Sorry if this has already been covered, I have read through most of the posts about this subject, but I just want to make sure I have this correct. The following brands of 6800/6900 cards will fit inside and function with the 2019 Mac Pro:

AMD Reference model
Gigabyte Gaming OC (as mentioned above)
Sonnet

More specifically, I'm interested in a 6900XT at a relatively decent price.

To my knowledge, the AMD reference models are not regularly discounted on their website, Sonnet just removed the 6900 from their own website, and the Gigabyte model hasn't been on sale for ~$700US in about a month. (You can currently get them from MSI for that price, but I don't believe they will fit within the Mac Pro case.)

So, if I'm missing any brands, other options, or you good folks have any general advice, it would be much appreciated. I'd prefer to avoid the used market, for obvious reasons. I could settle for a 6800, but would like to exhaust all options for a 6900 first.

The problem is all the stock is being depleted to make way for RDNA 3 release 7800xt 7900xt in the next few months. If Apple even supports the new RDNA 3 cards in ventura when it releases. That would be the way to go, but if you want the 6900xt the above models you have named will fit the 2019 Mac pro.

I dont know of any others that do fit sorry to say, much like the new 7000 series we dont know if they will even fit if supported by apple. Hard to say at this point as they will blow the M2 chips away and perhaps apple would not want that when they are heading towards the M chips for all Mac's even a supposed M chip based Mac pro.

It does seem that AMD is clearing out old inventory, meanwhile Apple appears to be moving on from PC suppliers. Both companies are in a transition period, and so the market is in a state of tumult.

Thank you @Matty_TypeR! That's what I needed to know, much appreciated.

I have a question. I have a Mac Pro 2019 with an AMD Radeon Pro W5700X in it attached to a XDR monitor. I ordered an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT and want to add this card into my mac pro. Which cables do i need to get it to work?

And will the usb-c output work on my XDR so i can disable the W5700X?

I have mine connected via USB-C but thats to a mateview screen, also i would remove the W5700X and just use the 6900xt if you dual boot windows it will install 2 sets of drivers and you cant update to the latest ones with the W5700X installed at the same time.

Thank you. But i want to know if just only the 6900xt can manage my XDR monitor on its own. Because this sir on reddit claims it cannot. And that would kinda suck :)

And do you also know which cables i need?

I always buy Bi directional cables, you can purchase via Amazon.

A Bi directional cable will work but you will lose the brightness controls and the USB ports on the back of the monitor. Check out my Post #23 on the preceding page.

Hi Lou,

Thank you. So you are saying that when i order this cable i can connect my XDR monitor to my 6900xt card in my mac pro 2019 so i can remove my AMD Radeon Pro W5700X and still keep all my settings?

Looks like the max resolution is "3K 90Hz resolution" per the spec page. Can you confirm this cable can run 6K @ 60Hz for the XDR with no issues?

^^^^I'm running 4K @ 60Hz at 4096 x 2304.

Thanks for confirmation. I don’t think this cable is “officially” certified to run at full XDR resolution. Which is why I left the Vega II in there to connect to the XDR and the RX 6900 XT to power the Asus 32”.

Can somebody tell me which cables i exactly need to power the 6900xt in my mac pro? 8 to 8 pin? 6 to 8?

Hope someone can help me. I ordered the Belkin kit, but the sender shipped it to a wrong address and right now he is pissing me off. So i want to order the exact cables alone.

Nice yeah try to get a refund for the previous one if you cant wait and also @flowrider posted a great alternative.

All you guys who are getting the 6900xt right now are getting a steal I had to pay $1600 during the inflated prices haha but it was totally worth it especially now with dual Studio Displays

I'm never getting rid of my 7,1 :D
I got it for a steal too.

Yeah, paid $700 for mine last week. Paid enough for my maxed out 7,1 :)

Nice I see them for $630 now, non OEM. Probably can find a used mint condition one for way under that too. It's such a great card, I can play CoD MW2 at 5k @ 60fps maxed out with FSR 1.0 (2.0 is supposed to be much better) on the Studio Display with my KEF LS50WIIs. Fun experience.

On the Mac side of course the 6900XT is pretty solid as a GPU.

I paid around $6500 for a 28core/32GB/4TB/580X 7,1, all I did was upgrade the RAM to 192GB and dropped in the 6900XT and added an internal SSD or two for Windows with a Promise SSD/HDD carriage and its such a great machine.

I don't use Windows a lot but it comes in handy when needed.

Also now that I added dual Studio Displays, this completes my perfect setup. I was using dual LG 4k UL850s before and while they were decent monitors, they were not 5k and also I think my eyes hurt less on the Studio Displays since it has glass on it and its not matte like the LGs.

Did you install boot camp on a separate drive or did you have to set aside a partition on your main drive?
