I want to see more details about the hardware. If they can outperform x64 by the next year, yes, I’m definitely getting one. Asymmetric ARM with SVE? Bring it on! Time to ditch the morally obsolete x86 monstrosity anyway.

Compatibility with Bootcamp is a minor concern, but then again, I only use Bootcamp for gaming, so I can probably just buy a crappy used Windows gaming laptop...

I'd be interested. Especially if the thing has much better thermals than Apple's current lineup, Mac Pro excluded of course. Power isn't a big factor as I'm using old hardware right now.

Day 1 mbp buy. Hopefully the 16” comes
Doubtful, since they just introduced that model, I think it may be the MBA or a re-relased MacBook

As for my thoughts on the ARM based Macs - First, as many already know here, I've left the platform. I've been using PCs now for the past couple of years. With that said, I definitely am intrigued by the move, more so when it was just a rumor.

On one hand, I can see myself buying a less expensive Mac to see how this ARM stuff goes, not to replace my Razer, but just to experiment.

I doubt very much we'll see a reduction in price, but that's something Apple ought to do, since they're not paying Intel and while they are incurring overhead costs, they should pass on some of the savings to the consumer (I doubt they'll do that)

I will definitely be a buyer if they get rid of the touch bar as well.

Maybe the first ARM MBP will be the 14" we heard so much about earlier this year? A completely new MBP inside and out would be a nice showcase product for the new chips.
Personally, I think the first 14" will be an Intel one in Q1 of 2021. Then Q4 of 2021 will be an ARM 14".

I'm hoping they will reduce the cost by using ARM and by getting rid of the touch bar. A $200-$400 price drop across the board would be nice.

ARM might allow Apple to make a real entry-level Mac. They've done it with the iPhone.

I'd take a Mac SE.

I was waiting to see what wwdc offered and now i am convinced. Day 1 mbp buy. Hopefully the 16” comes first but I will get the 13“/14” if that released.

My guess is the first MacBook with the ARM processor will be the new version of the MacBook. A lowered powered unit that will have a 12+" display. Hopefully it will run 20 hours on a charge.

A fan-less laptop that gets like 24 hour battery life and doesn't get that hot and runs laps around anything x86 even the top end would be a marvel, all under $999 lol

Over here
Would a chip change really make a significant difference to the battery life, the display is not changing that we know of and will still have a big impact on battery.

You still have the laws of physics.

I'd prefer lots of fans myself. I like to keep my chips as cool as possible.

how do you mean? iPad Pro's pushing heavy sustained computation need no fans nor defiance of physics.

Especially if the ARM laptops had the logic board / 'Apple silicone' guts strapped behind the screen, and the entire bottom case beneath the keyboard and trackpad to be a massive pool of battery cells. Wouldn't even be an issue of running hot on one's lap while running these intense workloads, with the guts up top and able to be (since iPad has its guts behind its screen)

I'm only being an armchair hardware engineer here but

seems very possible, notwithstanding price and Apple's will lol

Let me know when you can hook up three 4K monitors on an iPad Pro. Or stick a Terabyte of RAM into the thing. Do you know why you can by SSD, HDD, RAM and Graphics coolers?

Comparing iPadOS performance with a full laptop/desktop with macOS, full versions of software, all the background apps and all other tasks that will be running that iPadOS won't be, not sure it's the right comparison.

They will likely have another generation or two of the Apple Silicon by the time the higher performance MacBook Pros ship. I believe they will match or exceed the performance of current iPad Pros.

I hope the first one is an Air, because it might be cheaper, but also a Pro 13 would be nice.

I'm in the market for a laptop for work, but now I'm gonna wait and buy this one. I don't need pro apps, just document apps and web browsers, so the ARM MacBook will suit me nice. Word is already working on it and will probably be optimised even further, and with iOS apps I can get everything extra I need: games, note apps, etc.

If battery life gets even better and no fans, then it's a winner.

Currently own a 27 5K 2019 iMac, so I can wait patiently for the MacBook ARM at the end of this year.

I already own an 11“ iPad Pro thanks so my Keyboard, My Software, My 120Hz Touchscreen, my Apple Pencil. My battery Life, Are Far superior to any x86 Intel based MacBook. Technically I already have an 11” MacBook Pro.

Not really, its not running a desktop quality operating system, its apps are not desktop quality, i.e., Photoshop and Office are nerfed versions. I can multitask a lot more on a laptop, and hook up a heck of more peripherals on my laptop then my iPad.

Its great that you find your usage on the iPad to be better then a laptop, but that doesn't mean your tablet is a better laptop

I am still on the fence because I just bought a new MacBook Pro 16 and right now looking seriously at the Surface Book 3 with maxed out specs for my school homework and graduate school in a few years.

I def don't need a new mac right now, but I will upgrade my Mac mini to an ARM mac mini if the price and specs are right when the time comes.

(I know, I cheated)

I'm sure Apple will release a fanless ARM Macbook. But I don't want one. I want one with a big fan because I want the highest performance possible in a laptop.

I'll buy one when my 2017's keyboard repair program offer expires in April 2022. (Bought it in April 2018, and around 4 years is how often I keep my computers normally)

ARM MacBook Pro 16" ? Rocking Big Sur, shut up and take my money. ?
Yup, that's the way. They might be able to entice me with a 14" MBP if the rumors were indicating that the big brother wasn't going to be updated for a while afterwards. If that was the case I'd probably hold onto the 14" until the second-gen 16" came out, then sell and upgrade. I'm pretty anxious to make the transition to an Arm Mac, I've got high expectations and hopes for them.

As a side note I really don't appreciate the rumor that the MBP is staying at 13.3" during its ARM transition this fall. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'd think they'd want to do a major overhaul all at once with ARM, mini-LED, 14" near bezel-less, ProMotion, etc.

Sorry if this doesn’t have anything to do with this topic but I just want to understand something simple, ARM is owned by Apple or is it a company like intel that will just supply Apple with processors?

ARM is owned by a consortium of investors led by SoftBank. It created the basic design of a processor architecture (sort of like AMD or Intel), but licenses the technology to others who can make their own designs, which Apple has done. Apple has designed the new chips, and has a company called TSMC in Taiwan produce the actual chips.
