So I don't understand why the 512 gb? Unless you are doing high photography work or working with very large files or want tons of files on your iPad. I have a iMac and Macbook Pro so went with an upgrade to the iPad Pro 65gb version. All my files are in the cloud so really only need space for the actual applications that I would use on the iPad pro (which aren't resource heavy).

Nobody, 2 years after they have purchased a computing device, has ever said,
  • I have too much storage.
  • My CPU is too fast
  • I wish I had less pixels
  • My bandwidth is too great
Go large! (at least on the storage) :)
I disagree haha! It's the excess is best mentality. I vote get the right amount. Especially if you are never going to use it just save a couple hundred bucks.

What's not to understand? You said it yourself...

"...photography work or working with very large files or want tons of files on your iPad..." and many other reasons.

I have my entire music library on mine as well as movies and also work with photography. 512 was a no brainer.

Not just photography work and work type files, but what about those of us who have a lot of TV series such as Game of Thrones and films which can come in at around 2-4GB each?

And I don't understand why some people assume their usage and circumstances applies to everyone else.

For some, 64GB is the right amount, for others, it might be 512GB. Heck, maybe even 1TB or higher but we don't have those yet.

Exactly.

I always got (get?) beat up for my parenting choices here on MR.... by people without kids. Ye gads, that drives me insane too! LOL (yes, it still is possible for kids to enjoy their iPod Touches without access to safari and wifi 24/7 thank you very much)

What we will be working with, cloud access won't be ideal or always viable. It shouldn't hit a space limit for a few years at least. That is a good thing around here.

No worries! If we all thought the same, the world would be a boring place!

I tend to keep mine until I get a new one, and then I give it to my kids. This way, I pay the :apple: Tax and never have to worry about running out of space or CPU. So, for me, I buy my peace of mind.

As for spending the money on accessories, I got the :apple: Pencil for $40 through exchanging Plenti Points at AT&T, and I got the iPad 10.5 512 Cellular at Best Buy with gift cards that my company gives me for $350 (out of pocket - the other $750 was BB gift cards). I've been saving the BB cards for 18 months, though.

What part of Seattle? I just left there, and now I'm in Charleston, SC for good.

I totally hear you.

I have tons of TV shows and movies with Apple and Vudu. I just stream them. I might download a few if I need offline content if on a flight. So far the 64gb has been good for that.

haha! I totally pay the Apple tax too. But love Apple products. I'm going to wait for the Apple Pencil 2 I think before I upgrade. I've had my old iPad air2 for the last 3 years and 64 was plenty space on it. I'm hoping that the new iPad pro I have will be ok with 64. If there is a strong vote that I should go to the 256 (outside of downloading movies) I'm definitely game. But I could take the $100 extra and just buy the Apple pencil. hehe

BTW, my macbook pro has 128 gb hard drive and that has been working good to. I just have everything in the cloud. Nothing is stored locally.

When we do good work, like completing assignments early, or for better results than expected, they give us points that we can get stuff with, and I turn mine into Best Buy cards (100 points = $100 BB Card, or for my wife, I get her Massage Envy Cards).

Who is in on the vote? Spouse... kids? (When Mrs. thequik asks me, I naturally say... go large!)

Had a full price 256 12.9" but returned it when I saw a 512 12.9" LTE for $1,044. It was returned after 1 day according to the guy at Best Buy.

Love me some open box stuff. Free Apple Care and then some. No regrets.

I went with the 256 but I'm kinda wishing I would have gone with the 512. I'm one of those weirdos who actually uses the camera on their iPad and high-res videos eat a CRAP-TON of space. Also I like to keep a lot of stuff local, like music, some movies, and lots of photos.

I've only had this thing for three weeks and I'm already cracking the 100GB mark.

Lol, been a couple of days and I've filled up 50GB. Only reason it's not higher is because our home internet was acting up last night and was going at 1Mbps when I had planned to queue up and download more comics overnight. Ugh.

