Well, in the end, a sale stacked with a discount code meant I had to satisfy my curiosity.
I'm satisfied by the feel and smell of the leather, which doesn't have that over-processed quality of Apple's leather cases which I think robs them of much of leather's character. I still think they're nice, but not worth the cost (which would still have been more than what I paid for the Vaja).
That said, I don't know if I'll keep it. I've been spoiled by the functional aspect of the cheap-ish Tucch folio I've been using, whose design and magnets are strong enough to keep the flap closed (as well as trigger sleep/wake).
While the Vaja also has those magnets, they're either not strong enough, or the additional thickness from my screen protector and/or insufficient additional "lip" depth in the design is preventing the flap from "latching" like the Tucch does, and I'm not sure I can live with that. A lot of folio cases share the same issue, especially when used as wallets, which they try to overcome with ugly closure tabs, or don't even try at all (like Apple's folio).
It might not be as much of an issue for casual use, and for active use, I've got the Speck. I've got 90 days to mull it over. I ended up with two cases that I never used for my last phone (
up for sale in the Marketplace!), so I'm trying to avoid doing that again.
As far as the color, I didn't originally intend to end up with two dark blue cases, but that's where the circumstances lead me. My first color choice would have been the Chili Red, but I wanted something more durable than the more delicate Bridge leather, and didn't want Floater Black.
