I mean, they keep making commercials implying it can replace a laptop, they made a keyboard with a trackpad for it, they routinely compare it’s performance to PC laptops, and then they gave it the same chips they use in Macs and advertised how much RAM you get.

No one has a gun pointed at the largest company in the world’s head. They’re doing this, and they have to know that if they give it more power, people will ask for more capabilities.
People here seem to think the only thing that this power could be useful on is by the iPad running macos. No one outside of a limited few on sites like this want that. Apple certainly doesn’t.
iPadOS will become more powerful, and more apps built to take advantage of it will spring up, and the current apps able to take advantage will become even more powerful than they are already.
It’s only a good thing for the iPad that this is happening.

Like others, I already did. Actually, I never ordered it. I had set aside the money for a new iPad and love the specs of this one, but had trouble justifying it when my 2018 model does everything I need it to. Instead, I chose to spend that money on a new iMac with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage--because in the end I'll get more out of the 24 inch display than I will out of the incremental improvement over my 2018 iPad Pro. Now, if they come out with gang-busters new apps that actually use the power of the 2021 IPP, I might end up getting one later in the year. But for now, I'm happy with the one I have.

Good call! I’m sure you’ll love your new mac. Though I wouldn’t call the increase between the 2018 and the 2021 an ‘incremental’ upgrade! 2018-2020 for sure. But on paper at least, this new one is better in every respect than any other iPad ever made - by leaps and bounds.

Just out of curiosity, how many here, after purchasing and waiting for the new 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 inch with 16 GB of memory will send it back or cancel the order after hearing nothing earth shattering from WWDC that will take it advantage of the 16 GB? I will ? you betcha
I’m not sure why people are expecting something earth shattering from Apple regarding theses hardware advances. This is now about what developers not Apple, do with the hardware

We'll see, there's a few permutations of what could happen for my tech setup. I have both an 11" and 12.9" on order...
If they announce MBPs at WWDC and they're incredible I'll get one of those and then either keep the new 11" or my current 12.9"
If they announce MBPs at WWDC and they're underwhelming (no ProMotion), but the iPadOS upgrades are substantial, I will likely keep the new 12.9"
If they don't announce any MBPs at WWDC I'll probably go for the new 11" and sell my 12.9" once the MBPs come out

And by putting the same chip in both their Macs and iPad Pros, they are potentially creating more opportunities for iPadOS and macOS developers to expand their base.

I was upgrading from a iPad Mini 5 as the screen has become too cramped for me. At only $200 more than an iPad Air to get the M1, I thought it was good value for the money. That said, I will be disappointed if we do not get LP and FCP at WWDC.

Logistically, do you think regular users of FCP will be able to use it for large scale projects? While the SoC will handle it, I’m thinking about the logistics of drives of media… with that in mind, is it worth supporting FCP for the small scale users who can get by with stupid simple iMovie? Would the media management logistics FCP on iPad even work for vlogcasters? Are they a large enough use case to support?

Regular users of FCP and Logic Pro is a diverse group since the price is relatively cheap for the quality of the product. Anyone doing intensive work would still want a computer with a fan. Those using it for school and simpler projects, will have the choice of a fanless MBA or iPad Pro depending on their preference.

As for logistics, I'd expect WWDC to show Apple updating iPadOS to be more robust in the file handing arena. They already gave everyone high transfer speeds. Maybe USB-C docks are going to be standard 'must have' items for many people going forward with the iPad Pro line. And I think the hard part (having hardware capable of supporting the apps now on the iPad) has been done with regard to support. One product (FCP for example) that can run on two different form factors, with certain input options available on one but not the other.

I'm buying it because apps I already use will benefit from more ram
I had my first substantial, noticeable slowdown on my 2018 recently. Actually had me mulling the potential of an M1.

Someone else posted an excellent summary of this in another thread, to wit: much of Apple’s user base has been conditioned for the iPadOS/iOS interface. No way they risks a user sticking their iPad on a Magic Keyboard and all of a sudden in it’s “where’s my apps / what’s this arrow?”

And I know, they could offer dual boot or whatever, but I just don’t see it.

I do see ore powerful iPad apps. Better multitasking. Real background work.

I'd love to program on the IPP, maybe build some apps and take advantage of the touch screen in some ways. But it would need better file management before I even try. For me the IPP is more of a kick around and take with me device. I would love it to replace my aging MBP w/ Parallels (sometimes I need windows). But its not likely going to happen any time soon.

Even iMacs offer the option to upgrade to 16GB for customers who think their workload can benefit from more RAM.

Well, I know that on the M1 MacBook Air’s with only 8GB of ram, you can easily consume like 20GB+ of system ram and still have a perfectly smooth experience. My 16GB M1 Air can utilize stupendously crazy amounts of system ram, more so than even my 32GB of ram PC. I can only assume Ipad OS will utilize the M1 the same way.

If that’s the case, 8GB ram M1 iPad Pro Users need not to worry at all.

Unlike MacOS, iPadOS doesn't support swap at the moment. With 128GB base, storage is large enough that I'm hoping swap is one of the changes they make on iPadOS 15 at least for M1 iPad Pros. Maybe A12Z as well.

Curious, what was the issue?
Multitasking. Google meet running in one half of splitview; swapping between safari, NotePlan, and slack in the other; todoist in whatever we call the floating pane from the side of the screen (slide over?).

Animations lagged, and the whole thing closed out to the main screen a couple of times — though the Google meet connection never stalled. A few times I played around with the Meet video settings; more faces on the screen definitely increased the strain, but even with just one speaker it was a noticeable difference from normal.

I was listening to Upgrade podcast, Jason Snell decided he was gonna wait until WWDC to decide whether to upgrade or not. And then there’s this thread and I’m positive that Apple has taken this into consideration. Wouldn’t you all agree? They release this 12.9” with marketing term ”XDR” display… along with adding the M1 chip. So, Apple enthusiast knows that WWDC is make or break… it’s not that severe, of course. But if there’s no significant jump in features exclusive to the newest iPad Pros… it would be disappointment to those who preordered.

I understand people like @rui no onna and others were gonna update regardless…. WWDC doesn’t impact them one way or the other. And I totally understand that. But the return windows from most retailers are 14 days… so, most likely those who are getting their iPad Pro on launch date cannot return it when WWDC comes along.

Depends on whether release is May 21 or 24. If it's 24, that's just in time for WWDC on June 7.

If bought online, you can set up the RMA right on the return deadline and you usually have a little bit of allowance to ship it back so even a May 21 release might be fine.

Those who ordered from Apple, some of the estimated ship dates are already past WWDC anyway.

I am sure Apple is very much aware of the spotlight that is shining onto WWDC. The initial launch wave will be outside of the 14 day return window by WWDC, but that's a smaller subset of sales over the year. If WWDC is a let down then they may see lower demand for the 2021 revision, but how much lower remains to be seen if this occurs. A lot of recent iPad demand has been driven by WFH so Apple now has to offer features that align with the demand bump to keep those users in and to make some consider upgrading.

I still think they released the IPP now to allow developers to buy them up and make use of the features coming in iPadOS 15 before normal customers get it in September. Doing it during WWDC would have taken oxygen out of the room for announcing the software features and would have pushed demand up even more for the 2021 IPP compared to the current path where the initial upgrades will have passed and regular users will be encouraged to wait until it is out in September.

We shall see. But I agree that waiting until WWDC is prudent. I'm lucky in that my IPP isn't in the first wave so I'm scheduled to get it a few days after WWDC.

I think they give you 2 weeks to initiate and 2 weeks to return after the initiation? A little trick for online orders.
