I think I'm gonna pre-order the 12 mini over the 12 pro (currently have an 11 pro) using the iPhone upgrade program... I'll miss the optical zoom for sure but the 12 mini still will have portrait mode as far as I can tell.

I think the iPhone upgrade program still allows for a return period right? Just wondering because my line of thinking is to pre-order the 12 mini and if I hate it for any reason, return it for a 12 pro... my assumption is that the 12 pro will already be out for a month so exchanging out for a 12 pro shouldn't be too hard unless they have some inventory issues...

Yeah. You can still return the iPhone within 14 days.

Inventory issues are my concern as well. If there were going to be plenty of Pro’s come Nov 13, I’d wait. But with the holidays coming, new things tend to disappear. I Jumped on the S4 Apple Watch, glad I did as it was out of stock until like January after its release

If I hate the 12 mini for any reason and there are inventory issues with the 12 pro then I think I’d probably just hang on to my 11 pro until I could get a 12 pro.

I really wasn't in the market for a new phone, but I want to see this in person. I may consider upgrading from my XS, if I sell my phone for a good price, and rejoin the IUP.

I’ve never liked the curved back or stainless steel iPhones. I might have to sell my 11 Pro and go for the Mini. I absolutely love the design. The iPhone 4/5 were the most visually appealing designs in my opinion. I loved how it was so slim and light. The Pro just feels bulky and heavy like a phone from years ago.

I was getting to a point of being jaded about overexposure to phone usage, social media in particular. So a smaller phone is exactly wanted; more compact and more compact in my life generally. Anyone with smaller hands will especially appreciate it.

Well, I wasn’t going to do it, but I set a reminder to order the 12 mini 128gb in black. The trade in for my se2 brings the price down a good amount. My “older” eyes will appreciate the bigger screen and still being even smaller than my se2.

Hahaha... I already ordered a case from Amazon.
I picked this one because it has flat sides unlike some others with round sides. I have been waiting for flat sided iPhone and why would I go with a round sided case?
And I like the little feet on the corners because without them the back will get scratched up.
I cannot waaaaaaitttttt!!!

I still find it hard to consider any screen size at 5.4" as 'mini' when it's just one decimal smaller than my Galaxy Note II. I'm still used to screens around 4-4.8" max, but maybe I'm just old school.

I get that but it is 20mm shorter than the Note 2 and like 15 or 16mm narrower.

Tempted, but I would like to actually see and try it first. Going by the dimensions, iPhone 12 is just slightly bigger than X, XS and Pro 11, while mini is smaller than 6-SE2. So I will wait to try both 12 and mini in my hand first.

Interesting to see everyone's thoughts on switching to the iPhone Mini! Like many of you, it's the option that I found the most attractive.

I'm coming from an iPhone XS that I've held on to for two years. Apart from the screen size, what I would lose if I switched to the iPhone Mini are:

  • 3D Touch
  • Telephoto lens
  • Dual optical image stabilization
Small things, yes, but I think would miss those, especially the first two.

I know I stand to gain so much more—Apple's most powerful SoC to date, a more advanced display with the highest PPI in the entire iPhone 12 range, a better front camera, enhanced photography capabilities, night mode, 5G, etc.—but I'm somehow holding back.

I can live with having the same 4 GB of RAM and only slightly better battery life… but—and I'm slightly ashamed to say this—it's the storage capacity that's holding me back.

I'm on a 256 GB model, and I'm approaching maximum capacity. I'm not keen on turning on the "optimize photos" iCloud option to free up storage; I'd prefer to have the full resolution photos on device, all the time.

If Apple offered a 512 GB iPhone Mini, I guess I'd be much more inclined to switch.

Do you ever take the time to look through your 15,000 photos and 12,000 videos?

Hey, they're only around 10,000! 🤣 [I'm a pack rat, for both physical and digital stuff.]

But yes, I frequently do. I'm hit by nostalgia often, and I like seeing what pics or videos I took, say, on this day but two or three years ago. I also like the security of having the full-resolution pics available at a moment's notice.

