I still think they released the IPP now to allow developers to buy them up and make use of the features coming in iPadOS 15 before normal customers get it in September. Doing it during WWDC would have taken oxygen out of the room for announcing the software features and would have pushed demand up even more for the 2021 IPP compared to the current path where the initial upgrades will have passed and regular users will be encouraged to wait until it is out in September.
Good point. Didn’t think of the developer angle. Then there’s the reviewer angle. It was one occassion where they released new iPads before WWDC, but I can’t recall that time. Nonetheless.. reviewers were in an odd spot, because they were judging it based off the current OS. And during that time it was just iOS.

But majority reviewers headline this year will be… wait for WWDC.

I think they give you 2 weeks to initiate and 2 weeks to return after the initiation? A little trick for online orders.
Wait a min… let me get this straight. I receive an iPad Pro on the 21st… I initiate a return on the last day to do so. Then I get an additional 2 weeks to return the iPad Pro. And during that 2 week period, I could elect to cancel the return?

Yup. I'm not 100% positive it's a full two weeks but I know it's at least one week after the return initiation. You'll definitely have until WWDC to make a final decision even if you receive it on the 21st.

Return shipping allowance varies by store but from experience, I believe most usually give you at least 5-7 days after you submit the RMA. If you don't ship the item back, that automatically cancels the return.

I'm *almost* positive it's 14 days for Apple. I just popped around a few other threads and read that you must ship Apple the items back within 14 days after submitting the return request.

what about iMac,mac mimi?
Previous high end CPU’s available for the Macbook Air, and MacBook Mini were around 65 watt TDP. And the cooling was highly inadequate too.

Well, the M1 is like 20 watt TDP. (I say even less than that) from my own experiences.

Anyways, the cooling of the fanless devices can easily handle the M1. I run demanding games four hours on end. Games that push tons of system ram, and full GPU usage all the time.

The M1 seems to always manage a steady temperatures. I rarely see 90C on my M1 air. It is more like 65-85C while full saturated with heat under demanding loads. Not some easy side scroller games, but PC ports like Metro Exodus, and Rust.

While just using the device normally the M1 will hit maybe 36-37C Maximum. Normally as in, checking emails, YouTube videos, internet browsing, editing text etc.

The M1 is certainly the chip to go
in an iPad. Apple could even knock off a little frequency of that original 3.2Ghz and have a real winner for sure. The M1 has some super single threaded performance. These chips are the way of the future.

Power is efficiency most of the time. And the M1 is overkill for ipadOS, I can see the M1 barely getting worked and running super cool while doing it.

The A14 is 3.0 GHz so that's probably the lowest they would go for the iPad Pro.

Regular users of FCP and Logic Pro is a diverse group since the price is relatively cheap for the quality of the product. Anyone doing intensive work would still want a computer with a fan. Those using it for school and simpler projects, will have the choice of a fanless MBA or iPad Pro depending on their preference.

As for logistics, I'd expect WWDC to show Apple updating iPadOS to be more robust in the file handing arena. They already gave everyone high transfer speeds. Maybe USB-C docks are going to be standard 'must have' items for many people going forward with the iPad Pro line. And I think the hard part (having hardware capable of supporting the apps now on the iPad) has been done with regard to support. One product (FCP for example) that can run on two different form factors, with certain input options available on one but not the other.
Doh! Great point, if there are a significant number of folks running FCP on laptops, yeah why not on the iPP. I wonder what those percentages look like.

Good luck buying a 2021 12.9" iPad for $300 this year.

Counting trade in mine was 370. Did break my rule but not by much. Of course I get veterans discount along with cc. It is hilarious though seeing those who spend close to 2k or in some cases 2.5k on an iPad.

Except that still isn't a valid comparison...

Getting it down to $370 w/ a trade in means you still paid more than $370 as you're still trading in something you own. No different than paying it in cash really except that you're looking at it from the flawed perspective of only counting the cash leaving your bank account. You paid 90% of the iPad cost (Mil Disc is 10%) in cash and treasure so no need to look down on others who've done the same.

It’s just an iPad. Don’t pay more than 300 for one.
You could say that about anything though. Its just a car, don't spend more than $5,000 cash.. They all still get you from point A to point B.

Or, its just a laptop.. $500 bucks is all you need.

This is not a standard iPad. As a $2,500 laptop is not a standard laptop.
