I would advise to anybody undecided to really think about flash memory, it's much more durable and easy on the battery life. After my 15GB 1.8" drive dying I really don't rely on HDD based ipods, sure they're much cheaper per GB but remember, it's not a question of if you're HDD is going to die, it's a question of WHEN it's going to die...

I agree with what you say regarding the benefits of flash memory in terms of battery life etc, however it's not entirely infallible as you seem to suggest. Flash Memory has a finite number of erase-write cycles, so every time you write to it, you're slowly counting down from that finite number. When it reaches zero, that particular memory location will likely be dead.

Fortunately because the iPod is written to fairly infrequently but read constantly, this works to its advantage. I just wanted to point out the downside of flash memory (besides cost) because there does seem to be a lot of people out there who people it's totally invincible :p

To answer the thread topic, I think I'll be buying a 160GB iPod Classic, or a 5.5G 80GB iPod Video (if they're going very cheap now the Classic is out). I would have loved an iPod Touch but there's not enough storage and I'm not paying £40 more for 10% of the storage of a 160GB iPod Classic with fancy touch screen.

The thing about the touch is yes, it's a helluva device but I just can't justify spending £200 on 8GB of NAND as opposed to £160 for 80GB of HDD. My music library is constantly growing and I can't be bothered picking and choosing my music when I can carry it all.

Plus, I like the slightly retro iPod design of the classic. Does anyone else think it looks like a thinned out 4G?

I was very upset by this update, i think Apple destroyed their iPod lineup and lost a chance to sell tons and tons of Touches if they just put a hard drive in them. I have 32GB+ of music, no way in hell will i pay $400 and be able to hold half of my music library! Touch would have been perfect for the 160GB hard drive, it could hold everyone's music and movies!

I need an iPod so I'm going for the 80GB classic. I don't know what color yet (i don't like the finish on either honestly) but i'll probably end up going with silver. The cost:capacity ratio is just amazing, it's just a shame it's sort of a boring update beyond that...

I'm getting a 160GB Classic, just got to decide which colour to go with.

I thought I would get the black but the silver is starting to grow on me. I'll probably make my mind up when I see them in the shops.

I ordered an 80 gig iPod Classic (Silver).

I have a iPod + Photo 30G which just died two weeks ago. I have 23G of music and will want to add movies to the new iPod.

I'll wait to buy the Touch when I can get it with at least 60G of space. Should be in a year or two.

for everyone BUY ALL NEW IPODS THROUGH AMAZON! i always do this cause its free shipping no tax.. but i know some ipodfanatics want it now.. im waiting a few days and going to get mine from amazon.

On second thoughts, I might wait for the refurbs to come in so I can get a 16GB or save me some extra £££ on a 8GB to save for my MacBook...

Are all of the new Ipods available at retail outlets such as Best Buy, or can they only be ordered through Apple? The 2nd generation Nano that I have was purchased at Best Buy.

I'm also wondering how practical the wi-fi is on the new touch screen Ipods. I'm not interested in the ability to buy songs when I'm at Star Bucks, but I haven't used wi-fi that much and just wondering how many places, or what kind of places provide a wi-fi signal? I may end up just staying with my older Nano as it in good shape, and it does the basic thing I need...plays music.

Nothing. My first-gen shuffle is still chugging along just fine. I have no use for video.

The only device that's remotely tempting is the touch, but since I generally bring my iBook with me when I go out, it's really not necessary.

One feature that could eventually convince me to get a touch is some sort of remote-control function. After all, it's got wifi, so why can't I use it to control my home music network?

In saying this - you may have answered a burning question i have....

> Will preordering through apple mean i get it before it''s in stores?

I would hope so, i just don't know for sure.

Anyone know?

I'll most likely be buying the Touch after the reviews start coming in. ...If they're poor I'll give Apple some time to make necessary fixes.

It was the WiFi that convinced me. :D
