Im not made out of money to constantly upgrade. If my iphone is working and Apple provides full suport for it, then i will continue to use till it dies and i need a new one.

That’s fair. And that’s what is great about Apple, almost five years of iOS support allows the consumer to keep their devices longer for those are not on the annual upgrade cycle or don’t care to.

I've always had a hard time understanding this rationale. You truly can't think of a single possible improvement?

-ProMotion display
-Faster/more accurate FaceID
-Better camera
-Better processor
-Better screen technology
-Better battery technology (still waiting for that breakthrough)
-Who knows what else

At this point sure, everything's incremental, but the phones can still certainly get better.

I remember when people said they couldn't imagine how they could improve upon the iPhone 4, and here we are, far, far beyond what that phone offered...

It’s like adding adding hot sauce to something that’s already good. Don’t get me wrong we all would love a better camera. Faster processor and and all of that. But still. After some time. To me. You don’t really feel the difference.

I dont want to lose Touch ID and even though this is my first year on Apple Upgrade Program I think I'm going to sit out this model year and just get a new Apple Watch instead.

It’s a matter of whether the improvements that come in just one year are worth several hundred dollars or more, and frankly, they almost never are. I have nothing against anyone who chooses to upgrade annually but it’s an indulgence which is almost always motivated by a desire to have the newest toy.

You talk about what a big leap there’s been since the iPhone 4, but that’s exactly the point. Hang on to a phone for a few years and you get a significant improvement for your money. Upgrade every year and it doesn’t seem like you’re getting that much. But again, I’m not judging. People have a right to spend their money on whatever makes them happy.

I'm on a 5S, which is running fine. I'll upgrade if they upgrade the SE to an edge-to-edge screen, and give it a better camera. Or make an X mini.
My 2 yr old SE works fine, and I love it. Will keep it if nothing I want comes.
But I know I probably won’t resist a new upgraded SE (X-Mini), especially without bezels.

#1 reason from my family members is they see no need to replace their iPhone 6/6s/7/8

“They work fine, they do everything I need, I prefer Touch ID, I like the button, I have no reason to get a new phone, I don’t need a new phone, don’t want a new phone” etc etc

I’m the outlier with my phone fetish haha

I think beyond all the improvements that come with the 2019 models (debuting next month), it’s going to be VERY challenging for Apple to convince consumers, businesses, and government purchases that these models are worth several hundred dollars or more.

This is even more challenging given the performance and speed improvements for older models as far back as the iPhone 5S (grey market sellers thank you Apple).

Further to his is for Apple to prove lesser security failure of FaceID (1/50million unless genetically related) and faster performance of FaceID. I’ve tried the iPhone X for 14 days as my only iPhone, and even with accessibility to reduce unlock animation, it was still slower than TouchID.

I just got my iPhone SE's battery replaced. It's 2 years, and 3 months.......and 100% awesome.

I'd consider upgrading if rumours pointed to an SE2 release, but no small screen iPhone seems to be coming, so I'll just keep this SE for another 2 years and see what happens. :)

I just got a new battery in my 7 from Apple and it works just fine for my needs. I have reached a point where my phone does all I want it to, i'm not sold on OLED phones and being in a wheelchair I don't need bigger or more fragile phones either when I'm out and about, Its to easy to drop as it is and I don't care about bezels and yes I know tech marches forward but I really like touch ID still. I browse on my 2017 iMac and iPad, so a new iPad may be in the works... but saying that my Air 2 is still working well tbh.

I'm still using the 7 Plus. I likely will not move forward with Apple.

My reasons are kind of petty.

One, Bluetooth 5.0 and higher will not connect to my car radio. I don't feel like replacing it at all, so I won't unless I absolutely have to.

Two, I like jet black. It's my second favorite iPhone after the blue 5c. The colors now are ho hum to me.

Three, I use Android as my daily driver and enjoy the headphone jack. I just play music through the 7 Plus in my car with YouTube red downloads. My V30+ won't connect due to BT 5.0.

And finally four, I like Touch ID.

Can someone explain the difference in the OLED screens vs the other? I know - I’m way behind here; just trying to get up to speed. ;-p

Most likely keeping my 8+. It is working perfectly and honestly the cost of new phones vs the improvements you receive. It just isn’t worth it.

If no dual SIM option or flagship phone without PWM then I’ll probably stay with my 8. At the moment, it’s wait and see.

I have an 8+ and I haven’t seen or heard anything in the rumors or leaks that would entice me to the largest new iPhone. The 8+ does everything I need it to do and is plenty fast for the moment. I am salivating, however, waiting for the new iPads and new watch. I use those all the time and will immediately jump on those bandwagons.

Hi there,

I'm not an expert, but this is my understanding below:

So the OLED screens are known as 'Super Retina' (by Apple) and have more pixels per inch making the screen feel even more clearer than those in the Plus.

OLED also makes colours brighter and more vivid - including black.

Also OLED only needs to power pixels that are being used. So if you have lots of black pixels on your screen, they're not drawing any power (or at least a minuscule amount).

This is a big reason why many iPhone users want a dark mode. That and that white (and other light UI colours) can be very bright and vivid on OLED screens. And of course, iOS uses quite a lot of white...

Finally, I believe that how OLED screens are manufactured means that you can cut, shape and curve them i.e. they make the design of the X possible - you can't quite do the same thing with LED screens as you can with OLED.

I’m on a 6S with a fresh battery and still don’t feel like I have to upgrade. .....
Totally agree with your post. My 6S runs perfectly well despite the fact I got the 16GB version. iOS12 is a great improvement, performance wise, over iOS11.

My battery life is ok. I must remember to take advantage of the cheap replacement before the year ends, as that's when the offer ends.

iPhone 8+ runs as smooth as the day I bought it, and I still have 20GB left on the 64G size. I was hanging out with some friends last week, including two doctors, lawyers, etc, (so high income people), and I was the only person with a phone that was newer than a 7. People don't seem to be upgrading these phones that often anymore. My iPad and Macbook both need updating, and I may end up spending $3,000 on these and waiting a year on the iPhone.

Or I may buy the new iPhone. I'm less and less interested in the new 6.1" - I may go for the Xs+, but who knows

The only serious improvement going forward has to be the camera...
And then the 'Apple AR glass' will take over...!

Over last few days I've considered keeping my 7 and probably would if I had better battery life.

I kinda feel like I don't use my phone enough to justify a new one yet, when this one still works. And 128GB and thus I likely won't be forced to opt for 256GB.

But on Wednesday I'll likely be itching to preorder.

I have an 8 and it more than meets my needs. Unless there is really some kind of new must have feature I am fine with what I have.

Wife and I still on our 6 models. Battery refresh and nuke and pave last year made a huge difference. See no need to replace them. Perfectly adequate.

I’m on the fence. The 6.1 and 6.5 iPhones are not an option as that size is frankly ridiculous. Therefore the 5.8 is the only option. I’m sure it will be sexy, but I don’t know if it’s really going to be worth an extra £50 or so a month over my iPhone 7 with a sim only contract which does everything completely fine.

Particularly if the choice is between 64gb (not quite enough) and 256gb (absurd)
