I don't understand users like this. Your device is meant to updated. Not randomly sitting on some OS you the user have deemed the best. That isn't for you to decide.

Thankfully Apple has done a masterful job of implementing automatic updates, and update reminder nuisance, for users that simply ignore important things. 99% users will get the prompt, enter their passcode like a dutiful user, put their device on the charger, and wake up the next morning with as new OS. As it should be.

I can't decide what to do with a device that I purchased? Are you kidding?

Not updating to 10 because: 1) don't like the redesign of notifications, control center, music app and what not, 2) avoid the slowing down of my phone which doesn't have an option of downgrading to an earlier firmware, and 3) have no use for 90% of the new features, including all the gimmicky features of the new iMessage.

I can live with the potential 'security vulnerabilities'. After all, haven't had any issue of such sorts since I first started using the iPhone.

No, thanks Apple, I'll stay with iOS 9.

You didn't purchase the OS. You don't own it, or what version of it, runs on your device at any given time.

There is no excuse or reason for staying on iOS 9. That's foolish, ignorant, and downright stupid.

There's too much good stuff in iOS 10. The positive outweigh the negatives in my opinion. I've enjoyed running iOS 10 beta from the beginning.

You're kidding right? Apple doesn't force anyone to update. He can stay on iOS 9 for as long as he wishes to do so. Calling his choice stupid is very ignorant.

You're missing the point of everything I've been speaking of. I'm stating facts of the technology life cycle. As more features get added, greater demands are placed on the hardware. The same reason a 15 year old PC can't run Windows 10 or an old Mac can't run OS 10.

If you don't understand it, I can't put it any more plainly and I'll bow out of this conversation.

Where your argument is flawed then is reference to a 'tech life cycle'. That is arbitrary and Apple induced. There's no reason at all that the iPad 3 is not perform any enough for iOS 10. Fo starters, Apple could ditch the silly faces which waste everybody's time. The 'greater demands' are artificial.

Apple should post a purchasing notice that their hardware is only supported for 1000 days then you're on your own. That would highlight the Apple forced obsolescence policy clearly.

Actually yes there is, the iPad 3 has a horrible GPU in comparison to any other iPad made. They screwed up and released the much faster iPad 4 6 months later. iOS 7-10 have more graphical animation, blurs, etc. Also the architecture Apple is building software in is best for 64-bit devices which anything over 3 years old is not. They are dropping support for ALL A5 devices which include the iPhone 4S and iPad 2/3/mini 1. They feel that chipset isn't good enough to sun iOS 10, its that simple. And its a good way to get people such as your self to get out of the dark ages of old technology (yes 4-5 year old technology devices are pretty much in the final stage of life in human years) Look up Moore's law.

Things have to move forward and eventually support has to be dropped. Its a fact of life with any product. Why doesn't Microsoft support windows XP anymore? Would you be using the same argument if you had an iPad 2 that was released a year before the iPad 3? How about the iPad 1? Where does it end? Hell why aren't we still using horse and buggys? And who needs these huge flat screens anyway? I was happy with my old tube TV.

Apple is making a push to get as many people as possible onto new iPads as thats their vision for personal computing for many. I personally know 3 people other than myself that use iPad as their PRIMARY computing device at home. And considering iPads are much cheaper than Macs.....I don't think its asking that much that people upgrade their iPads every 2-3 years vs 5-10 years for a $1500-2000 mac.

Have used iOS 10 from the first public beta and will keep using it.
There will always be people that don't like the changes and struggles to be backwards.
But eventually they will by a new iPhone and then they don't have no choice.
So why not use it from the beginning and get used to the different.
I know people who still claim that iOS before iOS 7 was the most beautiful but they are plain stupid :)

That sounds logical as long as the new OS doesn't slow down the "current" device.

Definitely not staying at iOS 9. iOS 10 is much faster and much more fluid. Played around with a 6s in an Apple Store yesterday, my iPhone 6 running iOS 10 feels so much smoother. I used to think iOS 9.3 was smooth and fast at the time, but after using iOS 10 for a while, it shows there is a lot of room for improvement.

iOS 10 is simply better than iOS 9.
- Looks more modern (going back to iOS 9 feels like going back in time in a bad way)
- Smoother animations
- Faster

I don't see any reason to prefer iOS 9 over iOS 10.