Had to necro this thread, but I am still stuck (!) on this. To my defense, I had some workplace emergency these few weeks

Did more calculations and found out that currently, the 1st Gen 12.9 inch models with the worst resale value are surprisingly the "mid range" 128 GB models, and I think the same will occur to the Gen 2 256 GB models when Gen 3 comes. This possibly means better value for getting the 64 GB or 512 GB models since going for 64 GB means getting the cheapest possible while the 512 GB means having the most flexibility and usability of the iPad

Furthermore, personally I want to explore the iPad further; I don't want it just because I want to play my games. I have seen and heard about productivity apps over these months and want to get on in the action real soon instead of just reading about these. There seem to be things to explore too in the iTunes U that I saw during my test run recently. Swift Playgrounds is also another interesting app I heard too. Anyway, it looks like all of these will take up some space, anyone here have a good estimate of these apps' storage usage?

Also, is it possible to stream videos / music from the iPad to other devices on the go (I am ok if additional hardware or software is needed)?

Note, part of the reason for the lower resale on 128GB is the price drop on the 256GB model. If Apple releases a 1TB model next year at the current top price point and makes 512GB mid range, you're gonna see resale value of 512GB get squeezed, too.

Also, the Pro 12.9 256GB Wi-Fi was $1099 on launch and it cost $150 more than the 128GB model. I remember when I checked, price difference on Swappa was ~$100-139 so in terms of absolute dollar value, depreciation on the two models is likely similar.

Theoretically, yes.

Plex allows using the iPhone/iPad as a media server but the problem is it times out like every 10-15 minutes.

These are probably your best bet if you plan on streaming to multiple devices on the go:

RAVPower FileHub Plus, Wireless Travel Router, SD Card Reader USB Portable Hard Drive Companion, DLNA NAS Sharing Media Streamer 6000mAh External Battery Pack + any USB mass storage device

Seagate Wireless Plus 2TB Portable Hard Drive with Built-in WiFi (STCV2000100)

WD 2TB My Passport Wireless Pro Portable External Hard Drive - WIFI USB 3.0 - WDBP2P0020BBK-NESN

Good point, I forgot about that late release of the 256 GB model. Now I think the calculations are kinda useless lol

As for the streaming, I asked as I thought I can put a lot of movies inside my iPad and then have it stream to my DP-X1A (Android based DAP). Idea is to turn the incoming iPad into a pseudo portable wireless hard drive too. What you mentioned and the checks I just did seem to weaken the case for the 512 GB as it appears to be dodgy at best, may as well just put the files straight onto the DP-X1A like what I am doing right now

Seems to me too that the RAVPower is quite popular around here... Let me think about it

Guess, I must be incredibly STUPID then.

Purchased a Pro 12.9 512GB. Will mostly be used for comics downloaded from the internet with my measly 100Mbps connection which is even slower than USB2.

I guess I must be too. Mine is loaded up with movies and TV shows. When I'm sitting in that airline seat, I just don't know what I'm in the mood to watch. Currently have 100 Gbytes of free space.

256GB is perfect for me. With 1TB in Dropbox and another 200GB with Apple AND the upcoming features in iOS 11, I didn't see the need for shelling out additional money. I am rarely in a place with my iPad that doesn't have connectivity. Outside of air travel, I stream most of my video and music. When I do travel, I pre-load my shows to watch on the plane and delete them when I'm done. I have a 2.5 year old, so we take a lot of pictures with our iPhones but I don't really use the iPad to store large image files.

Storage comes down to what's the best fit for each user. 256GB was the goldielocks zone for me.

I usually get the least amount of storage, but went with 512 this time. I don't really care for movies/TV shows or games, but I have 80GB of podcasts on it, all my ebooks, and a bunch of music software..and I still have around 360GB free.

I don't know what I'm going to do with it all, but it's a better problem to have rather than constantly running out of space and having to delete stuff.
