Just saw the 10.5.

Big nope for me. Looks the same as 9.7.
Lol, I reckon that's exactly its appeal.

Personally, I plan on upgrading to 10.5 to replace my Pro 9.7 eventually. Just don't feel like I need to at the moment and the 12.9 gets priority as I've been wanting to get one since release (just with better GPU and more storage). :p

I have both sizes, 1st gen 12.9" and the 10.5". My 9.7" Pro was feeling small after using the 12.9" Pro, so it has gone to my husband and the 10.5" is a great replacement. The screen is just bigger enough that it has taken away that feeling that it was too small, at least for now.
I'm using the 10.5" as an iPad, usually in 1 app mode. I like it for it's portability. However, if I'm being honest, I think my favourite size is now the 12.9". I use the 12.9" more and more instead of my MacBook Pro. It's like the 10.5" is my iPad and the 12.9" is my laptop. I have the ASK for the 12.9", which coincidently works with the 10.5" as well. It doesn't fit as a cover for the 10.5", but I can sit the 10.5" on it at a desk and use the full sized keyboard on it and it's great.
If I was to travel right now, I'd find it a tough choice to decide which iPad to take with me and may end up deciding to take the 10.5" for its portability, camera and the fact that I have it fully specked with 512GB, great for backing up photos and loading with video for a trip. My 12.9" is 'only' 128GB, but if I took my 2TB Seagate Wireless drive as well, then I'd be more than fine. My current plan is to upgrade the 12.9" next upgrade cycle. I'd do it now, but my husband wouldn't be impressed. So, 12.9" gen 3, fully specked, will then probably become my main computer and main iPad in one device. I do regret not getting the 12.9" this time around, but the benefits of getting the 10.5" to replace my 9.7" this time was that I felt that my 9.7" was too small and the 10.5" replaces it nicely and also lets me pass on the 9.7" to my husband, then his Air 2 to our 11yo. So I'm already waiting for the 12.9" gen 3. Hoping it's 12 months away, not closer to 2 years. lol.

Hence, why 10.5 with 12.9 resolution/retina mini pixel density would have been ideal for me. You get both regular app UI and decreased size. :p

I was terrified of that and surprised apple didn't do that.

For me, that would have ruined the pro and made the 12.9 my only option despite my disdain for the size. I tried he iPad mini and got headaches. Text and UI elements were just too small. This 10.5" is my dream iPad

I'm curious if there are more people that would have preferred the iPad Mini PPI with full-iPad split view than there are those that would have preferred the PPI to remain the same and just expand for more content.

I probably should of said can you do more on the 12.9" screen in multitasking and such over the 10.5"?

No, functionality is the same, just the UI is condensed. Fewer toolbar buttions, perhaps a bottom toolbar like in Safari, options hidden in menus, etc.

Correct. The 10.5 iPad uses a 50/50 display interface, similar to the iPhone. Where as the 12.9 iPad uses a full iPad user interface.

I have been trying the new 12.9 with iOS 11 for a few days as a consumption device but it is too large.
I am returning it and getting the 10.5" instead.

I assume zoom mode would have been available if Apple had gone with a higher resolution so you could opt for the 9.7 UI if you preferred.

Ok, but the 12.9" iPad Pro had more screen estate to do things like picture in picture.

Yes, you have 2.4" of space to spread things out. Much nicer, but much more unwieldy. It's all about trade offs.

Very true, I currently have the 12.9" iPad Pro and I do like the look of the 10.5" but because I use my iPad for watching videos, multitasking Netflix, drawing and some word processing as well as taking notes I'm not sure if it would be as good as the 12.9"

Most likely, but I remember I did that on my iPhone 6 just to show my mother (who would want that) and there was a slight fuzz to it. Like when you use non 4-1 scaling on a retina mac.

I'm going to say that at a desk, the 12.9"'iPad Pro offers a better experience at almost everything, but since I only use the iPad at a desk about 20% of the time, I value the much lighter sleeker device.

It's kind of like the 13 vs 15” MacBook Pro debates, except these have equal power.