Though, with the iPhone Mini announcement, I'm slowly starting to warm up to the idea of using the iCloud photo optimization feature. If I turn it on, I stand to recover around 100 GB. 😅

I'll let the idea stew.

How hard will it be to order one of these at launch? I’m eyeing a red mini on Verizon at base storage but I’m not sure how inventory is at launch these days.
I’m also paranoid after the 3080 launch about bots scooping up inventory.

The more I think of it, the more I am getting tempted to buy the mini -
I am currently using iPhone X, the screen size is only 0.4 inches smaller on mini when compared to X.
But mini has the best PPI among all the 12 models announced.

Also, my usage is very typical; I use iPad for all media, work and social media consumption. When moving, I hotspot it with iPhone and enjoy the larger screen space.

I take lot of casual pictures; Not a pro photographer. And the camera system on mini is exactly the same as 12.

so for my usage, I think it makes more sense to get mini with higher storage than 12.

of-course, if I don't like it..then I have kids waiting for inheritance 😆😆

What are the downsides of choosing the 12 mini over the 12 pro? That’s kinda what I’d like to know other than a better camera.

Battery life, RAM, camera hardware, camera software currently with more to come, brighter screen, frosted glass back and stainless sides over regular glass that’s not as nice if you go caseless.

The camera hardware and software is the best only not the pro max model and not pro. Sadly, this year apple added few features to pro max camera and not the pro model.

It’s interesting to see where we were at 8 years ago with a 5.8 inch device being called a “huge” phone.

Yes just a few years ago 5.5 inches was a "Plus"-sized iPhone, now 5.4 inches is "mini". I don't get Apple's naming systems. I'd personally have gone for this phone as the iPhone 12, then what is the iPhone 12 as "iPhone 12 plus". Then you have consistency with the pro models: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 plus, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max. But what do i know!

While all this is technically accurate (and that page is a nice guide on showing the effects), I’m going to nitpick because this math isn’t a great way to describe the effect, and makes it harder to understand the effects on top of that. Especially since it doesn’t tell you much about things like pixel coverage. The more relevant number is the scaling factor from points to pixels. Since that tells you if downscaling is needed, and the sort of effect you’ll get much more clearly. Using the 6+ example, it’s scaling factor is a hair over 2.6. The Mini is:

Width from pt to px: 2.88
Height from pt to px: 2.881773399

So to make it clear that “exactly 1.15” doesn’t mean a whole lot, one example I can make here is that a black line that’s a single point wide with a white background. On the 6+ you will have two black pixels, and one middle gray (where it’s about 40% white). The iPhone 12 Mini in the same situation will have two black pixels, and one very dark gray one (12% white). So it will look much more like it’s 3 pixels wide, closer to the intent.

This isn’t a perfect example, but you can see that in this case, the Mini could very well have better contrast and appear less fuzzy compared to the 6+ since these blended pixels will be more dominated by a single color, rather than getting multiple colors smeared together.

I find it interesting that the aspect ratio of 1080x2340 is slightly different than the aspect ratio of 375x812. I wonder if that’s an artifact of the pentile layout or not. But pentile displays are a whole other bag of hammers, and partly the reason for jumping to 460px/in.

I will point out that Apple abandoned subpixel AA on iOS long before they did on the Mac. Neither one does it today, so the highlighted is not true in this case. You’ll get grayscale AA, as best as is possible with a pentile OLED display, so there could still be some false color if you look real close from the pentile display’s own pixel blending.

Agreed. At this pixel density, it should be fairly hard to pick out

Now, I’d be more concerned if it turns out the Mini’s non-integer scaling screws up GPU perf somehow.
Thank you for that information. You say Apple abandoned subpixel AA a long time ago but still does grayscale AA. Grayscale AA isn't subpixel AA then? Anti-aliasing (of any sort) was basically what I meant when I clumsily wrote "the system will work with colors".
