “live” with it I guess?

For me it’s all depending on the wait time for the 12.9”. If I have to wait couple more months to get my hands on one, then I’ll go with the 11”

It sounds like the 12.9 will be in short supply so my thought is get the 12.9 which I intend to keep but if it’s too unwieldy I’ll return it and buy the supposedly more readily available 11”.

Have you went inside a store just to get a grasp of the weight difference? I'm sure it's not the best of times now, but throughout these forums... weight was always a deciding factor going back to the 12.9" model. And one thing to note.. the new display technology supposedly will add more weight to 12.9" model.

Many felt the screen size wasn't really necessary when convenience was more important. I've been fortunate enough to have own the 12.9" model for quite awhile.. that I'm accustomed to the size. I find no issue with portability. I tend to use SlideOver quite a bit... Split View when doing drag and drop. So, I enjoy the extra screen real estate... however, some value the more portable 11" inch model.

I always thought the 12.9 was just too big. I’m not able to go into the store right now but I’ve held them before. I always stuck with the 9.7-11” models because the 12.9 seemed too big and unwieldy. Weight was never a concern because I’m almost always wresting my iPad on something but it’s more ‘how far away do I need to hold it from my face in order to see the whole thing’.

Going for 12.9 wifi only model. The only question will be the storage option to go with 128/256 GB storage.

Coming from iPad-Air, 5 years old model, looking forward to get this one along with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil.
