Even when you add cases to the 9.7 it becomes rather heavy.
"heavy" relative to the weight of the iPad itself... I agree.

It's why I've ordered the Smart Keyboard and will just have a sleeve to protect the back when in my work bag
That'll work out great. That's what I encourage people to do... if they can get away with it. Those who are error-prone need to take the proper precautions. There are those for which the Otterbox Defender is not enough protection.

I think if you have the Smart Keyboard the back can't get damaged or scratched anyway as it's not touching the surface. So sleeve on the table when it is will be the answer.

However think will be skipping buying the Apple sleeve..£150 for sleeve is well damn!

This is true, the price for the Smart keyboard is better when compared to the price of the sleeve at least the smart keyboard adds some functionality. Do you guys recommend the smart keyboard? i never brought one with my 1st gen iPad Pro.

If you plan on doing a significant amount of type on it, absolutely yes. The most difficult part about buying the ASK is the price.

Yea it's a good point and because I'm going to be replacing my MacBook Pro with a new iPad Pro it will probably be best to get the ASK. Will probably test one out in the Apple store when i go to buy the new iPad Pro.

You can actually use it as a stand by folding it the other way. So kind of like how the smart cover stands up

The 10.5 is sick to hold compared to a 12.9. I got to do a comparison a little while ago, it even feels better to hold than the 9.7. I guess for content consumption that is a great thing, that is the main thing I have done with my iPads.

Man, I cannot wait to get one tomorrow as I preordered for in store pickup.

I LOVE the ASK. I find typing on it to be easier and faster than any other keyboard I've ever used. My ASK for my 12.9 is one of the main reasons I don't want to go to a 10.5; I've perfected the typing and the size is just right. I'm afraid to go smaller.

True, unless you catch one of those Best Buy open-box deals. I got my there for $145.

Agreed. You can find many decent-quality sleeves on Amazon for less than half the price of the Apple one.

After playing around with both 2017 models (12.9 and 10.5) in a store, and although trying hard to like the 12.9 because of it's basically gorgeous & huge display, I finally ordered the 10.5. Now 10.5 feels much closer in display size to the 9.7 than to the 12,9 (which of course is also mathematically true). I just did not find the 12.9 a very good handholdable device. Possible yes, comfortable, no.

As the 10.5 is about the same weight as the 9.7 and both clearly lighter than my old iPAD 2 (2012), it is the truly mobile tablet. After using it for a little while, the 9.7 display seems clearly smaller than the 10.5, almost smallish.
I also ordered the pencil and plan to explore it's capabilities with iOS 11 once it is out, if later I still lust for a big display, I may still buy the 12.9 for special purposes like higher rez photography etc.

I had the 12.9 since launch and I loved the screen size but never really loved the weight. It wasn't heavy just uncomfortable. I also never liked taking it out when I needed to travel. Hopefully in the future they have a lighter version

I think the 12.9" iPad Pro is more of a laptop replacement for the home whereas the 10.5" is more mobile, that's not to say you can't use the 12.9" on your travels. Also isn't splitscreen, multitasking and the features inside IOS 11 going to be better on the 12.9"?

"better" can be subjective. Having each window in splitscreen display the regular version of the app instead of the compact version (on the 10.5) is "better" for me. For others, the decreased size makes the 10.5 "better".

If they make a less compromise better I think it will sell more. Reduce the bezels and make it lighter.

Hence, why 10.5 with 12.9 resolution/retina mini pixel density would have been ideal for me. You get both regular app UI and decreased size. :p

I probably should of said can you do more on the 12.9" screen in multitasking and such over the 10.5"?

I adore my 2016 12.9 inch ipad (256 GB). I love the screen size and I have no problems taking it everywhere I go. I like it so much that I have a 2017 12.9 512 GB on the way. I don't think it's too big or bulky. Sure it would be nicer if it was smaller, but then I'd be giving up that gorgeous screen! For me it's 12.9 all the way - for ANY situation.

That is a good option for most, but not enough of a discount for me to deal with the uncertainty of the quality of the open-box.
I understand. Full Disclosure: I started thinking about whose fingers, in what state of cleanliness, had previously used the keyboard, and got the heebie-jeebies! So I returned it to Best Buy and bought a brand new one from Apple.

I was satisfied with the 9.7 as the "Robin" to my 12.9 "Batman". But having played with the 10.5 and it's 20% larger display in the Apple Store, I agree that the 9.7 now seems too small for a secondary productivity device.

On the other hand, the 10.5 is a bit heavier than the 9.7 pro (it's only noticeable on direct comparison). At 1.03 lbs, it's exactly the weight of the 2017 iPad Plain (which itself is based on the original iPad Air). Plus, it's not as easy to hold one-handed. All of which makes it a bit less suitable for reading in bed.
In any event, hope you enjoy your purchase.

Have you ever tried an ASK in store? Because honestly, I can't imagine my concern about buying a used one being who used it and how clean their hands were. I mean if you've ever touched anything in public, goodness knows what's been there. I'd be more concerned about whether they had taken care of it, and if it was still in perfect working condition.

Obviously, YMMV