Going from the 12.9 to 10.5 will be a downgrade for multitasking. The user will need to evaluate if that's with it. However, the 10.5 is a big upgrade for multitasking over the 9.7". Many people here said that you just couldn't multitask on the 9.7", but I did all the time. Split view, PIP, etc. sure, it was cramp at times, but it worked. This new iPad Pro will work that much better.

Yep, one needs to consider multitasking. Going smaller will not reap the same benefit as the 12.9.

Better on the 10.5 than 9.7 perhaps but until one tries it the possibly exists of not being happy with that when ios 11 goes public. Unless you already did the beta but the 12.9 would still be better.

But then again is the 12.9 really worth $150 more than the 10.5 on base models?

Which is why i got the 1st gen 12.9" and think i will be getting the 12.9" 2nd gen when i upgrade in August. I multitask a lot on my iPad Pro as well as using the Apple Pencil for notes, drawing and so on. I do still use an iMac as my main desktop but i'm hoping to try word processing on the new iPad Pro with the ASK keyboard.

Don' t expect too much. I really miss a trackpad for corrections, copy and paste, etc. The keyboard is nice, but apple should have added a trackpad this year, if only for text and scrolling top to bottom on a webpage. No need for a trackpad to select apps or add a pointer to ios, just for those purposes.

If they add a trackpad to the ASK, it would really be desktop replacement for me, and you wouldn' t get a Smart Keyboard, when used as a Smart Cover , that has a bump, as it is now, it could be flat.
I think and hope next year...

I'll keep that in mind, do you think the ASK is worth getting tho? I do use an iMac as my main desktop because I do still love my Mac as well as my iPad Pro.

I thoroughly agree with this...

But fully respect those who don't hold that view ;) it is the viewpoint that won, after all!

I think it is a nice keyboard. I can' t see myself typing on the vurtual keyboard anymore on the 12.9 inch. It acts as a great table stand too. But with the 10.5 inch that is a lot more portable and can be used more as a real tablet instead of an desktop replacement, i wouldn' t care for it that much.
Fir 12.9 which i primarely use on the table, and don' t carry around i found the ask a great asset.

For me, I can't use the virtual keyboard when typing. I prefer a physical keyboard and even though I don't need it all the time, it's nice to have the smart keyboard when you do need it. It's an expensive attachment, but you really appreciate it when you do have it and it's Build design is very nice with the carpeted like fabric.

Sold my original 12.9 and now I have the 10.5. For what I do the 10.5 is perfect.
Ok, so you didn' t have any trouble downsizing?
Thinking of this move myself, and hoping for a redesign of the 12.9 inch next year.
Or perhaps a 11.5 inch iPad Pro or something.

Both of the current ipad pro' s are a compromise, one is too small but very portable, and has a nice design.
The 12.9 is too big, and currently only use it on the table with the ASK, but it hardly leaves the table. On my couch i end up using my 7+ instead of an ipad. But the bigger screen estate is great, but the fact that it doesn' t have the newer design with smaller bezels and more portability is a real downside for me.

If only apple released a 11.5-12 inch with the new design.....
But that is usually the case with apple. I found the 6/s/7 too small, and the 6/s/7 plus too big....decided on the plus, and after 3 3 years apple will finally com,e with an iphone with a 5.2 useable display area.

What I really want is a 12" model with no bezel that weighs 1lb. But for now I'll definitely take the 10.5" as it's better than nothing but not huge to lug around. I wish I could justify purchasing both as I think the 12.9" will be a better laptop replacement but the 10.5" is better for portability, simpler tasks and content consumption. But I'm starting to make it work for productivity now. I just find myself wanting a little bit more display. It's a shame they couldn't do 326ppi so it had the same resolution as the 12.9", which would go a long way towards addressing the shortcomings for me. I find myself wishing that some of the apps I use would have slimmer interfaces so they would just get out of the way of the content I'm editing.

Technically still the first iteration. I expect ProMotion was difficult/expensive enough that it's much easier if Apple can just use the same panels for both 10.5 and 12.9 for the first batch. I still have hope it'll get a PPI upgrade. :)
