I have an 8 Plus, which I actually consider to be concurrent with the X rather than pre-X, but whatever. I intend to keep it because, well, who really needs a brand new flagship phone every year? For me it's not a question of why I should keep my phone, it's why do I need to replace it? The 2018 iPhones don't seem to offer anything significant to someone with a 2017 phone, and that's not surprising.

I am for sure not keeping my pre-X phone.

Like you I have the 8 plus. I originally ordered the X, but when I realized that the net screen will be less than the 8 plus (especially in the width) i canceled my X order and got the 8 plus.

But I have to say my 8 plus and wife's 8 had some of the worst cell phone receptions of phones we had over they years. When I got my first mobile phone in 1990's it was brick with > 1 lbs, had to be charged several times a day and talk time was something like 20 to 30 minutes (which we mostly didn't need since it was hugely expensive). But in 1990's and early 2000's the number one focus of testing was how good the reception is and if you can make calls in remote areas with low signal.

Today the focus is on how smart a phone is (in many cases much smarter, than the owner), but it seems the basics have been forgotten. I want to be able to make and receive calls as well send and receive text in low signal areas (which I am frequently in as an outdoor enthusiast).

For me between 3G, 4, 5, 6, 7 Plus and 8 Plus the 8 is clearly the lowest performer in that category. With the forecast of the new phone having improved antenna and modem, this will be my main reason to upgrade to the XS plus.

Than add the this time the really bigger screen, Face ID and better camera and I give you a clear I am in ...

I have a 7 in Jet Black - had it since it came out. Keeping it purely for its design and the way it looks. I think the Jet black iPhone is the best looking iPhone to date. The shiny all black aluminum body has such a classic look that would never get old. Even without all of the new features of the 8, x, etc., it would age to be a sick looking basic phone over the years if kept clean. I may even get a Jet Black iPhone 7+ just for fun. If I plan to make any changes I may opt for an Apple Watch so my 7 spends less time in my hands. I don't really care for all of the new features anymore. I just want a reliable phone for calls and text. Everything else can wait while I enjoy the freedom from being too connected.

I went for the 8 Plus last year, mostly because I wanted to stand off and observe. Yeah, I knew there’d be initial hands-on videos etc, but I was mostly interested in the longer term opinions and whether those who took the plunge came to regret it or not.

Face ID - before making the jump I wanted to know that it would work well and not drive me insane. I’m now satisfied from what I’ve seen and read that the positives far outweigh any drawbacks. The vast majority of the negative comments are either extremely nit-picky or ill informed. The overwhelming majority of users say that they almost forget it exists because it’s so seamless to use.

The notch - I didn’t like it when I first saw the design and there was no way I was pre-ordering without the opportunity to spend some time handling and using the phone to see how noticeable it was. As I suspected, it’s a total non-issue.

Screen size - although Apple were touting the X as having a larger display than the Plus models, anybody could see that was a half truth. I wanted to see what Plus users thought after making the change. As it turns out, I’m now no longer bothered by this. The first time I held an iPhone X I knew it was a much better form factor for me and I tried a range of activities on the phone and realised I was fine with the size.

The price - in my opinion, the iPhone X is overpriced. But then, iPhones always have been. I wasn’t averse to spending the money - but the price tag was actually the deciding factor in holding off. Had it been priced lower - even by only £100 - I would probably have thrown caution to the wind and gone with the X despite the above concerns.

So, I will be selling my 8 Plus and going for the 5.8” Xs.

I have an iPhone 8. I held off buying the X for two reasons. One, the X was a first generation device. It had a lot of new tech that I wasn't sure of. Second, the price. The X retails for over $1500 in my country. I had the money, I liked the design and size but it just didn't make sense to put so much money in a device that would be replaced two years down the line. The iPhone 8 was mature device with almost the same specs as the X. Though I would've preferred a larger display, the 8 plus was unwieldy.

