Aside from regardless how tall somebody is or how Large the iPad is, eventually you adapt to it. Most who initially graduate to a larger display, at first it's awkward or cumbersome to adjust to a larger display, but overtime you realize you could never go back to anything smaller than a 12.9 iPad Pro. It also depends on how mobile somebody is and what they want for their convenience.
This morning I was using my new 12.9 on the subway, and I was so appreciative of having a large display without having to deal with the bulk and weight of a MacBook Pro (I sold my 15" last year). It's all a matter of perspective -- so many people compare the 12.9 to smaller iPads, but if you remember how it felt to lug a laptop with a similar-sized screen, the big iPad feels wonderfully light and easy to carry around.

I'm not getting into a operating system comparison here (although I think that iOS 11 will make that point closer to be moot), just talking about portability.

For me it's very simple, 12.9 as a Laptop replacement where productivity is a focus, 10.5 as a companion device for mobile consumption/light productivity and bedtime reading. Doesn't mean that these devices can't do or be both, but these are my views on the strength of each. Much easier to walk around the house with the 10.5, or use while on the toilet, or take notes while walking around with the iPad in one hand and the Apple Pencil in the other. The 12.9 excels at Multitasking and Split screen use, or seeing the screen easier while typing in your lap.

I feel like the 12.9 in landscape is perfect. The 9.7/10.5 seem too small in that regard and work better in portrait. It wasn't until I spent time with the 12.9 in landscape that I realised how much I prefer it. Landscape is just so much better for consumption, editing, everything. I love it. Can't go back now. My wife's 9.7 pro looks like an iPad mini. Compared to my laptop the 12.9 is still a small, light, convenient device.

I've flip-flopped on this quite a bit over the past week since I bought my iPP 10.5. I previously had the 12.9 iPP, and went into the Apple store with the intention of checking out the new 10.5, but thinking I was likely to upgrade to the new 12.9 as I liked the form factor and size (as I get older, the 12.9 tends to be easier to read as well).

Then I played with the 10.5, and fell in love with how lightweight it was, and how it seemed to be the perfect middle ground.

After a week of use, however, I'm thinking of returning the 10.5 and going back to a 12.9. The 10.5 is great for couch-surfing and reading in bed, but the 12.9 was more productive overall. I'm also seriously contemplating using it for work and simply not taking my 13" MBA with me on the road; I think I can do 95% of what I need to with the 12.9 iPP and a keyboard (external BT or the ASK).

Of course, my local (even regional) Apple stores no longer have the 12.9 iPP that I want in stock, and are showing delivery dates into mid July. :-(

My contract on my old mini 4 is coming up soon and I’m tempted to get the 10.5 cellular 256GB model to take to work and out and about. I love my 12.9 2nd gen and use it all the time when at home but thinking to carry on a new contract with the 10.5 for when I’m out and about going places and to use when working nights and of course to use in bed. It would be £43.00 a month with 2GB od data which would be enough really as we have free wifi at work.

Hmm decisions.

If you have a use for both and you can afford it get both, treat yourself you only live once :) personally i think i'm going to get a 256GB 12.9" version when i go to the Apple store. Looking to reserve the night before tho just to ensure i get one.
I originally did think of getting the 512GB but i don't even think downloading the entire 1-6 series of Game of Thrones on my iPad would take up that amount of storage which is mad  i do have other things on my iPad like movies and other TV shows as well has documents and stuff, i still have around 8GB left on my 128GB 1st get iPad Pro 12.9" so the 512GB may be excessive.

I have 8 tv series, 7 movies, and 68 YouTube videos on my iPad Pro 10.5 512 GB with still 174GB left of space.

That's a lot of space left, even if i was to download most of the TV series i have it probably still wouldn't take up 512GB. I don't have Youtube videos but i do have documents in iCloud drive that will probably end up on the new Files app when IOS 11 comes out. I'm thinking of getting Affinity Photo app as well but i still don't see it using up all that storage.

Ohhhhhh this one ? https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/affinity-photo/id1117941080?mt=8

I keep asking myself if I should get it but I am not much of a photo person.

I will likely stay with just my 12.9 but the thought did cross my mind.

Would need to use the 10.5 at home as £43 a month for the odd usage at work isn't enough. I would likely only use the 10.5 on nights anyway.

256GB is enough for me. Got about 80GB left

Just at times you may want a smaller size but love my 12.9

What do you all use your keyboard for? Obiously typing, but what exactly? I keep feeling like I should get one but with a tablet I don't think at the moment I need one just for typing emails. So what are you all typing?? I feel like I am missing out on something haha.

Also, does anyone have the new Logitech slim combo keyboard case? Wondering if it's a good alternative to Apple's version.

I use it for forum typing for youtube watching and the odd email I will just use the smart cover. The log keyboard to me looks so damn bulky. Would add so much weight to the ipad. I think a lot of people have returned theirs for those who bought them

The problem I'm having it that i don't just use one device, i use my iMac as my main desktop (i love the iMac) and i also use a MacBook Pro and my 12.9" iPad Pro, the question i keep asking myself is should i replace my now old (2011) MacBook Pro with the new 12.9" iPad Pro and IOS 11 when it comes out? i have a use for every device own for example my iPad Pro i use for drawing with the Apple Pencil, web browsing, photo editing, games and so on, i also use it to write the odd blog but nothing too intensive at the moment. I ask myself should i buy the Smart Keyboard and simply replace my MacBook Pro but i don't think it's that simple, i love using both the Mac and the iPad Pro!

