Oh, thank you for making this thread. I have a bit of a dilemma. I have a jet black 7 plus, which I love, which I wasn't planning on upgrading (I just thought I'd get the battery replaced).

I'm going to be moving back to the UK next month and will not be rich. The prices in the UK are much higher than Japan (at least they feel like it) and I have a stash of Yen I've saved for Apple goods, but nothing really back home. I'm wondering how long you think a 7 plus would be good for? Would it be more sensible to upgrade now so I can 'reset my AC' etc as my phone will be 2 years old soon? My phone is/will be sim free so I can get a cheap plan at least when I get back. Also, being Japan, any phones sold here have the shuttle sound on the camera.

I'd be grateful for another opinion...

Honestly, I only upgrade iPhones every few years anyway. I went 2G —> 3GS —> 5 —> SE —> 7. I only got the 7 because I got a good deal on it and needed a second phone for work. I’m very happy with my SE and 7, so unless I find a stellar deal on a newer phone, I’ll keep these for a few years and then upgrade :)

Have a 7plus 128gb and dont see myself update pretty soon... I mean what the hell for? It works perfectly fine...Takes some great pictures and probably will replace the battery next year if that is possible. Also dont really like the notch style design apple has come up with and i am not a fan of face id in its early stages.Hope to see some more flexibility, perhaps greater angle on the true depth camera.
Will update when time comes but i am not in a hurry. The new airpods plus the homepod for me this year.

Me… I won't pay 1200 EUR for an iPhone. Never ever. I am not willing to pay that much. I would consider buying a device priced similarly to my 5S when is was new (a little bit more). My limit is 20.000 CZK / 800 EUR.

Have you taken advantage of the £25 (or whatever it is in your country) battery replacement offer? Until end of the year.
I had my phone replaced due a fault a few months back, my battery's at 99%.
I've never been happy with the battery tbh

I like the X, but price will definitely play a factor in whether I go for it after some thinking.

Sitting on my VZW 6S+ and ATTWS 6S for now, they offer what I need for now. The feature that will be in my next smartphone is the Broadcom BCM47755 GPS (L5) chip. The feature that will likely be in my next smartphone is a chipset that supports TMo's new 600 frequencies, with TMo already roaming on ATTWS's Band 12 now they might be one of my new carriers...

I had (lost) a X and now am using my old 6+.

I've found that when I use touch ID, I normaly hold the phone in just about the same position as I would use the face ID; something about the placement of the thumb on it. I find this slightly odd.

Point is: Transitioning isn't so bad

(talking myself up for the big day :D )

But I love the X design and new tech so I'll be changing this year, had my 7 for 2 years nearly.

But then XS price might just convince me its not worth it, I dont use my phone enough to justify a crazy price tag. Its just lust for new tech.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Spending another $1,000-1,200 this year isn’t worth it since mine is actually better today vs when I bought it new due to the fact that iOS 12 is all around cleaner than 11. Plus, battery life is better and battery has been babied. Zero scratches and still has that beautiful shine. The 10 was a nice buy.

Fine with my 8 unless they come out with a new smaller phone. I'm looking to downgrade size but don't want an old SE.

iOS 12 has brought a lot of life back to the iPhone SE, actually. Yes it’s old tech but it feels like it’s brand new, out of the box. The A9 is when things improved, along with the increase in RAM. I have one as a secondary device and I enjoy using it more than I did on iOS 11. The only thing is battery life isn’t great as it was on iOS 9... but that’s not a surprise, but still pretty good for such a small battery. I’ve had it for nearly 8 months and health is still at 100%.

I have an SE. Who knows, it's my disposable phone. If there are good deals on iPhone 8's on eBay I might upgrade to an 8. But I sure as hell am not upgrading to the brand new releases.

I am for sure not keeping my pre-X phone.

Like you I have the 8 plus. I originally ordered the X, but when I realized that the net screen will be less than the 8 plus (especially in the width) i canceled my X order and got the 8 plus.

But I have to say my 8 plus and wife's 8 had some of the worst cell phone receptions of phones we had over they years. When I got my first mobile phone in 1990's it was brick with > 1 lbs, had to be charged several times a day and talk time was something like 20 to 30 minutes (which we mostly didn't need since it was hugely expensive). But in 1990's and early 2000's the number one focus of testing was how good the reception is and if you can make calls in remote areas with low signal.

Today the focus is on how smart a phone is (in many cases much smarter, than the owner), but it seems the basics have been forgotten. I want to be able to make and receive calls as well send and receive text in low signal areas (which I am frequently in as an outdoor enthusiast).

For me between 3G, 4, 5, 6, 7 Plus and 8 Plus the 8 is clearly the lowest performer in that category. With the forecast of the new phone having improved antenna and modem, this will be my main reason to upgrade to the XS plus.

Than add the this time the really bigger screen, Face ID and better camera and I give you a clear I am in ...
Sadly I’m in the same position. I had actually even tried the Qualcomm version of the unlocked IPhone 8 Plus first and found the hard way that Apple must have handicapped it a bit too much to bring it down to the level of the intel modems, because call quality was so horrible on it. I made sure to get an Intel AT&T’s version during my exchange just to see if there would be any improvement.

I love everything about my two 8 Pluses. Except for modem performance.

