Well, living in New York City, where you see thousands of hands in all stages of cleanliness touching devices in the Apple Store and Best Buy, can give you pause about buying a "demo" model.
(Or maybe I'm just a "clean freak", LOL!)

Ok, so I put 10.5 as a laptop replacement. I've made my purchase and loving it so far (the only iPad I ever had was a 1st gen that I haven't used for quite a while - it's stuck on iOS5!).

I chose laptop replacement rather than content consumption because I will be doing more than merely consuming (at these prices, who buys the Pro only to browse the internet?!), however it will not replace my iMac, but be used in tandem (and do things, such as Apple Pencil-related, which it is more suited to)

So far, I'm absolutely loving my purchase.

A few hours with my new 12.9 and loving the extra screen size again. Coming from 9.7 it has been an adjustment but I'm very much convinced this will replace my MacBook.

Certainly needed the Smart Keyboard though. Love the sound of this thing. I bought the Smart Cover too for when I do take it out and about.

What are you buying a new iPad Pro for? will it be as a content consumption device or will you be aiming to replace your current laptop?
I've all but decided to get the iPad Pro and it will be the 10.5" flavor. When the original 12" was released I was tempted but never pulled the trigger. My concern was that for iPad type activities I was going to use it for, that was just too big. I a was also afraid it could get broken/damaged by being so large.

The 10.5 seems like a nice compromise, a tad larger then the 9.7 but not overly large.

I'll be using it mostly for content consumption and I have no plans for this to replace my laptop.

How does it fare as a device to use on the sofa for browsing the web in landscape/portrait with the on-screen keyboard? I guess for all those times where I don't have it sitting on a table for productivity stuff.

I don't need convincing that from a software and hardware perspective the 12" is a good laptop replacement, but am I going to find that I need to keep a smaller iPad for use around the house? Its a tough one to answer without gettting a device to try for a bit...

It's certainly a handful just holding it on the sofa with no keyboard for example but depends how you sit on the sofa. If you have your knees up abit it's not too bad but holding it with one hand isn't ideal at all. Not for long anyway

I think me personally I could use the Smart Cover in bed and use it fine as I sometimes have my knees up in bed and could just use it balancing on my knees.

But everybody is different though. That said loving this thing with the Smart Keyboard. So quick to type messages and emails on here.

Has anyone here done in store pick up? if so do you pay in store or online before picking up the iPad? I've not done in store pick up before.

I bought an iMac like this recently and paid online so you just need to go in and pick up your kit. Be sure to bring whatever ID you are asked for though as some of the sales people enforce it more than others and there's more chance of being asked for it on an expensive item like this.

Thanks for that feedback, that's kind of what I thought it would be like which sounds ok to me!

Thank you for that, i didn't know they even asked for ID i have a driving license and or passport so i should be good.

Just to add a response to the questions about size and ease of use sitting on the couch and in bed. I'm a pretty small person. The 12.9 certainly isn't something I could stand around and hold in one hand all day (although without cases on it, it's just not that heavy), or hold in one hand to read on the couch, but I sit against the back of the couch with my legs propped up and use that way to play games, read, etc. I do the same if I want to use it in bed. I keep my ASK flipped back and use the on-screen keyboard when I do that. It would be even lighter in my lap if I'd just pull the ASK off. When I know I'm going to be typing a good bit, I'm usually at the table with my ASK (which, by the way, I LOVE), but I use it propped in my lap at some point every single night.

Now granted, I don't throw this thing in my purse when I'm gonna be out and about running errands, but I doubt I'd do that even with a 10.5. I think the only thing I'd be likely to haul around would be a mini, and I just haven't found the need for - my 7+ works for killing time if I'm in a waiting room or sitting still in traffic; stuff like that. I DO take this beast with me when I travel, and it's just not a big deal to throw it in my overnight or carry-on bag and haul it.

Sorry for the basic question, but does the Apple Smart Keyboard give the same protection and functionality as the normal Smart Cover, just with the added bulk of the keyboard part?

Those of you who have the Smart Keyboard does it work with covers for the back of the iPad? I've noticed Apple haven't realised anything that covers the back of the iPad but there are covers on Amazon and ebay that cover the back. Also I wonder if it would work with the new leather sleeve Apple have made.

Should be no issues.

I had a back cover on last years model and worked fine with the Smart Keyboard.

Yes. And honestly, it just doesn't add that much bulk. The ASK itself is quite slim.

I just purchased one from Amazon that works with the ASK. You do have to be sure you get one that has a cutout area for the ASK; they don't all have that.

I had a similar case on my 1st gen as well.

Ah i will have to look out for that then because i have been looking at third party ones on Amazon and eBay and i've found a couple i like but they are hard are clip on ones so they may not be compatible. That's not to say that i will get the ASK, i have been debating it for some time now as i never got it for my 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9" but i may do so with the new one.

10.5" all the way. I've owned the 12.9", 9.7" and now the 10.5". The 12.9" is awesome, but the footprint is just too huge. It is larger than my MacBook Pro in every dimension other than thickness, yet has a smaller screen. The 9.7" is nice, but the screen is just a tad too small IMO. The Smart Keyboard keys on the 9.7" are just a tad too small, which is fixed on the 10.5".
