Initially I was thinking the stainless steel with a leather band and a sport band, but may end up getting the sports edition and saving some money until the second or third generation comes out.

Probably the standard version

Lol, that doesn't mean anything.

Probably about 50% of people would take "standard" to mean: "the cheapest version", Sport, which will undoubtedly outsell the others by a very, very wide margin & thus be fairly considered the "standard".
The other 50% on the other hand would likely consider the Apple Watch, sans the "Edition" or "Sport" moniker... by virtue of not having such a designation, "standard".

I have a brilliant idea!!
Why don't you use the terminology that Apple has chosen for their new products, that everyone can understand, instead of making up your own nicknames... in this case, equivalent to speaking in code.

I am not a typical buyer....but FWIW

For some time now, I have been researching the Apple Watch concept, it's various forms, designs and straps on the one hand....and the functionality, as designed by Apple, and the SDK implications of the kinds of apps that may become available in year 1 ...and where this wearable device could end up by, say, 2017-2018, particularly in the broad category of health and very proximate human interaction.

I have read all there is to read on the Apple site, the views of fashion executives, Swiss and other watch executives, Wall Street Analyst types etc., etc...

I am an Apple and Jobs fan, and an investor....so feel free to interpret my thoughts, observations and conclusions with that filter.

I believe the limited battery life is the biggest drawback. The adoption I believe will be good in the first few months, kind of flat line for a few months thereafter...and depending on whether the battery life issue is a deal breaker or not, for real life use...it will either take off after that...or peter out until Apple comes out with a version with at least 1 week of battery life.

However, my bet is that whether the Apple Watch is a bust or a success, based on history of watches, and Apple as a brand, the first iterations will probablly become collector items. THIS is my BET!

This is because of the wearable device element, coupled with perceived human desires for fashion, prestige, differentiation in social situations etc. and the collector dynamics of watches over time...for marquis brands...will be primary driver of the value accretion of the Apple Watch in 10 plus years!

So, I have decided that I will be getting one each of the stainless steel and the aluminum versions, and also one each of the yellow gold and rose gold versions, with about at least 6 straps in total, for myself. I will also gift my daughter and my brother one of the aluminum watches.....

Of course, I am not an average consumer......BUT still a valid question would be...are you nuts?

What's my thesis?

I expect the gold versions will sell for between 3-7 times or more of the list price in a max of 10 years, and that assumes gold at that point is still less than $1,500 an ounce, though it is likely to be at least between $2,000-$2,500 an ounce by then, primarily due to consumer demand for gold as a commodity in China and India. If gold does indeed end up in the $2,000-$2,500 ball park, by 2025....with the colector value element driving the bulk of the valuation gains, this multiple of gains would end up being conservative.

However, my thesis on future valuation has its risks, and so this is NOT a suggestion or a recommendation for anyone....just a gut instinct thing based on many many years as a global marketer and businessman, whose only claim to success is actively using and integrating my left and right brains all the time....

DESIGN, Functionality, BRAND, WEARABLe eye candy, the need for human expression and differentiation and history of watch collectors who will be collecting this is in future.....all key elements of my thesis.

But I am an quant guy.....a creative quant guy, and a finance guy who loves taking risks! So, take my thoughts FWIW....which is probably not a lot more than 2 cents!

Should be fun to Watch (pun intended) and observe its evolution.....either way!

I expect to hold on to all of my watch buys for at least 10 years, until the valuation zooms, and then, at the right time, sell all of the first gen versions, except one of the gold versions.

Time will tell whether my bet works....but either way it won't make much of difference to me in terms of moola....so I will be okay, irrespective.