Nice then my mom can get it and use it for her photos if she wants!

Hopefully it is easy to learn.

There are Youtube videos that teach how to use it. It's one of the Pro apps that are being highlighted for use on the iPad Pro.

I don't have a keyboard yet, but it will be for interacting in excel, and my kids will use it for their homework.

Since the Windows version of Affinity Photo will be the desktop version, I can speak to the ease of learning. I am 70 y.o. and learned this back in Nov 2015 both as a new digital camera user(canon) and never having used software editing tools before. It was not difficult to learn both Affinity Photo and my camera at the same time. But I was determined and watched a lot of youtube videos and also asked questions on Affinity on the Affinity Forum.

You have an iMac and Mac. It doesn't really sound like you can simply replace the laptop with an iPad. I feel like if you need a keyboard you probably need a mouse/trackpad. That makes it pretty difficult to replace the Mac with an iPad. I am debating the 10.5/12.9 simply because of the size. I am realizing neither can realistically replace my Mac, and for that reason I lean 10.5.

I have both because when I was at university a few years back I needed a Mac that was also portable for lectures that's why I got the MacBook Pro, when I was back home I used an iMac, now that I've finished university I do tend to use both for different reasons, the iMac is more for when I need that 27" canvas to do things like editing podcasts and so on, the MacBook Pro I tend to use to write with (as I'm a writer) i need something that's comfortable and works for me to spend hours writing on.
I also have Final Draft software on both Mac's an I love the fact that I can start writing on my MacBook Pro and then pick up on my iMac or even my iPad Pro (Now that there is a Final Draft version for iPad) so it's kind of like I'm linked to all these devices and they work so well with each other.

I had a hard time choosing, but after buying the 10.5" I'm glad I didn't go with the 12.9". The screen on the 10.5" is quite a bit bigger than the 9.7" actually. On paper the difference seems small, but in real use it seems perfect. I would only get the 12.9 if I rarely used my iPad on the sofa (I do a lot) and used it more for productivity stuff on a desk.

That's the awesome thing about it. My manga collection alone is close to 1TB. I just started on American comics so my comiXology is sitting at maybe 100-200GB at the moment (hard to guess, I don't have everything downloaded). Also have a 20TB mini-Netflix/Plex server (it's been quite useful during internet outages).

I can't store as many videos as I want on the 512GB iPad but it does mean I can store some while still having a sizable local reading library (not complete, mind, but a good enough selection that I'd have plenty of options in terms of genre, etc).

I am a owner of the new 10.5 and the Gen 1 12.9. Physical function neither is superior. Simply comes down to mobility. I purchased the 12.9 when it first released. Figured it would replace my laptop wanted something smaller and mobile. But the actually physical size of the 12.9 is pretty big (bezels). Works good as a laptop replacement but is no longer a tablet. So when I made my purchase for the 10.5, I wanted to satisfy what I have been looking to do, and that's portable power. The new 12.9 is just the older iPad with newer internals, more say an upgrade. The 10.5 is all around new iPad. It's powerful and portable. The screen size is noticeably smaller, but I also notice the 12.9 has a lot of extra screen space when it comes to the design of apps (a lot of upscaling than optimized for the screen size). I still enjoy movies as I did on my 12.9. I see myself taking the 10.5 a lot more places with me than the 12.9. So comes down with whether you like a bigger screen or smaller body. One thing I do miss is walking on the opposite side of the room and still being able to view clearly with ease, what I'm watching. Also I will add the 10.5 screen size is perfect for my needs, drawing, browsing, or entertainment. Good size, everything is viewable and comfortable on the eyes. I have not yet experience any eye strain. Also recommend apple Smart Keyboard goes perfect with the 10.5. Was not a easy decision but I'm happy with my 10.5......

Hi, I just want to add my experience here. I have a 2014 MacBook Pro 15” which has been used less and less as I mainly use my iPad Pro 9.7 that I got in March last year. I can’t give OS X up just yet, but I would like to pass it on to my son for university in 2 years time - fingers crossed.

I nearly bought the larger iPad last time, but fell for truetone, camera and portability of the 9.7 Pro and I’ve been happy with it. My husband got my Air 2 and he uses it daily.

I have a ‘significant birthday’ in the next few weeks, so I can choose a new iPad. My husband will receive my iPad Pro 9.7 and the Air2 will be passed on to our son to help him with his A-level studies.

I am overstating things and waffling, I know, but I’m British, it’s what we do . . . .

So, I’m looking at a new iPad Pro, 10.5 or 12.9 and I’ve made a few trips to a few stores to check them out with my son in tow to give me his opinion, but also to set things up on the adjacent iPad in store to compare.

It was a journey, it involved John Lewis, Apple Store, McDonalds, and ice-creams. I’ll post my experience in the morning if anyone is interested (or not died of boredom) .
