I don't understand users like this. Your device is meant to updated. Not randomly sitting on some OS you the user have deemed the best. That isn't for you to decide.

Thankfully Apple has done a masterful job of implementing automatic updates, and update reminder nuisance, for users that simply ignore important things. 99% users will get the prompt, enter their passcode like a dutiful user, put their device on the charger, and wake up the next morning with as new OS. As it should be.

For me it is a slightly different option. With the new iPhone 7, I will in all likelihood start migrating away from an iPhone. With the changes in iOS10 combined to that, I can see my iOS world moving toward the shelf.
Tried iOS10 on an iPad Mini 4. Speed was okay and better wishing some apps. Many actual changes are a WTF for me and my use.

Stay on 9? Not likely for a number of reasons. It will be another coffin nail for iOS though - my case.

I suppose the problem is that many people are still in denial about this. iOS updates have always been lineair and Apple has been increasingly persistent about updates. By design, iPhones will attempt to update themselves. When you buy an iPhone, then this is something you have to accept. Unless you want your phone to download the update all the time, wasting your space, and want to receive frequent notifications about the update.

Apple is forcing me to toss my unsupported iPad 3 in the trash on iOS 10 release day :-(
As it should be......the iPad 3 was a horribly engineered device. That unit had no business being made....hence the iPad 4 being released six months later. One of the few times Apple admitted (silently) that they screwed up.

Also, that was almost 5 years ago.....time to update anyway.

As long as the Music app Now Playing screen is as ugly as it is i will remain on iOS 9.

At least, the public beta testing let check that iPhone 6 is as snappy as on older iOS.

They're EOL'ing it and it was discontinued less than four years ago. A three year old iPad now doesn't support the next version of iOS when ios 10 was announced in June. It's a scndal.

Not getting the latest iOS wouldn't be such an issue if Apple would bother porting and releasing security updates also to at least the previous version of iOS. Possibility to change default apps would help too, as you could switch to Chrome and get security updates via the App Store when Safari stops getting patches together with the OS.

Chrome is clunky with one tab on the ipad 3. I tend to stick with Safari due to this.

It's sad, but the iPad 3 was a "road apple" (to borrow LowEndMac.com's terminology) of sorts.

It felt like they just wanted to release a retina iPad at all costs, even though the CPU power required to drive retina wasn't there yet. The iPad 3 shouldn't have been released; they should have gone directly to what became the 4.

In one month it'll have been discontinued for 4 years. Get over it. Apple supports older product for a long time compared to other companies.....do you think Google or Samsung care about people who have a Galaxy S2 phone or even one of the horrible galaxy tab tablets from years ago? It's not a scandal. Its time to upgrade. There are plenty of options out there for iPads that are well under $500. Or you could just keep using the dinosaur iPad 3 on an older OS.

Surely I should expect a piece of hardware to be supported for more than 3-4 years? This is the second decade of the new millennium after all. This iPad is like new.

I'm guessing you're of a "different generation" and aren't used to the way technology cycles work.

Have you ever seen or used a new iPad Pro?....Its night and day. there is NO comparison of an iPad 3 to the iPads of today. This is the world of technology we live in so you shouldn't expect a 4+ year old piece of hardware to be fully supported anymore. I'd say switch to another platform if you're unhappy but other companies don't support products as long as Apple does.

I'm staying on iOS9 as long as I can on my iPhone 6, I'm so used to swiping to unlock that it's ingrained and I find iOS 10 clunky, ugly and it almost feels as bad as android.

Not me. iOS 10 beta is already on 2 of my devices - I have two. I am long past the days of waiting on upgrades for some imagined stability or compatibility. Give me the new, and I'm in. If an app can't get there, I'm out. For functionality, I look to the future, even if imperfect. For security, I want to run as far ahead as i can -- wouldn't it be cool if we were ever actually ahead?

I'm not sure I agree. Just because specs increase doesn't mean an OS upgrade should create sluggishness in legacy products. That's a non-starter. I'm not sure why you'd suggest switching if I find the upgrade cycle intolerable. That doesn't make any sense.

You're missing the point of everything I've been speaking of. I'm stating facts of the technology life cycle. As more features get added, greater demands are placed on the hardware. The same reason a 15 year old PC can't run Windows 10 or an old Mac can't run OS 10.

If you don't understand it, I can't put it any more plainly and I'll bow out of this conversation.

The only reason why this happens is because Apple is unwilling to support more than one version of iOS at a time, hence the bottleneck with older devices, a problem of its very own making. This is completely different in the desktop space, even though there is no distinctive technical reason for it. Manufacturers intentionally abandon these devices. Don’t confuse pure commercial decisions with technical necessity. Apple’s support for mobile devices is commendable, but it pales in comparison to laptops and desktop computers. This is why I will never buy an iPad, knowing this.

After one month using iOS 10, I've gone back to iOS 9 just to check if I miss any of the "advantages" of iOS 10 (for iPad). So far there is only two reasons I'd like to keep iOS 10:

A) the capability of typing with two languages simultaneously (something amazing and almost required if you are using an external keyboard)

B) the old "Define" option, which allows me to read the meaning of a word with just one tap. On iOS 10 you have to tap on the definition box to open the dictionary if the word sense you are looking up does not appear in the first four lines of the dictionary entry.

On my iPad, the new Control Center is ridiculously big and Rich notifications are just a new way to show the same as before, just with new colors. Old notifications were perhaps more boring, but much simpler. The new Lock Screen is kind of useless to me.

So, what I want to say is that unlike the shift from iOS 8 to iOS 9, which was incredible, I don't see huge improvements for iPad that make the upgrading a must. I'll probably end up installing iOS 10 when the final version is out for A) and B), but not because of any of those "astonishing" traits iOS 10 is supposed to offer. Anyway, I guess iPhone devices with 3D Touch will take advantage from the new Rich notifications, but not even the SE has it!

Am I alone with this ideas?

1. Split view in Safari
2. Faster animation and not slowing down my iPad
3. iMessage compatibility

What comes immediately in my mind.

Definitely not staying at iOS 9. iOS 10 is much faster and much more fluid. Played around with a 6s in an Apple Store yesterday, my iPhone 6 running iOS 10 feels so much smoother. I used to think iOS 9.3 was smooth and fast at the time, but after using iOS 10 for a while, it shows there is a lot of room for improvement.

iOS 10 is simply better than iOS 9.
- Looks more modern (going back to iOS 9 feels like going back in time in a bad way)
- Smoother animations
- Faster

I don't see any reason to prefer iOS 9 over iOS 10.