Now that most smartphones have embraced the notch and bezel less display, I have my eyes on the 5.8" XS and the 6.1" LCD. If the 5.8" XS isn't priced crazy like last year I will go for it. If it is again priced too high, I will go for the 6.1" LCD instead. If the 6.1" LCD has too many compromises compared to the OLED models, then I will stick to my 8 for another year and upgrade in 2019

I wouldn't mind getting a Red 8 Plus at a better price. It'll be a great upgrade from my 6S Plus. :)

Except, the iPhone 8 Product Red will likely be discontinued with the announcement of the new iPhones in a few weeks, being its just a limited time offer in this color as it is. Unless a carrier offers it, then you _won’t_ be able to purchase it from Apple.

Ah good point!

That might throw a wrench in my plan. :)

I’m on a 6S with a fresh battery and still don’t feel like I have to upgrade. iOS 12 has made it snappier than it ever felt on iOS 11 so I’m finding it hard to think of why I should upgrade. I mean I want an iPhone XS, it’s the latest shiny phone from Apple, but do I really need it? That’s what I keep asking myself. Is it really worth paying 1k for when my 6S is still more than doing its job? It doesn’t feel slow or anything so I don’t know if I could justify it other than for the fancy new hardware, which also has its drawbacks because of that notch and FaceID not being as good as TouchID (for me). In fact, I recently used the iOS 12 beta on an X that I ended up returning and my 6S actually felt snappier in areas compared to the X. The X would randomly stutter when swiping down Control Centre whereas on my 6S it doesn’t. Double pressing the home button to enter multitasking also feels snappier and smoother on my 6S compared to swiping on the X. I honestly felt like I downgraded in some ways and felt as though I was robbed of 1k which was strange.

It’s really hard to justify the upgrade because of that. My 6S is still snappy 3 years later and doesn’t feel anywhere near sluggish thanks to iOS 12, so I’d just be upgrading for the sake of having something ‘new’ to play with more than anything. It’s kind of silly to upgrade every year or two these days anyway (which I used to do) and that’s the point where I’m at now. A 3 year old chip from Apple still holds up strongly today, and as I said last years X barely feels that much snappier, if at all, compared to my 3 year old iPhone so it would feel like a waste of money.

I have the iPhone 7 Plus. It ran its course. It’s doing that thing where when I make calls I can’t hear anybody. And the speaker phone symbol is blocked out (Apple said they cannot do anything). So I have to upgrade.

In my mind I’m thinking I should upgrade to the X becsuse I don’t see the point to the Xs. I feel like the upgrades would be minimal. And maybe I can get a better deal. I’m going to wait until the key note. But I’m really thinking nothing is spectacular about the phone except for the color. And possible better reception.

And maybe Apple will change the design next year.

My 7+ still runs like a champ, and honestly, I don't care for OLED screens.

Well, I likely don’t KNOW the difference. Can someone enlighten me? Pros/cons?

I got an X last year and traded down to an 8, which I love.

I won’t upgrade to the new phone because (a) Touch ID (b) price (c) how much better could it realistically be. In my view we’ve reached peak iPhone. It’s madness (for me) to spend hundreds of pounds a year upgrading when I already have a fantastically good device.

When my 8 dies, I’ll see what’s out there.

It’s going to take a lot of will-power not to upgrade to the Apple Watch 4, though.

Well the watch is almost a certainty for me as well. I’m still on the fence about the phone for sure.

You know, I have a LOT of problems with cell phone reception where I live, and I never considered that it could possibly be my 8+, even though I’m sitting here with 2 bars of LTE on my 2018 iPad and 1 on the 8+ (5 inches away from one another).

The thought has flitted across my mind once or twice, but I just never really thought that was it. Now I wonder.

I can say since the 6s, I have had WiFi/LTE reception issues on my iPhones. Rarely before that. I blame Apple’s war with Qualcomm and their own tactics in tweaking the modem’s reception.

I get no LTE reception at all during certain points in my commute with the 7+, which did not happen with my Moto Android phone.

So it would not surprise me if your 8+ has these same problems. Interestingly, my iPad Pro I had the same connection issues as with the 2018 iPad. I am not surprised.

/rant on:

This is why I am so annoyed at the potential specs for the 6.1. If the rumors are what arrives, it will be a huge waste of money imo.
No one should have shoddy, unpredictable cellular connections regardless of what iPhone they purchase: A better modem should not be a luxury.

