Looking at many of the Android screen grabs on this thread and many others, I can't see how they are aesthetically more pleasing than the proposed iOS 7 look. I've read many posts slating it, yet I can't agree that those are any better looking and I'm not saying they are in any way worse either for that matter. I get the impression its being knocked simply for the sake of it in many cases. In fact that is obvious IMO.

I'm knocking it because it's simply a look and feel update. There's nothing of any substance to iOS7 that changes the value proposition. It's a reskinned version of iOS6, yet most people on these forums treat it like it's a massive leap forward.

I can't speak for everybody but I didn't feel iOS needed to leap too much forward. A few features added and a new look is quite welcome from my point of view. If people are happy, why knock it?

iOS has it's flaws and Android trumps it feature wise, but overall I think Apple still wins in shear simplicity and beauty. The iPhone 5 is a beautifully engineered device. I can't find an Android device that is on the same hardware level.

Well I'd say there is ONE ;) But then again, I prefer the 4" Display.

I feel the opposite. I think Apple added enough new features and changes to iOS7, that they didn't really need to do UI redesign. Especially since it's for an "S" version.

I'll stick with iOS as my primary device. I may start straying to Android OS on tablets more often, however.

Besides.....I don't like being a second-class texter to my friends by showing up as green in the middle of their group MMS chats. Although green IS the color of envy so, kinda fits I suppose. :D

In a group having and Android device in it all messages should be green unless they are all iPhones. It drives me nuts. I'm in a group with 5 people and only 1 has an Android phone so we all get SMS.

same here, i don't think it has many new features, they just copied android and still they are way behind android, one more thing to notice is that they used too much white in it which makes it even more boring, i'd definitely choose android over iOS7, so many features so many appearances. i love android.

Some people just don't seem to understand that bigger screens are not for everybody and push it as a negative.

The irony is spectacular.

And that's the point.

Everyone is settled into the cycle, and expecting nothing of substance. 'It's just for an S version so we don't expect much'.

As consumers, it's your prerogative to expect companies to vie for your custom, yet so many people are content to settle for spec bumps, not question Apple and not try any of the alternatives.

That said, the one's that get me are the 'I want to try product x, but I'm too invested in the ecosystem', just as they're about to invest even more heavily

FWIW, I don't doubt that iOS7 is very capable and user friendly, just that the world's largest company took a whole year to produce iOS with a lick of paint. At this juncture, I fail to see a compelling reason to buy a 5S when there'll be a drop in price on the 5, and likely no killer feature to justify the price differential.

iOS7 is pushing me away toward android again. It makes me sad to leave, but I can only stay on iOS 6 for so long. Once the apps I use do updates that require iOS7, I will have no choice but to either upgrade or change platforms. And after using the beta for a week, updating is something I really prefer not to do, unless apple makes some drastic changes to the appearance by the final release. Maybe I will be back for iOS12 or whenever they do another major redesign.

Those that are jailbroken, I'm curious, will you upgrade to iOS 7?

Was the main thing that you jailbroke for for settings toggles? That's all it needed from Apple to give up jailbreak?

I'm curious.

Making your decision based on a week of beta 1 use is hilarious....

You people can't be serious can you?

Pretty much. My choice is 50% function, 50% looks. The 50% function is there, its the appearance thats pushing me away. If the icons stay flat, if the headers stay white and look like MS outlook, Im sticking with my decision. The only thing I found wrong with the beta was the look. So I made my decision on iOS 7 unless they change the look. Albeit, its likely they will modify them, it has to be pretty different to get me to switch. Its a personal thing. For me iOS 6 has both look and function, iOS 7 has function, but not looks that fit my style.

Pushed me hard

I picked up a Galaxy S4 just to try it. I really like the big screen and all the other features. It's a shame that Apple didn't keep advancing like Samsung. Having to wait 2 years for a legitimate successor to my Iphone 5 is not good business. Apple needs to wake up. I'm keeping the S4, selling the Ip5 and getting a S4 for my wife and selling her Ip 4S.

Just out of curiosity, did you happen to look at an HTC One? I'm stuck in the sandbox right now so I won't be upgrading phones for a while, but the HTC One sure is a nice looking phone & seems to flirt more with the iPhone folks with its aluminum unibody design.

Why not? People come to the same conclusions after an hour with Android, what's the difference?

Well, the difference is that there's more to learn with Android. Android is a deeper OS.

Honestly, with iOS, what you see is pretty much what you get. I'm all for fair time and use, but there's not much to discover in terms of the operating system [other than frustrations when you're trying to do some of the most simplest tasks, of course].

I appreciate what you are saying about a 'deeper OS' with Android, but in the grand scheme of things its only a very small number of consumers who demand the levels of freedom that you guys discuss here. Not 'everybody' (there's that word again) is into the geek stuff.

The reason iOS sells so well is because it works so well. Sure you are restricted in comparison to Android in terms of more technical stuff, but what exactly do most people need to do that they can't on an iPhone? I'm yet to find something where I think, wow I wish I could do that. I can text, email, look at all my social networking, make calls, change the wallpaper if I wish, surf the net, use a variety of apps, facetime friends and family, listen to music, use as a sat nav...The list goes on. The way I see it Android is just a different OS that allows the user to do all the things I have listed, just in a different way. Basic tasks really. I know there is a competition here to prove why one is better than the other, but in all reality both OS's serve different needs in the market and I can't honestly say one is superior than the other because I've used both and know what I want from a personal perspective. What I want may not be what others likes and vice versa. Its just personal taste and nothing can really be crowned as king here.

I had an HTC one for one day. It certainly looks nice, but the wake button on top left, almost recessed, plus no microsd, no battery removal ability, and unrepairable, were deal breakers for me. Also, I wasn't confident that HTC had the assets to support the phone. I returned it even before the capacitive button problem had surfaced.

Agreed. The lack of either full windowed or at least snap (see Windows RT) multitasking on large-screen devices (iPads) is a big letdown. (And the new background running multitasking feature isn't providing true multitasking either.)
