So many Teslas on the road here, they dwarf any other EV on the road from what I can see. Because of the tech, especially the FSD, it is the only EV I would even look at. I like the look of the Tesla's but they are not the nicest looking EV's on the road in my opinion. Really love the look of the Cadillacs. View attachment 2522838
I’m in the NY area and the model 3 and Y dominate. I’m not a fan of any Cadillac. But I agree in the sentiment. I know people who were serial Caddy buyers.

There are pluses and minuses for the look of every vehicle. To me Tesla makes the best ev from a technology standpoint. As far as looks go, I like the refreshed 2026 Model Y.

The Y can be hit and miss. I really like the one I just got with black rims and roof rack. The black rims with white paint really make the Y pop in my opinion. Again all subjective. I am not sold on the new design of the Y. I have not seen a lot of them around and they generally seem to be in a colour I am not a big fan of the stealth grey colour which is pretty much the only colour I can remember seeing for the new Y. Same with the rims, seems only 2 options on the website.

But ultimately it comes down to the tech and I think Tesla has it nailed down. I have CarPlay in my Outback and it feels so kidsy in comparison. Tesla feels much more refined and is butter smooth navigating it. The only thing I wish is some multi tasking with the browser. I often listen to lectures or debates on YouTube and load them up via the browser to listen while I drive. If I minimize the browser it will still play, till I leave the car, when I come back in and load up the browser it is a new instance, what I had running is gone. Might be I am doing something wrong, but as of right now that is my only annoyance with it.

No wireless CarPlay is another drawback with Tesla for me. I get how great you all think Tesla is (sometimes I think this thread should be called the Tesla thread!) but there are plenty of other choices.

It’s a bit like pre EV’s. Generally only American cars sold in America as well as quite a few European models. Where as in Europe they were nowhere to be seen. I think that’s where we are heading.

Basically in Europe we have different tastes and design preferences.
Tesla have been one of the most successful US automotive brands in Europe pre 2025. Now not so much.

Are the lectures/debates available on YouTube Music?

Seems like it. Model 3 used to be everywhere for a while. Now.. I don't think I have seen one in months. Model Y though is still around in decent numbers.

Most EVs in town appear to be hybrids these days. Decent stepping stone until we get truly better batteries I reckon.

I suppose Tesla fell out of favour not just because Elon but because they kept discounting their vehicles, ruining resale value.

I think Teslas look better in dark colors, the greys and blacks. I like Carplay, I am big fan, but I don't miss it in the Telsa. The nav app is very good and the route planning is very well integrated into the vehicle functions. There has been rumors that the fleet will start supplying real time data, in the vein of waze to cars in the same area. The difference is using AI the cameras can pick something up and relay it to those Teslas in the area without human intervention.

As far as the browser I don't have enough knowledge to comment. The car goes asleep after you leave it. My supposition is that includes the computers that drive the infotainment. I'm guessing the browser loses track of where it is then the vehicle goes to sleep and I don't think there is any way around it.

The man most definitely, and not just him. Discounting the vehicles doesn't help either, stability is better for the market and the same for lease operators not have the price go up/down more than a yo-yo. But mostly they aren't that good a car, they are so many alternatives to get. The network hasn't had an advantage for say the last five years. We had standardisation here already. But yes, there is consumer choice. Got to say visual styling is another factor, and whilst build quality improved, it's not to the standard most are accustomed to, and let's not even begin about luxury levels. Just different tastes all-round. However, it certainly is a value for money option. Both new and second hand, it is challenging to get the same elsewhere that is cheaper.

I think batteries are fine for 99% of people. Who doesn’t stop once every 300 miles? I think hybrids are the worst of both worlds. I’d not buy one.

Hybrids are great if you live in cold places...they have the largest chance of catching on fire compared to gas cars and EVs, so you can keep yourself warm!

Hybrids have their uses. I didn’t want one but I got one; Porsche Panamera. I travel across Europe a lot. Typically twice a month through four countries. I want to be a bit more green than my former 5.0V8 supercharged Range Rover but no EV on the market can make the trip on one go.

In my specific case I have a cross channel sea ferry in between and despite having to be there an hour in advance none of the four possible routes. Have chargers in the waiting area. So making an extra stop purely to charge didn’t make sense.

The Panamera plugin ehybrid is a good option. It can do the distance in one. I can charge at our homes for next to nothing. And drive into any clean air zone. And do it in style, luxury and with some oomph.

