Excuse me?
The OP started the thread crafting doom and gloom battery life opinion as fact, before actual battery size was known. There is also the fact that not everyone uses their phone the same, even with many of the same app installed. As such, there can be no declarative one size fits all doom and gloom warning about battery life. That is why I said what I did. Refuting his doom and gloom one size fits all opinion being promoted at fact does not mean I live in a bubble.

I have no more to say on that specific matter.

Currently still using a 7+ and haven't upgraded in years because my use of it has severely dropped..... I went from private practice, where I used my phone constantly, to working for the state in a facility where cell phones of any kind are not allowed. I guess I've been waiting for a reason to upgrade if loss of support doesn't come first. Also like many of you I've gotten tired of carrying around a brick that doesn't fit anywhere, even with less frequent usage of the phone.

Enter the 12 mini which seems to be a relief on the pocketability issue. My only concern is that even with nearly the same screen area size between the 7+ and 12 mini, the different dimensions will make the mini's screen too narrow, so I'm also considering the 12 as it is still a significant improvement in bulkiness.

What may break the tie is one-handed typing, which I've noticed on this thread is the other main reason for the interest in the mini. My question is, even with the 7+ I've gotten around that issue by using the one-handed keyboard function.....has that been discontinued in later models? If it's still a function on the 12, I may just forgo the mini.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'one handed keyboard function'? The functionality of the keyboard is determined by the software, and the size of the phone, but otherwise isn't specific to previous models. Are you referring to the swipe to text feature, where you can type words by sliding your finger across the screen without having to press each individual letter? If so then yes, that feature is present in iOS 14 and all current iPhones.

I think battery life really depends on how you use your phone. My iPhone 8 is currently 3 years old so the battery is old and at 87%. From what I’ve read the 8 has some of the worst battery life. I still only charge my phone once a day most of the time. I sometimes need a top up if I’m using navigation or needing my hotspot.

The new Mini will have better battery life so I think for my use the battery will be just fine. And let’s not forget folks we have two weeks to test it out.

If you go into Settings-General-Keyboard on my 7+ you can turn on the one handed keyboard and choose either right or left hand. The pic below on the right shows the keyboard.

Wait, is that feature in the regular 12?? Having never used a + phone before, I didn’t know it even existed. I already returned my 12, but that may have swayed my decision. 😟.

Edit: Checked on my reg 7 and answered my own question. Bummer. Wish I knew about that prior to my return. Although the worst UI element for me was the Trash in Mail, and the keyboard doesn’t fix that.

Do you mean the Trash icon being too close to Reply? I've screwed that up more than once and you're right, no way to change that.

No, just the reach to the Trash icon in the lower left when you are reading an email. The swipe to delete was always fine for me. That trash icon is just really at the bottommost corner of the screen and has a small hit target.

The more I think about it the more I’m probably going to move from the 11 pro to the 12 mini. The 12 pro is just too big for me to use one handed without straining my hand. I put my SIM back in my 11 Pro temporarily and it just feels much more comfortable. I think going down to the 12 mini might be the best ergonomically.
One handed use is overrated.

Mini fan boys and fan girls overstating the importance of one handed use in this thread. Don't let them fool you, lurker.
Most of the time you have to use a phone one handed, you should probably be focusing on the main task at hand, or taking in your surroundings.

Man those dimensions just sound so appealing. I want that size, but I want the build and specs of my 12 Pro. Shucks. Blasted trade-offs! I’m getting my wife a 12 mini. I plan to go hold one as soon as they’re on display and make a final decision. I’m thinking the features and battery life of my 12 Pro will probably win out though.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. I’d get a 12 Pro mini immediately if they offered it. Just feel like I’m giving up a bit too much if I go mini. But when you think about it, it’s really just battery life and that telephoto lens. Battery life is a problem, but I don’t use the telephoto lens much.

If I can’t handle holding a cup of coffee in one hand at 53 years old to the point where it’s a “major task” I’ve got much bigger problems than what phone to buy.

It’s all personal preference and we should all remember, the reason phones come in many sizes is because they appeal to different people.