What do you feel more modern?

I'm now on iOS 9 and, except for the Music app, everything seems simpler, more beautiful (to me).

Are you serious? This is a product that we own, and that is most definitely up to us to decide.

My iPhone 6 runs just as good, if not better on iOS 10 (beta) than it ran on iOS 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3. No slow down at all.

Being grumpy, stubborn, nitpicky, refusing to update because of a few pixels are different and not they way you like them to be displayed is also very ignorant (I've heard a lot of really odd and completely strange reasons why people say they refuse to update, and it's hilarious hearing them.) Updates happen for a reason. To move forward. Some people (especially some around these forums) seem to believe that the software should be exactly how they want it, right down to every single little detail. Where as those who live in reality and not in their own little bubble, go on and just use the devices as they were built and designed to be used.

Yeah, no, that's not ignorance. The customer purchased a product and they can do with it as they please, as per their rights as specified in the user agreement. It's not ignorant to prefer one way of doing things over another. I could definitely see why some people would prefer the lockscreen style, the notification style, and the overall behavior of iOS 9 over iOS 10. Their decision doesn't make them ignorant.

Not to mention Apple has a history with slowing down devices with updates that has only been interrupted by iOS 10 actually being faster. Yeah yeah new features, I get it, but if people prefer speed over new features that they may or may not need, then they have a right to choose.

This time around I'm planning to stay on iOS 9 at least until there's been a few point updates and I've seen how it performs over time on friends devices. I like my iPad Pro as it is and I'm not risking losing it to performance degradation like my last iPad.

If there were features in iOS 10 that interested me I'd probably be more inclined to update sooner.

I've installed a tvOS profile on my iPad so I won't even get nagged about upgrading because this time I mean it.

I'm really confused because my experience has been different. iOS 10 was relatively fine, but the last beta made it sluggish compared to iOS 9.3.5 on my iPad Air 2. The App Switcher became a chaos.

Listen, I'm all for updating. However, the OP has the RIGHT to not update. Regardless of how silly his reasons may be, it's his right. So while we can debate the validity of those reasons all day long, there's no need to call him stupid.

I'll stay on ios 9 until the next major security fix. As ios 10 "forces you" to use touch id which I don't want to use. That's already a no-go for me.

Moreover I have yet to find a useful improvement my use. But I use my phone as a phone that allows me to have push mail, do some quick surf if I need it and look for direction from time to time. For everything else I use my ipad. So that's probably really different than most of the Macrumors users.

Anyway, I said I'd probably update... I just wanted to know who wasn't going to upgrade and why.

You guys realize updates are no longer optional right? I mean realistically, speaking.

Starting somewhere with 9.2 or 9.3 Apple introduced a screen that takes up the entire iPhone screen which nags you periodically to enter your pin so your phone will update the next day.

Even if you go to manage storage, find the update installer and delete it, Apple will force re-download as soon as viable and re-nag you.

"oh but I still have a choice" Do you? Constantly getting nagged, annoying screen that disrupts your usage periodically?

I tell you that my iPad Mini 1 still running iOS 7. Why because iOS 8 and 9 runs like crap on that hardware.

It is my hardware, it is my ****ing decision. I don't need big parent Apple tell me which iOS I need to run.

If you cannot understand this reasoning, then I have nothing to say

I don't care. My iPhone SE still with iOS 9.1.3. When the pop up appear, I will just tap detail then quickly press home bottom. I am telling you, I won't upgrade to iOS 10 unless then change the stupid double click to unlock.
[doublepost=1472937592][/doublepost]
Can you explain this?

There is trick where you can install tvOS beta profilie, so that your iPhone will check tvOS update instead of iOS update. If there is no tvOS update, there will be no reminder about update.

This method does not work indefinitely. It has an expiration date. Until then, we don't have to deal with annoying iOS update.

I'm most likely sticking with 9.3.5. More than happy with it.

Some of the replies on this thread are a joke! It's up to the user to decide what version OS they want and other people should respect that. We are all different.

It's too bad that deleting the installer doesn't stop it from downloading it again as it did before. At least there's the workaround of installing a tvOS or watchOS profile for updates to stop it.