Dunno - silent gliding around in town and having proper range on the Autobahn at higher speeds so as to not be pushed into the slow lane sounds like a good deal to me?

Most people here in the city don't have their own charging spot, it's all street parking and communal parking garages. I don't think the range issue is really about those fabled several hundred mile in one go trips. It's about how often during the week you have to top up in day-to-day driving and how much charge management is needed for that if you have to drive to a public charger and sit there 30 mins or more.

As opposed to just driving over to the petrol station and filling up the tank, five minutes in and out most days. :)

Probably the only thing that I will miss from our Sorento is the distance on a full fill up. We would get anywhere from 595 - 630 miles on a full tank. Was great when we first got it and drove to Florida a few times a year, but we don’t drive like that anymore.

I think there are plenty of overnight places to charge in the City’s for those who don’t have a driveway. Personally I’d never buy a house without one. Even when I was in my 20’s and bought my first flat I made sure it had a parking spot.

Most EV owners just charge up at night whilst they are sleeping. So much more convenient than driving to a petrol station to fill up. I still fill up Mrs AFB car about 4 times a year. Feels like I’m going back to the dark ages!

Can do that with an EV as well. No problem at all. Have done that many a time.

In most places it is about 50/50. Arguably, those without their own charging spot aren't the ones with cars that have this kind of expense anyway.

If you actually have to drive to a public charger you are doing something wrong, that is the word of inexperience. Typically one should practice ABC - Always Be Charging at any opportunity. Then you never have to go somewhere just to charge and sit there.

You are forgetting that most EVs start the day with a full tank. Also when filling you don't have to wait with it. So that five minutes to fill it (doesn't include paying, walking to the building, getting a coffee, going to the WC) is immediately won by an EV driver. The rest you can do WHILST it is being filled.

Crazy Tariffs and VAT regulations were designed to shut out US car brands for decades.

Hybrids are the best choice for many where charging infrastructure is lacking. In US it's pretty sad with overcrowding, chargers off line, and more expensive than buying a tank gas in many areas. Charging in winter or in summer sucks for average driver. Plus Ev's cost more to operate if you can't home charge now, Oil cartels win again.

I don’t think that was ever the issue. Most traditional US cars are huge. Not suited to European roads.
Plus the styling and handling doesn’t suit our more refined tastes.
Simple search will show the the history of the issue. Refine tastes? wow...

Yes but home charging costs a fraction of rapid charging. Thats where something like 90% of all EV charging is done. I’m lucky in that I can charge at work, so basically for free.

You also have to factor in lower or non existent service charges. That helps with the annual running costs.

Just the higher depreciation costs that are the big issue.

Tariffs are not the big issue. Never have been. What’s the most popular US vehicle? Some sort of pick up truck most likely. Over here you very rarely see one. They are just to big to park and drive.

The established European brands have had a stranglehold on our market, but certain Asian brands.

Tesla made good progress and is probably the most popular US car. But the foot in mouth disease hasn’t done their brand any favours. Whenever I speak to a Tesla driver they are always quick to point out they bought it before certain things were said by a certain person. Shame.

I’ll be keeping my BMW for a few more years. But my next car will be European or Asian I suspect.

The most popular US vehicle is the model Y. And to be honest what comes out of the CEO’s’ mouth is irrelevant to me. I’m not moving out of the US because the pres. said some things.

But Tesla has managed to bump my favorites list for bmw down to #2.

Been awhile since I posted here - but our 2018 Tesla Model 3 is still going strong. 98,000 miles (got it with 32,000 miles used in 2022).

We've been so happy with our Tesla that we got another Model 3 in mid 2024, right before things got really hot - lol. My wife prefers the 2018 so she drives that and I drive the 2024. Absolutely loving it.

Not so happy about the cost of electricity going through the roof...

Took my 2024 on a trip from California to Iowa and back (almost 4000 miles) - endured 10F Wyoming temperatures a lot better than I expected (first time driving an EV in freezing weather).

Seeing new Model Ys on the road here every day... (Northern California).

Solar not an option? I’d love it if I had the cash and the roof wasn’t coming up for replacement.

My wife and I both work and are very mobile - so we rent a tiny apartment (and pay more than most mortgages for the privilege to rent here in Northern California). Hoping our lives will settle down someday. My dream house will be solar and backup batteries to run all day!

I have 2.2 kWh of Anker batteries offloading our electrical usage during peak hours (3pm-midnight). But ... no solar... someday.

Our apartment complex recently raised level 2 EV charging to $.85/kWh. :p.
