Personally I went with a 256GB model, more than enough for my needs… will apple unveil M1 only apps? (most likely), will you need the 16GB ram for them to function? (probably not) unless you are a serious power user.

Needing 16GB, I reckon, is a guaranteed no. I expect majority of iPad Pro sales will be of the 8GB RAM variety.

Benefit from? Yes.

My working theory is that Apple has some fairly important advances ready to go for iPadOS. My reasoning is that Apple has never advertised DRAM capacity in any iPad ever before the intro of the 2021 iPad Pro. That wasn’t by accident.

There are degrees of difference between iPadOS and macOS and with Big Sur taking the focus last year, this new iPad Pro tells me that iPadOS will have the focus this year. Along with the rumors of Aapple’s pro apps finally coming to iPadOS and the changes that those will require (especially Logic Pro) to the underlying foundations of iPadOS, I think it’s safe to assume that we’re in for a treat. Looking forward to the keynote with a little over a month to go.

For real work 16GB will not be enough MBP 64GB will do
Plenty of people get real work done with 8, 16 and 32GB of DRAM. Editing 1080p and 4K multicam with 16GB of DRAM is certainly something that plenty of videographers do all day long, even before the M1. If you run lots of VMs, then 16GB is a limitation, but more DRAM does not suddenly solve every productivity problem.

I will not be sending it back. I currently have a 10.5” iPad Pro from launch day, so it’s about 4 years old. The battery isn’t what it used to be, it has developed quite a noticeable “white spot,” and some how about four months ago it got a horrendous scratch on the corner (no idea how), but I can see it when in use.

I’ve been ready to upgrade for a while, but the 2020 bump was disappointment. Even if iPadOS remains as it is, I just want a really good tablet computer, I don’t need a Mac replacement.

The only return I could do is a swap from 12.9” to 11”, I’ve never had an iPad as large as what I ordered, but I hate returning so I’ll likely just live with it.

If Apple offers Final Cut on the iPad, 16GB of RAM would come in handy. That is a big "if."
Handy, but not essential. Just as with Macs, you can do really anything on 8GB that you can do on 64GB. It may not be practical, but doable. Now granted, iPadOS can’t use disk caching, but the most extreme edge case for the iPad is 4K or 8K editing in Final Cut Pro where 16GB of RAM would be useful but not mandatory. l

In my opinion a Mac isn’t enough for real work so where does that leave your argument? I need Windows and it needs to be a desktop more or less.
Opinions are like ***holes, everybody has one, doesn’t make your’s right. PLENTY of “REAL” work gets done on the Mac and on portable devices. Your view of computing is very narrow and being disproven on a daily basis, but you do you.

Yeah and if you actually bothered reading before typing you would have seen that was the entire point. You cannot say real work requires X because everyones situation is different.

Even then I doubt it. App developers are not going to develop apps just to run on 16GB iPad Pro only. The features may work faster or more efficiently on 16GB of RAM, but judging by performance differences between 8GB and 16GB M1 Macs…very subtle differences for all but the very most demanding of tasks.

Strongly disagree:
  • RAM
  • Higher storage options
  • 5G
  • Camera updates
  • M1
  • Thunderbolt
  • Liquid Retina

From a hardware standpoint, the 2021 IPP is a *huge* upgrade.
I would agree. For many, however, with A12X/A12Z 12.9 iPad Pro users who aren’t doing heavy work, all but the display is likely not going to be that noticeable of a change. It’s why I personally opted to not upgrade my 2018 this cycle. Design language even looks identical.

I think this is right, Apple isn't going to create exclusive 2021 iPad Pro applications, that would be a nightmare for consumers.

Just as has been the way for years, all applications will be programmed to function on the lowest common denominator with simply increased performance on those machines with higher specifications.

That's sort of the largest hole in this new fangled internet theory that this iPad is supposed to change everything and provide a MacOS/iPadOS hybrid. If Apple provides that level of functionality, it's going to also work just fine on an A12X/Z too.

Yes. My thinking is with the new purchase is that I will now have one placed on order speculating something wonderful to come out of WWDC and if not I will cancel the order. With the 12.9 inch 16 GB of memory 1 TB SSD, plus Cellular, Applecare+ and finally taxes, it would only cost me $1299.00 with veterans discount and a trade-in, not $2000+.
Not bad, and thanks for your service. I plan on selling mine, I didn't really care to trade in... I have a feeling I could get a few more dollars on OfferUp.

Yeah, I noticed you decided to go with the iMac. I've been living in this iPad bubble, but I wonder what's the statistics of those who bought the iMac over the iPad. At least iMac users are getting a new design language. Any clue on when yours ship?

I went for the 16GB RAM and 512GB 8/8 core and that configuration (I think due to RAM upgrade) pushed it out to mid June (June 16th-23rd)! ? I went back and forth on the RAM but feel that 16GB should future proof for at least 5 years.

Not always. Support for content blocker apps was introduced in iOS 9, iirc. However, you can't install them on devices with 32-bit CPUs (at least not without jailbreak).

My order doesn’t ship until 6/9. So if WWDC is lame I will just cancel and downgrade to 512GB.

I have 70TB of storage on my home network so I can live with 512GB of storage. If I can shift more of my workload to the iPad then 16GB would be very useful.

Never know, you might get it early. And that configuration would definitely get you 5 years of use, smart move on upgrading the RAM… that’s something you can’t really change. I would have done the same and I bet the topic of upgrading to 16GB RAM isn’t as polarizing in the Mac community.

“Real work” is an incredibly broad category; my “real work” Windows laptop issued to me by my workplace has 8GB of RAM and it does what I need to do: MS Office, Outlook, Teams meetings, timesheets, etc.

I could easily do my “real work” using my current iPP.

So 64GB of RAM may be considered a necessity for some “real work”, but I am willing to be that it’s a niche requirement and not reflective of what the average user would ever need.
That the reason I have the MBP 16" and IPP that don't need the high RAM

Yeah, just for fun, I used the AR mode to see how much bigger the iMac is vs sitting next to my 2018 iPad Pro… I didn’t line up the iMac in the pic but that’s a lot of extra screen real estate I’m looking forward to having!

I don’t know why folks don’t stop bullying Apple into making the iPad into something it was not intended to be in the first place. If you need a full desktop experience, there is the Mac for that. What makes the iPad a pleasure to use is really its simplicity. I get it, sometimes I want to work with a couple apps and I can do that with split view. But, I don’t need the full complexity of the windowed environment of the Finder. When I am done using my Mac or Windows PC, I like just laying in bed and watching YouTube and focus on that experience or browse my music library and photos. These things I can do too on a Mac, but the interaction model where the unnecessary becomes hidden is what I like. Yes, the OS can become more powerful, for apps people want to use, but I don’t think it should be at the expense of simplicity.

I won’t send mine back even if nothing is announced, my two main reasons for buying the 12.9” were the M1 chip for future-proofing (longer software support), and the bigger screen with XDR Display and Promotion (for consuming content and drawing). iPadOS even in it’s current form is enough for me to use as my only computer.

I mean, they keep making commercials implying it can replace a laptop, they made a keyboard with a trackpad for it, they routinely compare it’s performance to PC laptops, and then they gave it the same chips they use in Macs and advertised how much RAM you get.

No one has a gun pointed at the largest company in the world’s head. They’re doing this, and they have to know that if they give it more power, people will ask for more capabilities.
