My online order through Apple won’t be here until June 4-10, so most likely won’t ship before the end of the month.

With my local Apple Store being within walking distance, I’m at least going to try the website first thing Friday morning to see whether there is any possibility of pickup in store. There’s no option to go into the store and just get one, since it’s “appointment only.”

If I’m successful, I should have plenty of time to cancel the online order.

I work for Bestbuy and I can tell you we will only get 1 or 2 if that store is lucky. BestBuy has been keeping "Major" launches to online only to avoid long lines and distributing low amounts of products.
There is a BB dedicated thread where perhaps you could clarify what BB means that online orders for 12.9 SG 1TB, etc. will be "released" on May 21. Does that mean delivery or something else.

I am considering to go to the store too, even though it says delivery between 21.05.-27.05. for my order. It’s still processing and for all I know it could change to shipping after the 21.05. It has been like this for my Apple Watch, so that 21st is not guaranteed at all….

Is the 21st for Apple stores guaranteed?

I’m only using the in person store as a last resort, should mine show no movement by Friday, while it is still able to be cancelled. I just don’t want the hassle of having to send back an already shipped order. I suspect that mine won’t even progress to the “preparing for shipment” stage until early next week, and that may be pushing it, so I should be fine trying this and still have plenty of time to cancel the online order if successful.

One thing to be aware of is that the in person stock will be limited, and not all models may be available. I can’t even say for sure whether my local Apple Store will even have in store pickups, and only time will answer that question.

I still think it’s worth a try, though, if I can snag a 512 GB or 1 TB one.

I’m going to give it a try. I’m not 100% sure that I want the 12.9, so I’d like to see it in person first.

In the past, I’ve always been able to place an order during the early morning hours the day of launch: in 2018 with my first iPP, with Apple Watch 4, etc. But I think this one is going to be harder to snag since there’s less product/high demand and COVID protocols.

Here’s hoping that at least some of us are successful!

I did call Apple customer service earlier today and they did confirm units would be in stores Friday for sale. They just don’t know what the quantities will look like.

I expect 128GB WiFi would be easiest to get (relatively speaking). 1-2TB particularly cellular, probably better off sticking to the preorders even if they're backordered to July.

Yeah, I want the 1TB w/ cellular version. Hoping they’ll have a couple in store, but not holding my breath. If I strike out, I may end up just ordering through Apple and waiting until July. CDW has a 512 w/ cellular available, but I don’t want to settle as this will be my daily driver and a device I will keep for years.

Why not preorder now to hold your place in queue? The delivery dates will probably slip the longer you wait to preorder. Easy enough to cancel if you can find one at a brick and mortar store.

Yep, good call; just pre-ordered. Just wanted it on Day 1, but I need to learn to have a bit of patience. Estimated delivery 4-6 weeks. Hope I don’t need it though.

I luckily have a day 1 delivery but a surprise trip to Portland just popped up for me on Monday. Might try to pick one up there to save on sales tax!

Appointments on the 21st are now available to be scheduled for my store on Apple’s website (assuming the same for other locations). Was able to get mine booked for the 9am opening.

There‘s still no option for online pickup at my local Apple Store on Friday yet, and I‘m surprised that you can already book one ahead of time for pickup on the 21st already. I live in Canada, btw (Halifax), and maybe things are different in the USA, or other areas in Canada.

You can't order for in-store pickup yet. At least in the US, the Apple site always updates early in the morning on the day of release with the first-day stock.

I just can never remember what time that is. I want to say like 7AM ET? But it might be as early as 3AM.

With the the backorder situation on the 12.9, if you really want one, it's gonna be a game of obsessively checking the page and refreshing. And then checking out as quickly as possible once you see that "Available Today at ______" green text.

That‘s what I thought all along. I’m thinking that the person I quoted actually didn’t place an in store pickup order yet, but rather, made an appointment to be at the store as soon as it opened, hoping to snag one then. I’m going to give ordering for pickup on Friday a try, though, even if the odds of securing one are low, and won‘t get too stressed out if I’m unsuccessful.

At least I still have the online order, even if I have to wait until early to mid June for it to arrive.

Are you saying it may not be worth going to the store in person with an appointment at opening since you’ll be able to just purchase it online and perhaps beat out the line/appointment folks?

Yeah, exactly. In my experience (and others can correct me if I'm wrong), I'm pretty sure they make the in-store pickup stock available well before the stores even open. So if you wait for an appointment — even an early one — you'll probably miss out.

That’s my experience as well. I’d suggest purchasing it early on Friday morning to pick up at the store; it should allow you to choose a pick-up time after that. (In the past, I think the in-store options came open at around 6 or 7, but (a) I’m not completely sure and (b) it could have changed since then.

Got it. Thanks for the insight. You saved me from a potential world of disappointment on Friday.

As this is one of my first misses for Apple launches, where does one find what you describe with green text?
