I have bought an iPhone every year since the beginning. But I’m passing this year I have an iPhone XS Max and the only thing I see different is the camera and that’s not worth $1000+ to shell out. Anyone share this opinion?

If I was making the decision I would want to know what the new phone actually was before deciding.
I passed on the 2016 models. I passed on the 2017 models. I passed on the 2018 models and I will pass on the 2019 models.
As long as Apple continues to make the camera bump larger and larger I will continue to pass.
passing till it gets USB-C or preferably TB3
(i know thunderbolt is very unlikely but it would justify getting maxedxeed out model if you could partition off part as a super fast storage drive, Apple pre-Cook probably would have considering apple already "invented" Target Disk Mode)

I skipped 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and definitely will skip 2019.

I've been buying a new iPhone every year since they were released (for the most part anyway, especially with the upgrade programs through carriers and no contracts started). Even when I was locked in two year contracts with no "upgrade" option, I usually figured out a way to get the latest and greatest. I'm currently using an iPhone X and didn't feel the need to get an upgrade to the newer model when it was released last year. The phones have gotten much more expensive over the years and it's becoming harder to justify dropping over $1000 on a cell phone when mine works perfectly fine.
I'm waiting on the newer OS to release just to see how the X handles it. The only thing that will force my hand is if the phone becomes too slow to use on a regular basis (I use my phone a lot for work and other small tasks). If the newer OS doesn't slow the phone down dramatically with the release of the new phone, then I'll be sticking with this one (unless there's some sort of ground breaking feature on the new model that would drastically improve my user experience). But in reality, I doubt we'll see anything ground breaking on the new model (I think USB-C / TB3 would be the biggest change that can happen at this point)

I have bought 4 of the iPhones in total. Never got why you'd upgrade every single year. Seems a waste of money, a perfectly good phone and materials. I'm expecting my 8 to last for a long time.
Much rather spend that money on a new iMac once they get a big makeover. Or any Mac actually. Macs are fun. iPhones are just appliances.
I'm in. On annual upgrade program with Verizon. I like new iPhones annually! My only vice in life.
I have that vice and sugary drinks.
If the camera is significantly better than my MAX, I will upgrade to the Pro 11.
I haven't purchased an iPhone every year for myself. I purchased in this order, 2g, 4s, 5s, 6s Plus, SE.
The new iPhones are so expensive and have little reason for me to get them over my SE, imo.
Back when Apple put them on clearance, I purchased another SE as a back up when my current SE dies.
So, I will most likely not get the 2019 iPhone, unless a new cheaper and/or smaller model gets released.

I want to pay off and outright own my XS Max so nope. Even it the 2019 phone is better in every way, I don't need anything else from my current phone.
My 7+ still does what I need it to do. But after 2 years, the battery needs replacing, which I’m doing tomorrow. I hope.
I’ll buy my iPhone cash. I’ve been upgrading my iPhones every year. Sell them and pay the difference. I normally get between 600-800 depending on the condition.

Or if somebody purchased XS last year, they likely wouldn't upgrade every year. I’d say it also depends on if someone has an older model iPhone (6/6s/7), then they’re more inclined to maybe upgrade if they see the value in the 2019 iPhone.

The bigger decision I'm having to make is sticking with iOS or switching to android. I've only owned an iPhone since the 4 but many of my friends and family have switched to the s10+ and they have no regrets. Anyone else facing this dilemma?

I just got an XR 3 months ago (great battery life!) so I'm passing. I'm not that tempted by new phone releases anymore. I upgrade when I want to.
That bump will quickly be forgotten if the camera is as good as expected and why mention 5G it’s useless at this point.
What good would having 5G when it will not be available in most places for years.

My answer is "I don't know and will wait until the refreshes are announced before thinking seriously about it".
Not having 5G available in most countries in 2019 will make it super easy to live with it missing. Folks will endure the known LTE speeds that they came to appreciate for a while already - and hardly anybody can be seen here complaining about network speeds.