I had an iPhone X for a month around the extended holiday return period. I liked it but not as much as I like the 8 Plus design. I prefer Touch ID and LCD. I did not like Apple’s implementation of the OLED display. It gave me eye strain.

So I got two 8 Pluses intending to keep them until they fall apart. I got my silver one for only $600 thanks to trading in a 7 Plus that was acting a bit wonky and going out of warranty.

I paid full price for the Product Red 8 Plus with Apple Care Plus a few months later. I’m going to keep the red 8 Plus. Reading ebooks on the loveliest LCD display I’ve ever seen is a pleasure I don’t intend to give up.

But the silver 8 Plus didn’t get the extended warranty. Trading it in while it’s still in good working order and just within warranty could be advantageous.

With news of better new modems and hope of better call quality and signal retention, I am thinking it would work out to trade in the Silver 8 Plus and give the XS a try and maybe get one last shot at getting some use out of the abandoned and expensive X cases my family got me for Christmas.

Yeah I have a lot of phones. At my age, with my responsibilities and my schedule looking after teens and four elders, playing around with phones is about the only “hobby” I have time and opportunity to indulge. I can afford it for now, but when we’re on retirement income with college tuition to pay, hah, I’ll be making mosaics out of painted elbow macaroni as a hobby. At least then I will likely have leisure time for macaroni art. :D

Yeah but I bought a couple of wireless charging devices and would like to be able to still use them. Set to switch to sprint ASAP and my current 8 doesnt work on their network.

I just got my iPhone SE's battery replaced. It's 2 years, and 3 months.......and 100% awesome.

I'd consider upgrading if rumours pointed to an SE2 release, but no small screen iPhone seems to be coming, so I'll just keep this SE for another 2 years and see what happens. :)
Thinking of doing the same. Fast process?

Sounds like iOS 12 will work well on older devices. New batt+iOS should make it feel new and last a bit longer for me. Holding out for another small phone.

The process was fast. It required me to wait roughly 2 hours, but I needed to make an appointment, and it was done on a weekend. My battery "health" or whatever was 84%, but I was having issues with battery life anyway that they couldn't resolve, so I paid the discounted price offered to owners of iPhone 6/6s/SE owners -- I think it was $29 -- rather than full price.

I’m still hanging on to my 6s. The reason for me is simple: money. The CB analysis doesn’t make sense. My 6s can do everything the X can do. I’m more interested in putting money into updating my iPad Pro

Probably Sticking with my 8: Like having TouchID and the X (and the new replacements) just carry too much of a price premium. Might take a look at the new “entry” one if the price is reasonable.

Going with the Xs+ or what ever they're calling it. Wife doesn't like big phones so got her the X last go around which is perfect for her. I love big phones and was hoping they'd have an X+... and now they will!

I’m holding onto my 7 as long as possible. Removing the home button was a mistake in my opinion. I like having that space at the botttom of the phone to rest my thumb when using with one hand. Having to reach up to swipe down to access the control center is stupid when your thumb is already at the bottom of the device. I can access the control center on the 7 one handed,
need two hands with the X.

Touch ID works. I don’t need, or want to use my face to unlock my phone.

I don’t want a phone larger than the 7. It’s getting ridiculous now with phone sizes.

Apple is becoming too user unfriendly with their phones.

If they update the 8 and rename it SE I’ll upgrade to that, otherwise I’ll be giving android devices consideration when it’s time to upgrade.

I drew the line in the sand when I bought my 8+ for $800. That is the maximum I will pay for a phone anymore. i will also never again pay for more storage. I might be interested in the XC next year when it gets a price reduction when new ones are announced.

It is Apple after all so the XC will probably have some dealbreaker. For me that's most likely the camera. I like my 8+ camera and won't consider anything with a lesser camera an upgrade.I am guessing it will also use 64GB not 128 which is sort of sad. Decided to not upgrade phone and buy AAPL with the $2,000 or so it would have cost to get two new iPhones.

I caved, I have osteoporosis and I'm wheelchair bound and my health took a real hit this year. Decided to treat myself to a iPhone Xs space grey 256GB. That will last for a few years hopefully. iPhone 7 with new battery (replaced at a Apple service centre) to be sold which will probably pay for the Applecare. It is immaculate though so I may get a bit more. :D

I still have a 6s. And I’m happy with it. It works well and the battery is still beyond its 80% mark after three years.
I used to upgrade my iPhone mostly every two years. (3gs > 4s > 5s > 6 > 6s)
I would be interested in updating but Apple doesn’t offer what I’m looking for. A X style iPhone with a screen size of my current phone. Which would have a smaller footprint. If they ever make a seX I will probably buy it. But until then there are no practical reasons for me to buy a new iPhone of the current selection. 7 and 8 are mostly visual updates. And the X are all to big.

I'm keeping my 6s Plus for a while. Apple got caught cheating to make phones slow deliberately, which means that they won't do this again at least for a few years (until they find a new way or a better excuse), so let's enjoy the ride while it lasts.

I'm keeping my 8 because I don't like the way the Control Center is accessed on the X.

I literally have to shift the entire phone just to reach the top right corner. Everything else about the X is better, but the control center is something I use all the time, so I'll stick with the 8 until they come up with something better.
