Ming Chin Kuo said 12 Mini may sold not as he would expect, about 15%
Because smaller phones aren't so popular and China market targets bigger phone size
Kuo's initial projections were:
40-45 % iPhone 12
20-25 % iPhone 12 mini
15-20 % iPhone 12 Pro
15-20 % iPhone 12 Pro Max

He later adjusted them to:
30-35 % iPhone 12
15-20 % iPhone 12 mini
30-35 % iPhone 12 Pro
15-20 % iPhone 12 Pro Max

Which so far seems to roughly match the availability.

Pro Max has slipped to 3-4 week ship time in China, even 128GB and 512GB models. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 mini is available for launch day delivery in all colors and configurations. I would say Kuo overestimated iPhone 12 mini demand.

Rumors already talking about iPhone 13 being offered in the same 4 models as the 12.
The lead time for the planning of new iPhone models is more than a year, hence the next-year models are pretty much set in stone at the time the current-year models launch. Major changes based on how the 2020 models are received by consumers may therefore not materialize until the 2022 models.

Most people in the world prefer larger displays. It’s not surprising the iPhone 12 mini remains available for launch day delivery.
Of course the mini buyers are in the minority, but Apple knows that and surely is producing less minis than regular/Pro 12s, based on those expectations. The current availability hence indicates that the mini may be a slower seller even relative to those lower estimates.

Ordered mine, white 64GB! I look forward to it, but am a bit concerned about the PWM flicker, since at least on the regular 12, we found out that Apple did not improve the flicker frequency over the XS or the 11 Pro, so it may still cause the same eye strain/headaches as the previous phones. Will try it out, and return if there are any problems. Fingers crossed!

I sort of wonder if all iPhone sales might be slightly muted this year due to the pandemic.

I would imagine many more people are being a bit conservative with somewhat discretionary spending (like phone upgrades). Also, with so much more working at home going on, the benefits of a top end new mobile device are somewhat lost as well.

I know for myself, that 5g is just a non interest completely. As it is, this year I’ve been on WiFi about 95% of my time (to the point that I scaled back my cell phone plan this year in fact).

Depends on what you do. I'm not real video or music heavy and I'm fine streaming or having my data on iCloud. I'm currently using about 34gb on my iPhone 2020 SE. However since it was "only" $50 more for 128GB I went with that just in case. If it was $100 more I would have stuck with 64GB.
I eventually pre-ordered 128 GB due to the european price
809 eur vs 859 eur
I wanted 64 GB at first then i noticed both are beyond 800 eur lol
Apple are really smart, they got me for spending more

Pre-ordered mine this morning. T-Mobile's excellent trade-in offers led me to order through them, or I would have gone with Apple instead. $535 out of pocket for the 128GB Mini in blue, which isn't a whole lot more than I paid for my 128GB iPhone SE (2017) at its launch.

I'm excited. There's so many iPhone technologies that I've never used before. Haptic touch, OLED screen, Face ID, the list goes on and on. Stuff that most iPhone users take for granted are going to be brand new to me. Kinda bummed I missed out on 3D touch though.

128 GB black mini ordered and scheduled to be delivered on launch day! Can’t wait for this. Going to be a huge upgrade from my 7.

If you buy now, you aren’t getting the holiday return policy, is that correct?

May be nice to wait a couple weeks to take advantage of more time to test/make up mind on keep or not

I always expected the mini to be the slowest seller to start, but it may become a surprise hit down the line. I think a lot of people are interested but want to hold it in their hand and see it with their own eyes. Unlike in previous years, I’m using this purchase as a trial period to see if the mini can work for me. If not I’m keeping my 11 Pro.

The somewhat less-than-red-hot demand for the Mini might also simply be a consequence of its later release. The iPhone 12 advertising blitz and reviews have all come and gone and a lot of people who were hungry for a new phone simply bought the first available models. The fact that sales of the Pro have exceeded expectations bears this out.

This is exactly what I ordered as well ! Congrats
Looks nice with that case.

I went for the blue 256GB for future-proofing, plus AppleCare+ as I’m planning to go case-free again after 3 years of an X kept in leather cases.

My favourite iPhone ever was probably the Jet Black 7 which I used caseless, so with AppleCare I’m going to risk it again! Think it should be OK with the smaller size, lighter weight, and grippier flat aluminium edges and glossy back 👍🏻

Don't talk bad about the 12 mini!!!!!

Kinda hard for folks to prefer smaller displays when the options for them are so limited though.
We go through this debate every year. But the data shows fewer people bought iPhone SE than iPhone 5s. When 4.7" models were available, the demand increasingly skewed towards 5.5" models each year.

Today, the iPhone 12 mini and Pro Max are available for pre-order. The Max shows delivery estimates slipping by 3-4 weeks. While the mini is still available for launch day delivery.