/rant off

I still love everything about my 6S+, except for the camera. Comparing it to my husband’s Pixel 2, I am quite jealous. I’ll be eyeing the XS+ if it’s under $1000.

I have an x but couldn’t toss my 7plus

I love the matte black & the horizontal dual cam aesthetic. The screen feels bigger too in most situations even tho it’s 5.5 vs 5.8 because of aspect ratio. And it’s nice having a p3 led screen on top of oled. And 2nd gen Touch ID.

Replaced the screen cause it shattered before I got my x and paid full price for it so I didn’t think I’d see return in selling it vs keeping it as a backup in case I ever ruined my X cause I don’t think I’d wanna pay $549+tax for another vs ride out this iPhone that’s good enough too

Got a new battery for it the other day! It’s like a new device

I have a 6/64g and an upgrade is a must. May go with an 8 next month, possibly an X. 256g either way. 6 has to go.

Last week in an airport someone ran into me and the 6 went flying. I have a magpul case on it - drops were no issue before. This time it did a 360 and a 180 and landed on the composite floor on the upper right corner. Screen is finished.

And Im almost tapped out for stirage. I have a lot of travel apps including maps.me with a lot of offline maps loaded for travel. And for a trip traveling really light with the 6 and leaving the iPad home I sometimes want to load 4 or 5 movies. That is pushing it with 64g.

Touch ID is ok with me. Would be great if that ended being a virtual under the screen feature in the future, in addition to face.

This. I ooh when I see the matte 7+ I handed down to my wife when I take the case off. It’s the best looking iPhone to me. It was my first + model and I sorta miss the size so I’m considering the XS+

I’m not sure if she wants to upgrade this month and if she does, I would have to think twice before selling it.

Got a 7 probably would keep it for another year, If my battery life comfortably lasted me a day.

But I love the X design and new tech so I'll be changing this year, had my 7 for 2 years nearly.

But then XS price might just convince me its not worth it, I dont use my phone enough to justify a crazy price tag. Its just lust for new tech.

I have the 10 and do not plan on switching because I cannot see how the new ones will be better than the one I have already. Plus I am loving that I have paid the balance way down. If I turn it in that means I am starting all over and it is like I leased this phone for a year. I don't want to turn this phone in

I’m keeping my iPhone 7 128 matt black until it breaks or feels too slow - more likely it’ll be when 5g networks come out in the uk.

So, why?:
  • iOS 12 even as a late beta is very fast on this phone
  • I’m trying to use my phone less (and failing badly!). I don’t need a new shiny phone that hooks me in even more
  • At the moment everything on the newer phones feels ‘nice to have’ and not ‘must haves: Face ID, new gestures, wireless charging, bigger screen, better camera and faster processor - all nice but I don’t feel that I’m missing out too much right now (though I would love a dual lens camera & I’m happy to jump on the wireless charging wagon when pads are common in coffee shops etc)
  • I’m not sold on losing the home button. Using the gestures on then X feels slower to me and a step back in usability. I’m happy to wait to see how this plays out in the mass market ie with the bound to sell lots 6.1 LCD phone
  • I can’t justify the expense. The prices are getting crazy. And £750 for this phone felt crazy enough.
Finally, it’s telling that if I ever broke/lost this phone, I’d probably get an SE!

Technically, they will be improved over your current iPhone X, it just has more of a matter of do you appreciate the upgraded features that will be for the 2018 iPhone X models or not. But either way, internal specifications and camera upgrades are a minimum that will be improved, but ‘Better’ is always debatable term.

I've always had a hard time understanding this rationale. You truly can't think of a single possible improvement?

-ProMotion display
-Faster/more accurate FaceID
-Better camera
-Better processor
-Better screen technology
-Better battery technology (still waiting for that breakthrough)
-Who knows what else

At this point sure, everything's incremental, but the phones can still certainly get better.

I remember when people said they couldn't imagine how they could improve upon the iPhone 4, and here we are, far, far beyond what that phone offered...

Im not made out of money to constantly upgrade. If my iphone is working and Apple provides full suport for it, then i will continue to use till it dies and i need a new one.

Fine with my 8 unless they come out with a new smaller phone. I'm looking to downgrade size but don't want an old SE.
